Council missions get much easier once you remember where the thin men drops, so its kinda trial and error with those missions. Not all bomb missions are bad imo and some of the escort ones can be tough as nails, especially the one where you must escort the guy thats accused of colaberating with the aliens.

The difficulty of bomb council mission are highly dependant on the map. Basically any map that offers them full cover and allow them to get out of vision right as they spawn can become hell real fast especially with low node core energy thing on the part of the map the thin men are in.
The cemetary bomb map with a building in the center is one that cost me a decent game. You get close to a power node, thin men spawn in the buildings and you must choose between assaulting the building with nades and heavy rocket then shooting them and going to more power node on either of the side of the map. I choose to use 3 guys to handle the thin men and 1 to defuse power node to not lose the fricking mission and god was I mad when a pack of sectoids and another pack of thin men appeared near the guy that needed to defuse. I also failed a defusing mission on the highway map, too few power core on the first part of the map, 2 spawn of thin men getting full cover perfectly and getting a critical on overwatch on an assault that is not high level enough to have lightning reflexes.

That one is really easy (if not the easiest). Just climb and walk through the roof top withouth spotting aliens if you can, overwatching to get rid of those pesky thinman jumpers and voila, VIP will reach easilly and you are a good spot to take down the rest of the aliens (since on council missions, they don't roam).

The cemetary bomb mission is a huge pain...

Finally have a perfect ironman start (sniper / heavy / support all healthy, excavated area to right of lift) after like 30 attempts.
I also found where saves are stored. It actually appears to be possible to manually "save" an ironman game. I copied and renamed the most recently updated save file, and now have effectively duped my savegame (as shown from within X-COM). Anyone know if this "strategy" may have any unintended effects on the game, achievements, etc?

You can also close the game and restart it and you get your turn back provided the aliens weren't done moving.

Agreed, that move has 8 nipples written all over it.

Haha :D
I admit, the attraction / immersion of Ironman has died out quite a bit for me now that I have discovered this. Going to limit myself to one "save" and one in-combat "time dilation" per month, lol.

The only situation I wouldn't call you terrible things for using that is if it was a save right after the first mission, getting proper excavations etc. Restarting repeatedly for that isn't any additional skill (and there's nothing to lose before that because the game just started).
That said, it still kind of taints the achievement.

To be honest, if you are doing that on ironman, i don't even understand why you are playing it on the first place, if you have more fun doing that, just play withouth ironman and have fun withouth having to cheese savedgames or alt+F4 to feel your ego happy about playing ironman..

So the sweet Chryssalids decided to spawn in every corner of the map except where my soldiers were, which makes a terror mission pretty damn hard.

The fuck this game is hard in classic.
Also, overwatch is imba once you have a sniper at a good enough grade, he can shot twice in overwatch and his first shot is guarantee hit.

after you got carapace armor and laser weapons, the game is quite easy except terror missions. but i think "impossible" is really fucking impossibe on ironman if RNG is not with you.

This. Sectoids frequently 1-shots my soldiers on impossible even when they have full cover.

Yeah, I beat the game on Classic Ironman. Tried Impossible out, but it's just not fun to me. On Classic, you can get screwed by the RNG, but if you're good it shouldn't be game ending.
On Impossible, it's just too easy to wipe a squad even when everyone has full cover. I feel like I could win eventually, but how many attempts before the RNG agrees with me? I'd probably enjoy playing the lottery more, similar chances it seems.
I do hope we get some decent DLC at some point though, would buy that in a heartbeat.

It's the same on impossible. To me, classic is like normal would be to you i guess, too easy. The first thing you should learn on impossible is... never engage on firefights and you can't rely on high cover if you are not hunkering down. Sectoids have a 35% chance to hit you on high cover, and when there are 2-3 of them, you will take loses and panic, you have to avoid firefights and think outside the box.
The incoming 2 DLCs are scripted missions with pre-made characters on it. Imho not worth it.

I do hope we get some decent DLC at some point though, would buy that in a heartbeat. I feel the same way about Impossible. Tried it a couple of times, till I found the way to make Classic more challenging, but not as random as Impossible. Second Wave did the job. But even with that, game gets rather easy towards the end.

The first three or four missions on Impossible Ironman are largely luck based. Some maps are pretty much impossible to win on that early in the game. But others are smooth sailing unless the RNG hates you or the game bugs out.
For example, there's this lovely map that features two elevated areas with a depression filled with half-cover cars. That mission in particular is a turkey shoot. On the other extreme, there's that mission in a cemetery...I don't think I've ever seen someone finish that mission that early on in the game without taking unacceptable losses.
Of course, you could simply hire 6 HP recruits. That tones down the difficulty substantially.
