But when your snipers get ranked up and you play careful, it gets pretty easy. (had 2 snipe, 2 support, 2 assault team).

A 95% chance to hit when they're in full cover just means you're going to break the cover. not how cover works in this game. heavy cover just subtracts 40 (20 for low) from your to hit chance. but that is already in the numer you see on the screen

That being said- I don't know how on earth you could make it to the alien base on impossible ironman mode, and even if you get that far, I still don't understand how you could think it would be beatable. I can't even imagine facing swarms of mutons and muton elites with extra hitpoints, and then throw in a up to 3 sectopods in a do or die situation. All it takes is a few bad crits... I'll probably give it a shot at some point, but I don't expect to get very far. :> I also had some glitch where in the final room of the game, 3 of my 5 squad members (my sniper died) got stuck in a hallway, so I had to face the last room with only my super soldier and some random heavy. >_>

Punishing mistakes is what makes a game difficult

However, I get my ass kicked on every single mission except the first two that it teaches you the game. I think my soldiers are in cover, but then an enemy fires at him/her and the cover explodes, and the subsequents shots kill the soldier. Then I'm scrambling to do something, make more mistakes, get frustrated, and start another game. Should I really start on Normal difficulty and make my way up to Classic when I beat the game at least for once? Because right now the game feels more punishing than difficult really. Stay on classic ironman. Yes you will get owned but eventually you will learn the maps, alien spawns etc. I havnt played on normal but I can imagine it being way to easy once you get a decent squad with laser weapons.

I am beginning to think that this game is lying to me...Why am I getting shot from behind cover? It is a goddamn building wall, not a half-cover or a window or anything.. IT IS THE BUILDING WALL! And my soldier gets shot from behind it, what the hell? What is the use of cover then? I might as well just run around and try to shoot anything that moves. If it's possible to get shot through the walls in this game, then just give me a warning... This game is driving me nuts..

On a serious note, yeah getting 1-shotted behind full cover is anoying but what the cover does is reducing the chance for enemies to hit. It doesnt completely remove the risc of getting hit though.

If so, I can take this and try to play it through hiring new soldiers etc.

You gotta level up your soldiers though. Cant just rehire half a squad every time. That said I made it back from losing 5 of 6 pretty high levelled soldiers in one mission on classic ironman once. Was pretty tough.

Started a new game after my first and focused on making uplinks and sattelites since I missed the importance of this the first time around. It is critical if you want all the juicy gear. Got bored a bit in though, the games seems too repetitive without enough depth. The game could have been better in the base management with more buildings options, troop management and so on, especially research should have been expanded a lot since building any laboratories seems a waste of space. Actual missions are fine, but too repetitive. So if you are looking to buy it, its good for a single playthrough, but don't expect it to last for a long time.

Losing soldiers and driving you nuts because of that... is one of the wonders of the game. Most of the stuff is about learning how to deal with them. For example the "energy dude" i don't engage him till i got 3 guys close enough to the UFO, then i make him pop and kill him ASAP with 1 grenade + shots if i can get pointblank or 2 grenades if needed. On impossible they have 85 aim, that's why i don't ever try my chances.

Games are supposed to be fun huh? And, he just killed the fourth squad member and mission failed. All long range shots. Fuck.This.Game. Approach that thing carefully with 2 assaults and he's a joke. Just run and gun to flank him with the first guy and he's gone. If he doesn't kill him, the other assault will. It's easy to get 100% acc shots with run and gun. If you only have 1 assault, a support should be able to get in a quite good position as well. On some UFO wreckages, your sniper can also take him out quite easily. Capturing this thing can be a pain though. Some tips for you guys who are struggling on classic: 1. Move forward slowly Most of my deaths happens when one of my units move to a new position and spawns new units. A good technique to prevent this is to mainly do single moves and then save your 2nd actions on all units, to shoot at anything that spawns. If nothing spawns, you can put them on overwatch or reload. 2. Keep the distance Don't ever keep your units in a position where the aliens could flank you in 1 movement. The key is mostly about staying at a distance, but also about making sure that your cover faces the right direction. 3. Play passively I usually don't fire unless I have atleast a 30% hit chance. Hunker down and overwatch are really useful if your position isn't ideal. If you outnumber them, you can usually be more aggressive, especially with your assaults. 4. Always try to flank On a team of 6, I tend to have 2 soldiers at the frontline, ideally heavies or supports. Then I have 2-3 soldiers that tries to flank from the sides, preferably assaults, because they have the best ability to dodge shots, if you get the defensive upgrades and they have run and gun and rapid fire (really useful when flanking aliens that you can't 1 shot). 5. Use snipers well Squadsight is a must. I tend to save the sniper(s) move until last, and always use them to take out the alien that would be the biggest threat in the next enemy round. Remember that if you're out of normal shooting distance, your sniper won't need cover. 6. Reload After you have killed off a group of units, reload the weapons of most of your units, putting 1 or 2 in overwatch. 7. Suppression Suppression pretty much takes a specific alien out of the game, for one round, so if your support or heavy isn't in a good position to make a shot, or if there's a danger that you might not be able to take out enough aliens to be safe until the next round, save him until last, and use suppression on any remaining big threat.
