Yep. Many people try to rush nodes and the bomb, you just have to calculate and cut corners as best you can. You don't need to defuse 2 nodes at a time, except if you already know the spawnpoints and that you can get away with it withouth triggering any alien. But if you trigger aliens, you better kill them right away, because the low cover from nodes is not worth it.
Bombs are quite easy if you got an assault with lightning reflexes and/or a heavy with 2 rockets and you know spawn points. Escort missions favor squad sight sniper also. Anyways, till you had done the first, you should have already laser weapons for the next and caparace armor, and thinman just suck from that point, even with impossible 6HPs.

Believe me, I know. I tried Ironman about 8-9 times before just doing a normal Classic playthrough.

Well i got bored with my first classic game during the last mission so i went ironman classic. After having restarted on the second or third mission about five times, i managed to get going rather well. Apart from a kinky bomb mission where i lost two heavies(like mission 4 or 5) it has progressed smoothly untill i lost my highest level guy, a support none the less to a teleport bugg. The next mission was... a nailbiter since i encountered mutons for the first time in a landed UFO mission.
The picture should tell the full story. Two guys had to be revived or rather stabilized since the support alive wasn´t high enough. And this had to be done while being surprise flanked by a trio of floaters while running through two mutons on overwatch stuck inside the ship with me/injured guys just outside. With everything but the energy guy dead i had two 1 hp snipers and a 4/10 hp support with no smoke and no medkits.
XCOM is just a fantastic game. The fact that i got into this situation was 100% my own fault as i went for a too direct flank on the mutons inside the ship while also leaving the guy running for the flank in half cover. In ironman as everyone know half cover is no cover. I even said it to myself as i clicked there "this is a bad idea" but i convinced myself that they would not try to counterflank. How wrong i was. It all spiraled out of control here as the second guy started to bleed out trying to get to the first guy. Sweating like a pig, biting my nails and praying to the XCOM gods i just barely pulled through.
I have never been this challenged in a single player game before, and i love it. Only annoying part are a few bugs(flanking, teleport, bugged tiles) and the fact that sometimes you are shot dead through full cover which is a bit bullshit.
Anyone else running their first ironman still?

I've looked for a TL XCOM thread before, didn't think one existed!
I'm well past my first ironman, finished ironman impossible last weekend and am playing a normal impossible run for fun. unfortunately I made the mistake of turning on the randomized country funding SW option and rolled a 50 credit starting country, and am looking at going into the alien base on the third month dirt-broke and without enough alloys for any armor or laser snipers unless I luck out in the next few months and get a UFO landing.
also, the beta for a patch that fixes the teleport bug is apparently available...somewhere. the bug is so common on impossible I'm almost accustomed to it stockholm syndrome style, but if anyone's not playing solely because of that issue, a fix is on the way/maybe already here.

I bit the bullet and grabbed this last week. Great game. I love old school stuff like this that doesn't compromise with the ass kicking. I started with normal difficulty, but restarted and went with classic, which is how the game should be played. You will learn real fast how to properly play that way. For people who are thinking about getting this, I have two tips. First, expand your squad size to 6 and get laser rifles quickly. Second, there are very few problems that the liberal use of explosives can't solve.

Is this game really hard to pick up? I would love to buy it but I don't want another Hearts of Iron game gathering dust in my steam library lol.

Finished my C/I run with the Marathon option, wooo. Lost my psychic to an absurd 3-group ambush and had to spend ages grinding new soldiers up to test (2 of them got hit with a perma-wounded bug, too). Pretty fun overall.
Not as fun as seeing Destiny get obliterated on I/I trying to fight aliens head on, though.

It's relatively simple once you get used to it.

As long as you realize people will die, and you will lose countries you should be alright.

^ Yeah i restarted ironman classic so many times before i just gave up and went "Fuck it, fuck those countries and fuck those retarded soldiers for getting shot, i dont need em!"
Game is awesome fun though :D

I have a love-hate relationship with this game
+ On one hand I love the gameplay
- There are too many RNG factors that drives me crazy. No matter how careful you are a car might blow up, the aliens spawn at a location that when you discover them some of your squad members are already toast. That isn't any strategic or tactical at all.

Biggest gripe vs the original, aliens popping out of thin air. Dumb mechanic. Being hit while in full cover is retarded too, when the visual representation of full cover is often something where you don't even have a line of sight on the enemy without peeking out. Are those "elite" soldiers really so dumb they peek their head right into the plasma shots?

Well at least they don't camp the exit ramp of the Skyranger picking off soldiers as they leave the craft anymore.

Which is too bad as this is a very realistic thing to do to idiots that try to land 100m from your own craft.

Never get into a straight fight where the RNG determines who wins. Scout cautiously in a way you can escape immediately, with everyone else ready. Squadsight.

If you are playing properly, the aliens shouldn't have that many opportunities to even take a shot at you.

i like the RNG, without it, the game would be very boring. and what xDaunt said

snipers all day long baby! just like the sc2 ghosts, snipers are IMBA in Xcom2. get enough of them at a high rank and they will 1 shot everything that moves.

Cars explode one turn after catching fire so like, move. Also don´t stand behind cars they are shitty cover most of the time. Aliens spawning well, don´t sprint, have one guy scout ahead, rest on overwatch and a squadsight sniper is a must. Like others have pointed out you fight in a way so that RNG doesn´t matter. You don´t go for the 65% shot you flank and go for the 90%+ shot.
