While Teutons (sorry about not knowing the english terms) have best: Attack/resource (swingerclub), Farmpower/resource (with farmpower being the amount they can steal/speed), and also VERY good defensive units (again per resource) the romans have virtually nothing. All their units suck resourceswise. Their best farming/raiding units is like 50% worse than that of the Teutons/Gauls. Gauls still have their great Lightnings (i hope they're called that way for you too) for farming and attacking. Their extreme speed makes them almost equal in terms of farming to the clubswinger-swingerclub . If you're willing to attack 8-10 times with each unit that is. Teutons can easily cope with 3-4 attacks each day and still be top efficient. Racial bonus: Teutons: amazing 30% more from each cranny building bastard (most of the inactives) for anyone farming that's like probes mining 12 instead of 8. if you're thinking broodwar. Bonus gets meaningless come lategame. Their city wall is close to indestructible which makes it more usefull, since in large battles everyone uses battering rams (terms???). Gauls: 100% more cranny power.... great if you intend to get raided every day ... Gets meaningless in midgame. Romans: Ability to build farms and city buildings simultaniously Kicks in mid/lategame when you actually have the resources to do so. Also it's more efficient to build units for more raiding than farms- at least until lategame (6 months at least) so that's pretty bad for them too. In the end it really comes down to costs (resources and grain) for each attackpoint'/defensepoint/plunderingcapacity. And the romeans have virtually (hey at least the have the best atk/grain in latelatelatelategame when resources are meainungless- cheer up) no good stuff.

Should I just head for cavalry asap? Yeah, that's basically why they're behind all game. Get phalanx for a little raiding but be very careful. Don't bother to research swordsmen. Cavalry (Thunders) is your raiding unit, but don't try teching exclusivly, there are inactives around you that gather ressources that really belong to you

It's not that I have played THAT many, rather the ones I played I always did on quite a high level. Planetarion was great when it was still free ah good old times...

1. Raiding > resourcefields. Always, if you can spare the time. Checking for inactives is relativly easy (there are programs out there that do that for you (www.metabund.de works for german servers for example, the gamecreater updates and uploads the games database daily, so if you're into programming you can get some search tool that way as well), especially since when you found one, you "keep" that "farm". (Thus- Teutons never bother with building ressourcefields other than grain at all, go straight for rax and the swingerclub, rest has to do a mix.) 2. Scouting. The way to go, it's how you find your inactives. Many ppl build little to no no troops at all and are content playing simcity- get them. Build lots of scouts, since you lose less scouts when scouting with superior numbers. 3. Building up. If you intend to play hardcore, don't bother with ressource fields at all. Just get grain however you can manage (build up to ten). You can go up and beyond -10.000 grain/hour with several granaries. Marketplace and your raiders will provide. Later you can use your army to conquer a whole 10/10/10/10... built village from some simcityplayer with your army. If you intend to spend little time, crannies and ressourcefields are your way to go. Farm some 'lil inactives with your army, build mostly defense (the little farming you'll do can be done with def units just as well) to make yourself unattractive to the bad guys.

And I doubt you'll play that long. Travian really sucks for competetive gaming since you have no control over battles and can't play "smart" at all due to an utter lack of information. Once you A-moved your zealots into his base they'll run into those lurkers that were not there some hours before and there's nothing you can do about it. Not funny really.

Teutons are best if you plan to play activly. Gauls are ok too, but you have to be veeeeery active to match a teuton.
