SO I assume its just Hard and not necessarily different mode. I'm just getting started but being spoon fed too much, how can I get it more non linear? Or does it just do this at the start? Consider it a very long string of tutorial levels with various amounts of handholding.

While that's correct, the buzz around the internet seems to be that as long as you don't use these methods to pay less for purchases (i.e for example using a russian tor exit node to buy the game much cheaper), they don't really care. I've done it and haven't experienced any ill effects. So far.

On the note about the difficulties - yes, it is just a difficulty setting. They did do a good job making it actually hard which is great, and I do know that on Classic you start with a couple fewer buildings in your base than you do on Normal (not sure about Impossible, but I assume you start with less than on Classic)

The only thing i dislike so far is the way Class System works it's way too random. I got 7 Snipers but only 1 Heavy 1 Assault and 1 Supporter ...

Playing now on classic with no tutorial... O man it's so much fun! Feeling like old days so far.

Having way too much fun getting my butt kicked on Classic Ironman. I finally had a pretty good game going, till all of the abduction mission choices I had were "Very Difficult" and my entire upped squad went down in a blaze of combined Muton/Thin Man/Floater/Sectoid fire. It's really cool watching the AI flank the hell out of your guys, but really everything about the game is just awesome - can't say enough about it!

Same thing here. Having 1 sniper is great, having a whole squad of them sucks.

Worst part is you drag a Rookie through a mission where if the Aliens shoot once at him he'll be 100% dead only to get ANOTHER guy you can't use .

Is there any way to tell what they are going to become without getting them promoted first? I've only played for a couple hours but so far it seems like the heavy, support, and assault all look the same as rookies?

Watched ROOTSlush's stream last two days.. game seems really fun, Slush also plays on classic+Ironman. XCom program looks like a sharktank, how do they get volunteers?
I would really like some statistics on the memorial (average kills, average missions from deployment to death etc.). When I buy the game on Friday I will make my own little excel sheet, I guess.

No its not , i reloaded after i basically lost my whole first squad trying to level a rookie ( the rookie survied ) and both times he became something different.

So it's random when they get promoted? That's good to know. I might have to reload an easy mission a few times because I'm getting way too many support class and not enough assault.
How does health work? I noticed all my starting personnel started at 5 health but all my new hires started at 6. Does it have a chance of becoming higher with missions or just with promotions?

All Xcom rookies are hand picked best of the best from around the world. Plenty of dedicated soldiers that don't ask questions and do what they are told in this world.

Does anyone else fall behind on their research in Classic difficulty? I always go up against tougher aliens before I have laser weapons, even when I rush tech.

I assume there will be certain research paths that will get you guns in time but it will mean sacrificing things like the live alien stuff.

God damn, I've been playing a fair amount and I only just realized I could sell stuff to get more money.
Obviously a total noob right here! Great game so far though, lost almost all of my original squad, mostly to poor tactical judgements, but I refuse to a load a save because the whole point is to get better over time and learn from mistakes, rather than just correct your mistakes as they happen.
No doubt I'm totally doomed here, can't keep up with research, but I think thats partly due to my not realizing I could sell stuff ¬_¬

There's an upgrade you can buy in the officer thingy which makes new characters start at a higher level, could be that.
My impressions so far: Love the game. Lost a few people, but no reload so far and got an A from the council on my first month and I'm expecting an A this month again.
Im wondering a bit about progression though. Obviously, there are "key objectives" which push the story forward (capture X, create Y) and when you do those, it feels like the game progresses... a bit too much for comfort, you can't research or get funds fast enough. So I'm sorta wondering if there's a downside to not doing those missions on purpose to get ahead with research etc. I mean, I just ran into cryssalids for the first time and I was hard-pressed to be sure, a laser to the face is not enough to take em down and they come up to you so darn fast. One of my squadies was even one-shotted by a zombie
I also got a terror mission, which was cool but... how do they expect you to get good scores on those? In like 2 turns, civilians started dying on the other side of the map, and this mission was "very difficult" so it's not like I could rush past enemies. I saved a decent amount (about half) but still only got "good" rating :8
|
Got the first terror mission and managed to deal with Cryssalids by using an Assault with the fire twice perk. just run into its face and shoot twice. But yes you need to run fast during terror missions. Im personaly a big fan of always taking 2 assaults with me. But half my soldiers are Assault ><
Really wish you could chose a class for them
