I'm so close to qq'ing this game lol, or just sticking to non-ironman mode. God damn thin men ruined my game so early on time after time -_- That was in my opinion best mission in Xcom so far. It was so fucking exciting while not feeling unfair do to enemy having crazy luck (as no enemy was ranged). I did have full squad and laser weapon and it was still close

And I'm terrified to play it because I haven't really played at all since then and I'm going to do something stupid ><
Oh yay, 2000th post and mah DT. At that point the game is already easy enough, doesn't matter what difficulty you are on. Just play from it, be extra careful and you will be fine. The stealth ship mission can be a bit tricky so use the ghost to scout and eliminate with squad sight snipers as many heavy muttons you can before going in (assault makes for perfect ghost soldiers, since you can ghost, move, shoot snipers, then run and gun the left overs, and if you remain in cover, thanks to ghost + tactical sense they are quite hard to hit even on impossible for most things). They are a pita because on that mission it's very easy to draw 2 groups of them plus a sectopod. Other than that you should be fine.
I always used the 2 assault ghost with ter3 shotguns, 2 medic ghosts, and 2 sniper arcangels for UFO missions tho. And i always go for extra damage, crit damage perks for assaults. With rapid fire they can kill most stuff in just one rapid fire.

Is starting EW campaign with meld tutorial map more beneficial? From what I noticed it's easier than normal starting map plus you get bonus 20 meld, which you don't have if you start without it. Can anyone confirm that?
EDIT: Is Slingshot pack worth buying?
|
So I started 3 classic games today and lasted about 4-5 missions. First mission with the stealth octopi does me in every time. First time they killed a guy through 2 reaction shots, then didn't die to 2 hits (both 2 damage) stealthed again, grabbed another guy through 1 reaction shot, and crit another guy (really? THEY CAN SHOOT TOO). Second time, same basic story, though one person was already low from a risky move to get the MELD. Third time I rushed a mec trooper and destroyed the space octopi...then walked around a corner and popped 2 sectoids and 3 floaters that destroyed my entire team.*
*OK, to my credit, I had killed 3 sectoids and 2 of the octopi so I thought the worst that could be there was 3 more sectoids...

EDIT: Is Slingshot pack worth buying? Three missions. Not really worth it, except if you like having early game advantadges (blaster launcher). I don't have EW yet, so i can't really answer your question sorry.

Maybe I'm not doing things right, but on Classic/Ironman, that first slingshot mission (Friends in Low Places) just wrecks me every single time. I always feel like I'm set up perfectly, then just miss a big string of 70%+ shots into a team wipe when the first wave shows up.

Dunno eluv, i didn´t buy it, because i found the content wasn't worth the cash for me. Maybe somebody else can tell you help you about it.
I just bought EW, and i am going to start a I/I run. Freaking excited, i hope the mec's are somewhat workable and not just glorified shivs. :D

Is it just me or did they nerf the shit out of overwatch? I swear, I've never missed so many as during my EW playthrough. I just missed 5/6 overwatch shots on 1 guy (and didn't even kill it), and my Col. Heavy hasn't hit an overwatch shot in over 10 missions. Apart from Cryssalids, I haven't hit anything with overwatch in recent memory...it's just ridiculous.
I thought it was -10 Aim but it's feeling like at least -30 now.

Personally I havnt experienced anything different in that regard. What I have noticed though is that my soldiers seem less likely to gain a hp when they level up.
Btw when you get defender medals dont pick the perk that gives immunity to panick cause it doesnt work. Must be a bug.

Also for the second time I've had to reset because a unit got stuck running in place forever.

I swear snipers are garbage now. Before I always had two snipers in my parties, now I groan when I have to take one sniper because I have no other classes available (besides rookies).
|
I have had no problems taking 1 sniper. Reaction shots have a -20 aim penalty. Thank you guys on the info about that medal. Mec are really expensive early game, no way i give up 4sats and skellie/beam weapons progression just for one dude that can't get cover on early game on impossible. I like a lot the new custom options for soldiers, mimetism is the only i plan semi rushing tho
I have been always aggressive with my snipers working in tandem with the assaults and medics, so i don't get the hate, at of course i wouldnt go nuts to.the walls but you really cant on impossible. The extra aim is more valuable on a high damage weapon is a very valuable tool.

My Classic Ironman run was a blast.
I went beam weapons into Mechs. I also play sniperless
Its not so much thier main weapons. Its their secondarys. Flamer is awesome (especially with upgrade) burning 3 odr 4 cryssalids at once is just to good :D Also punshing stuff with the big bist is sooo satisfiying :D
completely skipped genemods, need al my meld to upgrade my mechs
|
MECs are cool, it is one unit with lots of options, I replaced my Heavy with one MEC for most missions. Only problem is that they get hit more often than standard units so I went full defensive with them
Gene modifications are even cooler. I have mimetic skin on a support and on a assault. I scout most of the map with them, always find enemies before they find me. Then I put jump gene mods on both my snipers and my second assault. My snipers are always high up in Titan Armor , and my assault comes from above to kill stuff.
BTW, the assault with mimetic skin, I used him for all covert operation missions. I wholly recommend everyone to do this, they(missions) are so easy once you have a mimetic skin guy that enemies can never find or kill
|
heavies with mimetic for regulars :p

As I play slowly, as in I don't do Assault alien base mission until I have Titan armor and plasma weapons for all, I managed to gather up a lot of money and alloys so I equipped all my squaddies with at least Carapace armor and laser weapons (thank you Exalt :D) while waiting for that base defense mission that I don't know when it will happen.
|
Hey guys, do you prefer to go for carapace armor first, beam weapons or satellite rush? I tried rushing 3 satellites in the first month but seems to me like it's impossible to get 10 engineers for satellite uplink unless you get really lucky and get abduction mission with engis + council mission with engis and cash during the starting 14 days, so I think I'm gonna scratch that idea for now. Also, is meld research worth getting asap or you don't really have funds for it during march and april?
Damn, enemy unknown was really addicting, but with all those new features in enemy within it's even more addicting than before!
|
Beam weapons. You really dont need 3 Sattelites in the first month. You can easily keep all countrys. Just keep the alien base assault around (global panic reduction) But you need beam weapons to oneshot thin men and two shot cryssalids asap.
After beam wepons i got the consumables for airfights, after that mec troopers.
I started in Afrika and then got satelites over south amerika asap.
worked perfectly

If you are playing on classic, one satellite is ok, but get atleast 3 on month 2. But it's better to get more satellites since that allows you to economically explode by month 3. On Impossible, get as many you can while teching up to a bare minimum.
Beam weapons > Caparace armor in both difficulties, for the reasons Snotling
To get the 10 engineers on first month you have to get this (to be honest, i don't know if they changed it, because i got it at my first time with the EW campaign, i think they did):
- Abduction mission at day 6 or less, you choose the engineers. When you end it, you start building a workshop. - Wait until day 10 for an UFO. Sell stuff (if you can, the last thing i seel are alloys and weapon fragments, as they are my highest priority early game), get satellites and save 150 for the satellite uplink.
I wrote long time ago on this thread a build on how to tech first month or buy stuff to get the 4 sats, and if you can't get them, just go the tech route (but always, get the workshop, you will need it).
