I always thought all forms of mutons are the hardest to deal with at the stage that they begin to show up. High defense, always in cover, liberal with grenades and they always seem to crit when they hit (that's probably subjective tho).

But first terror mission can go nuts sometimes, specially on impossible and classic, where the chryssalids can pop zombies even if you haven't spotted them yet. On impossible you can get swarmed by 4-5 or even more chryssalids if you aren't fast at spotting and killing them (this is bigger on impossible, since almost every single pack roam). After you got precission lasers, etc, yeah, they are quite easy. Well first mission would be difficult yeah, I am playing Classic (no Ironman) and I think I lost two squad members in the first mission. Right now I am playing an UFO crash map and it's driving me nuts, about 2 hours of reloding and trying different tactics and I am losing two members every time.

I also had a support, which makes it 5 soldiers in total but tbh I didnt think the first terror mission would be doable on impossible without any laser tech.

So on my continueing run to complete this game on impossible ironman, the first terror mission popped up as early as day 16 in the 2´nd month and I didnt have laser weapons yet and not even a sniper with squadsight. However what I did have was 2 assaults - 1 of them with rapid fire and a heavy with shredder rocket. That combo totally saved my butt. I even stunned 2 floaters. I also had a support, which makes it 5 soldiers in total but tbh I didnt think the first terror mission would be doable on impossible without any laser tech. Yeah it is, if you get some assault / heavy levelled enough as i told you many pages ago ;P It's mostly OST or Laser tech are reliable ways to do it. Congratz man, seems you are into some good run ? ;D

Sectopods on the other hand, are my nightmare, their overwatch is ridiculously OP, they take two shots per turn, their main attack hits like a truck, their hp is huge and they also have an aoe attack. I'll take Chrysalids over Sectopods everyday. IMO, a lot of the fear is just carried over from UFO Defense. In that game, they had absurdly long range (to the point that they could run up to you from outside of sight range and kill you. Fortunately, the AI almost never does this.). Zombies were also ten times worse since they always spawned Chrysalids on death. It wasn't uncommon for a zombie to shuffle towards you and die to reaction fire, causing a Chrysalid to spawn and kill your guy. They also seem to take a lot more shots to kill in UFO Defense.

They can and do kill you beyond your sight range, especially due to the fact they have unlimited vertical movement, so they can jump off roofs and second floors that you have no vision on and immediately gimp you. Happened to me 2 playthroughs ago. I also tried to skip the first terror mission, but even with my best efforts I lost that entire continent and eventually the game because of it. Oh and for the record, Rookies do 2 damage to them with normal guns and they have 7 health, so if you don't have lasers or a fully upgraded squad...uh, don't bother. Also, I decided maybe I should actually beat classic normally before trying Ironman.

For example I zoom all the way out with G, then when Im done moving my trooper, it switches to the next one and it zooms all the way back in, wich is pretty annoying imo. As far i know, nope. It used to be really annoying for me too at the beginning, but it's one of those things you just get used to.

Im only just starting out tho (mutons) so im still pretty bad. Doing it on classic by accident, so far no casualties wich aparently is pretty good. I find healing is one of the best skills in the game, its one of those 'overwatch is not needed and i have 1 action left' goodies. Always run with 2 supports, helps loads. Or I just take too much damage in the first place ^_^

Rookies do their full damage vs chrysalids, in fact I'm unaware of any alien that takes reduced damage from attacks that land.

Normally you need 3 assault rifle users to take down a single chryssalid. On classic (there's where they have 7 HP ? i am too used to them having 8 HP :d), 2 shotgun/heavy rifle/sniper can make the deal tho, but rookies are pretty useless if they don't have laser rifle.

I've got a question.. + Show Spoiler + So now I have to get a skeleton key and have to assault the alien base.. Is there a time limit to it? Like a few months or I'll auto lose, or I can drag it out as long as I want?. Because most of my stuff are still crappy and not up to scratch.. So am thinking of avoiding it till I get better gear...

Do it when you have carapace armor and laser weapons. The rewards for doing it are huge so dont wait!

For example + Show Spoiler + muttons corpse opens in the foundry a project to be able to shoot more times before reloading, that's quite huge. Interrogations give you bonus to be able to research faster certain techonologies (way way faster).

The only "harder" thing will be than instead of outsiders you will be facing sectoid commanders. I say it because i had already done many third month alien base with laser weapons + caparace armor. The game will continue to be the same, just the sectoid commanders, and for me, they aren't a huge deal, and you will be getting tons of resources to be able to build your researched technology ASAP, also decreasing panic at some key moment.
