And for a first time its hard but second time you know to just set up some overwatch and have 1 fast guy run to the switch and then back off together.
The first time through not knowing the triggers (and the fact that its the only? mission in the game where enemies infinite-respawn) makes it a total bitch first time through, especially without MECs. Also, the first time round the mission happens earlier than in later playthroughs (God knows why).
First time in that mission, I got near the ship's hold and got a view of the whale, I was like...F going in there, and made a firing line looking in the gap, then ran my fastest dude up to the controls, waited for a start of a fresh turn before hitting the button and then backed away pretty controlled by moving half the squad in full sprint ahead, half making a half move then overwatch. I got the mission pretty early in the tech advancement I feel like, so I didn't have MECs or anything that advanced, but they're just chrysalids, anyone with a double attack ability or heavier weapon can pretty reliable one hit them when they get close enough so the crit rate jumps sky high.
2nd time my firing line was like half the map and I just ran the scout in, scout out and everyone full sprint away.
Is it just me, or is the deployment zone way too close to the enemies in some missions? I just went into a UFO landing where I was right on the edge of the UFO. First turn I literally have to move inside of it to get any kind of cover. Kill 2 aliens, had to dash with 2 to get into any kind of cover, set the remaining 2 (both Assaults) to Overwatch. Aliens turn has them shove 3 chrysalids right ontop of the UFO, which then conveniently drop down and kill both my Assaults without them even firing..... I literally had 2 guys die before my 2nd turn..... Lost 2 more before I could even get the rest of them back to the deployent zone to just abandon the mission.....

Once you activate the beacon (or whatever it was), just run. Chryssalids can't reach an Xcom agent doing double movement because they need to spend 1 action moving, and another attacking, so you are safe.

Hey, at least you don't get shot at coming out of the skyranger anymore. Gotta be thankful for the little things!

I never had that happen in EU or EW. Or do you mean that was a thing in the original game way back?

2nd options
No, that was in the original.
Also, first turn, blaster launcher inside your skyranger was one of the most typical causes of mission failure. You learned fast in that game, i remember looking for the low will soldiers, and removing their weapons when aliens assaulted my base... just in case.

And that is why the careful player's first turn was to look out of all the skyranger windows and then deploy a smoke grenade at the ramp. Then end turn.
Anyone else playing Long War? I keep running into the problem of doing fine on the ground but I keep getting all 12 planes shot up and losing my satellite. It doesn't help that I went 2 months without a request that paid scientists so it was end July before I could start researching interceptor upgrades.
