That being said, they hit really hard and that makes them "difficult". The mechanics are what you'd expect after playing the first Dark Souls and feel natural, and in that respect they are fun. But the difficulty feels a bit artificial in the sense that their damage output just feels incredibly high, at least for the (VERY) limited healing you begin the game with. I have even sunk most of my levels into [what would be Vitality in the previous game] for the HP and it's still rough. And about the O&S stuff, I'm a few hours in, and yes there are already fights where you need to manage more than one boss at the same time lol. I'm doing a lengthy, spoiler-free writeup to discuss with some personal friends about a lot of the differences and my subjective/objective take on whether they are positive or negative (or neither yet lol). Might just turn it into a blog.

The whole draw for me in DS1 was fighting badass motherfuckers like O + S and Artorias, and eventually winning. Like bosses that not only look badass, but are challenging and epic from a lore stand point. Basically just wanted a follow up on fuzzy_panda's question. From the couple of streams I've watched here and there to gauge difficulty it felt very much like the first one difficulty wise. I wouldn't be worried so far. It really looked like a follow up to DS. Currently watching someone die over and over on the same boss (boss named + Show Spoiler + Lost Sinner Also I've seen nobody that liked DS1 not like DS2. If the game was really easier there would have been a massive outcry imo. Damn it's so hard not to just go on Amazon right now and buy it... must... control... myself. Only 6 weeks.

1) There are a lot more super vital stats. In the first game you could beat the game easily with simply base weapon requirements and vit / endurance. In DSII you need Vigor (HP), Endurance (Stamina), Vitality (Equipt load), and Adaptability (Run / Roll / Attack / Cast / etc speed modifier) all at sufficient levels. 2) Enemies are much more aggressive and pack minded. In Demon/Dark Souls often times you could isolate one and go hard. In Dark Souls 2 good luck with that. You get 3-4 enemy packs early and often. Not only that, but the Invincibility frames from BackStabs and Ripostes are now gone. Not only are overwhelming fights much much more common, but they also took away the best tools for dealing with them. Enemies also like to play dead. Sometimes a corpse on the ground when you enter a room is actually dead. Sometimes it isn't. 3) Healing is much much much more limited. Combines Dark Souls and Demon Soul's approach: You have estes, and consumable healing gems. Estes starts out very very minimal at 1 charge. You upgrade your estes by gaining items and giving them to a vendor. Healing is also over time as opposed to instant... it is borderline impossible to heal during a fight, especially so a boss fight, even if you have healing left over anyway. 4) Good shields are much harder to come by. In about 11 hours of play, I havn't found a single 100% physical block shield. In DeS/DrS 100% physical block shields are starting items for 2-3 classes, and are "within 5 minute" pickup available. Best I've found is 85% physical block. 5) Real, accumulative HP penalties for dying.

To get it back you consume an effigy. It's a mix between dark souls and demon's souls system if you will. Dark souls: become undead, Demon's souls: become hollow AND get dropped to 50%hp. Like in demon's souls I'd expect a ring that diminishes the penalty, like making the floor at 75% instead. Which was basically a must have for any first time playthrough.

On the game; I was a bit sceptical with the start of the game, the CGI, the dialogues, the enviroments, the NPCs didnt feel as Dark Souls to me. Now that people are further into the game it feels right, that gritty DS feel is back.

Steam release is the 25th of April. People playing are playing on consoles, either in NA or if they received early copies.

Secondly, even when it is laggy, it is borderline impossible to get backstabs or "backstab fish" like in the first one because there is like a 1 second window where both parties need to stay within a tight range of where it starts. Other thing is in Dark Souls 1, to parry a player had significantly different timing then to parry a PvE enemy. Now they both different from DS1, but they the same as eachother regardless. Only other real note is that I havn't seen any real magic yet, but I think its more a most people started melee, cuz I've personally found a few (presumably, have no attunement, catalyst, or INT yet) nice spells.

But the not-respawning thingy is really depressing me while I move through "ghost town" areas or when I want to change my weapon and I know I can't farm enough souls/titanites to upgrade it. There are smarter way to make the neverending farm less effective than make the enemies dissappear considering that is a game about fighting. Maybe I'll change my mind and for sure this is just my opinion but for now I'm very disappointed with this fundamental mechanic change. For the rest the game is superb. Hmm? I saw enemies respawn when watching a stream yesterday.

For example, you kill a monster 15 times and the 16th time he simply isn't there. I'm not 100% sure though since I still don't own the game ( waiting for PC release ).
