You don't have to be connected, I know I wasn't (no internet at all) for my first few plays.

On PC, you don't have a choice, you're not allowed to save the game without it being connected. Your only option is to run as hollow if you dislike being ganked.
Isn't the risk of being invaded a trade off for the extra estus flasks from kindling? I can understand it being annoying, but it's not exactly unreasonable.
Finished my first run of Dark Souls the other day. Really impressed with it on the whole, but I found that the difficulty dropped off heavily towards the end. + Show Spoiler +
Seath, the Bed of Chaos, and Gwyn
were incredibly easy bosses. I've saved all of the DLC content for my second playthrough (new character) so hopefully that'll provide a greater challenge.
Enemies scaling with your level would be nice for Dark Souls II. I understand that that is how Demon's Souls worked. Also, whilst I do appreciate the extremely subtle storytelling, I think being less cryptic about certain things (opening illusory walls, covenants) would be an improvement. PvP improvements sound great from what I've read (looking at you backstabs).

I believe in Dark Souls II you can be invaded both in human form and as a hollow. I suppose they want to reward you for being in human form, which wasn't very advantageous in Dark Souls, if all you want to do is finish the game. So, pulling the internet plug will most likely be the only option.

you missed SO much!!
that was one of the most fun things of the game for me
If you understand french Exserv also made a 30min video of his impressions after playing the game (pre-release version) for a few hours: + Show Spoiler +
In term of video there isn't a lot to go on as it is mostly already seen footage so if you have no idea what he is saying don't bother.
Maybe I'll make a few bullet points (spoiler free) of what he says later (that Vaati hasn't said in the above video).
Edit: -He saw a "Go online" button in the starting menu so maybe online is optional. -There is a gift making the game start on NG+ (somewhat of a hard difficulty). -Tutorial is optional but gives a lot more information than the previous games. -Wonder if the low fps (<30 at times) and slightly long loadings are due to being a pre-release version (according to devs) or if it's just PR and only the PC version will feel good there. -While the technicality wasn't very good on this console pre-version, he is impressed by the artistic direction of the game, more than both DarkS and DemonS. -In the levels he played the game was less creepy than the previous games but since he played only the start there seemed to still be "dark" levels. -Level design follows what DarkSouls did, but even better. Shortcuts, multiple paths, labyrinth, secret passages, a lot of verticality. -Souls are consumable a bunch at a time. Instead of having to do it one by one. -A pnj NPC is used to increase level and estus #/quality. -You can teleport from one bonfire to another at the start of the game. -You can throw items in the fire to get some effects. One item reduces invasion for a time, one item increases game difficulty (same item as the gift) (non exhaustive list) -Apparently if you die too much some enemies won't respawn. However he's unclear as to how it exactly works. He encountered the problem while farming and dying everytime at the end of the route (to restart faster), one of the monster wasn't there anymore. -Agility and Resistance are gone. A new one Adaptability appeared and increases runing speed among other stuff.
Cool info, thanks for making that list. All of that + Vaati's video just made me more excited about the game. In the meantime, revisiting Dark Souls again.
Honestly a lot of that list and the fact this is rated Teen made me cancel my pre-order. Darksouls wasn't that hard of a game but this one sounds like it'll be a cakewalk.

Oh damn... I do so hope that is not true. I do absolutely hate it when games do that. Don't mind the rest of the list though. Well since the PC version is released later, I'll just wait until the console people will clarify a bunch of stuff.

I think its that after you have killed certain enemies large number of times they stop respawning. If you played the online test version you would have noticed that those fat sickle guys stopped respawning after you killed them like 5 times.
Compare this to Dark Souls. For example, the Channeler in Undead Burg before the Gargoyles does not respawn after you kill him. In Dark Souls 2 you would have a certain number of tries to get the drop from him. Or just having to deal with him.

Well I dont think its ever a good idea to preorder games anyway. Thats a good decision imo.

Ah yes, of course. This behavior makes much more sense. Although in the list I quoted it sounds a lot more like "The guy in question respawned a few times, but stopped doing that after I died a bunch." So I am quite worried about that. And no, I did not have access to the Beta testing stuff. Don't tell me there was an open one, that I totally missed. xD
