Namely, I just copied the save game file after every mission and if any bullshit happened (and it regularly did), then I would copy the old save game into the directory. So basically there was no point in me playing iron man. But I enjoyed it none the less.
"From the creators of Civilization V"... comes the same problem again (for me) of poorly tuned difficulty levels. I like the game, but just like CiV, I can't find decent difficulty settings that feel challenging but fair. It's either way too easy or way too hard with their games.

Normal is good for people bad at strategy games and Classic is great for those that are good with them. Easy is for people who don't play many games period and Impossible is for people that have enough self-hatred that they're willing to put themselves through hell to get achievements.

This sounds like classic kicked your butt :D
This is normal for people that don't want to learn how to play but expect the game to play how they want it to play. Classic is real easy once your learn how the game works. Tell me, did you bother to learn all hotkeys for your race in sc2? If you did, then there is no reason to avoid learning a few things that will make you a better Xcom player.
I may have jumped to conclusions too fast. Classic did kick my butt at first, but on my current play through it has been much different. I have learned from past mistakes and improved my tactics from before, which is a good sign of good game design. I was losing way too many soldiers before and was getting hit with a snowball effect. :D
God. Freaking. Damnit. Every new round of classic ironman is the same. I rape the start, get laser weapons and then some RNG just decides it´s time to get fucked. Flank a muton and i am behind full cover. It´s not a flank shot despite him standing in the middle of a street with no cover. Miss the shot. Two mutons appear out of nowhere beside him(hi2u bug) and they proceed to take the like what, 15% chance shot on my guy behind full cover? Both connect ofcourse, guy dies(my highest level support) low level heavy panicks and shoots another guy in the back for 5. Floater comes in and finishes him off through the wall(full cover). Floater teleport bugs inside the building other guys are camping, no overwatch triggers since he's like inside the wall, flank crits a half hp guy and kills him. In one turn my efforts are crushed to RNG and bugs.
Even without the bugs the shots through full cover are just complete bullshit. Full cover has to be bugged somehow, since this regularly happens to me, guys get shot straigh through it in situations the aliens should try and flank instead or just camp overwatch, they shouldn´t go for those shots but still they do and they only do it when the shots actually connect. Extremely rare that they shoot at someone in full cover and miss.

My 15th classic Ironman run was the one I basically completed. Full plasma weapons, 2 Psi soldiers, all Col, ghost or Titan armor (1 PSI of course), and I just have to do the final mission. Problem is I stopped playing a couple months ago, so I need to get back in the swing of things so I don't screw it up

get rid of titan armor, give archangel to your snipers and ghost to all other soldiers and you will be hard pressed to screw it up^^

I like Titan on the assaults and Heavies because it makes them impossible to kill in 1 shot. Assaults have Lightning Reflexes so they don't need Ghost to dodge reaction shots and they have lower movespeed than supports. Heavies don't want to move and have that defense bonus when in cover to stack with the massive health from Titan armor.
I have a 1/1 split on Archangel and Ghost with my snipers in my other playthrough and like it, getting a sniper into a good position without them getting flanked to set up 2 kills is just too good to pass up, though. Supports ghost always because they can scout with their +3 movement so well.
The door bug on the final mission is absolutely game breaking and unacceptable.
This game was a huge letdown for me. If you only play it for the turn based gameplay then the game is something for you. Good gameplay, suitable graphics and okish strategy wise.
But I was hoping for some epic story unfolding and this was like it was written by a 5 year old. The story is sub par least to say and to conclude it all the door bug that made me wanna throw my computer out of the window.
I managed to beat the final mission by having a huge amount of luck that one of my guys was inside the room while rest of them stuck outside but that one managed to pull the pack so that the rest of the crew could kill them from the other side of the door.
I will never touch another game from these guys again.

Pretty much. Except on council missions. Give everybody titan armor and laugh at thinmen.
Assaults with tactical reflexes (the one that gives 5 defense per enemy on sight) paired with ghost and inmunity to crits are a pita to kill for aliens.

I've beaten the game 4 times and never had this problem. I've had teleporting enemies, packs spawning for the first time in plain sight, and dodgy LoS, but never this.
so i been trying to have a proper run through of ironman classic. Died to thin men 4 times in a row. This playthrough I had an entire squad wiped out but kept going. I just realised that the game really is all about how quickly you can get to shivs. I always found that the first invasion is incredibly hard no matter what combo of ppl I ended up with. But 2 shivs with suppression made it a hilarious cakewalk. God damn they are beautiful machines. Get shivs as quickly as possible!!!!
the thin men just can't handle them either. Especially if you get alloy. They protect your troops, are immune to poison, can suppress the enemy AS WELL! God damn they are godly for mid game.
I got this game for free with Bioshock Infinite. Can anyone tell me approximately how long it takes to play out the campaign if you do it straight forward?
Classic Ironman is pretty tense, I had to restart 3 or 4 games due major misclicks or overall bad choices early on. Might have been able to salvage the game but it was so early I decided to just restart. Current run went pretty well up to laser weapons / carapace armors with few mid rank soldiers (at the time in comparison to rest of team) got killed by unlucky criticals, rookie panic shots and what not.
Then I went to terror mission and forgot to equip laser snipers and the map was bridge with 2 squads of chryssalids playing tag on frontlines while rest of them went rampantly around making zombies, I lost nothing early on thanks to rocket+grenade and some lucky crits. However, later on the last group of chryssalids camped a tight spot and I was out of explosives, even with mass overwatch they ran one of my guys down and right after I got another squad out of nowhere who manage to take down another high rank soldier. After the mission I had killed 19x Chryssalids, damn. At least I got out a high ranked guy from recent mission and had some decent guys in reserve.
After this... small or medium ufo mission, the game decides I have too many good soldiers and teleport a squad of mutons in position to grenade most of my advancing troops out of ass and crit two of them down right after. Even after these major losses I'll probably continue, because otherwise the game's going good. Need to rank more soldiers up since majority of reserves are pretty low rank.
It's pretty fun game but I think they could have done few things differently.
I haven't played this in a while but I noticed there are a good number mods available, can anyone give some info, are any essential / highly recommended, any that are worth looking into that you would consider optional?
I remember the game having some flaws but I can't exactly remember what so a few recommendations would be awesome especially of they bring the game up a few pegs.
I remember there were some mods of XCom, are they any good? Is there one that works good? something that gives you more options (like Ironman etc). Also are they completely game changing etc?
1 that can just fix the problems of the XCom:Enemy Unknown would also be fine ;X
