To be honest, thats quite a bummer for me. I just recently started to play DS1 and without farming some areas, I think I had very little chance to complete the game ever, I totally suck.
It's actually the opposite - some bosses have really tough clears from bonfire to the fog gate, and you'll often die or use a ton of estus getting to the boss in the first place. Allowing you to slowly progress towards the boss by eliminating respawns makes the game easier, without making it casual.
The vast majority of deaths will come from normal enemies and the environment. Bosses will, obviously, account for a lot of deaths too, but if you are given attempt after attempt on a boss you'll eventually win. You can always summon help if you need it, though you'd be surprised how much better you get at fighting a boss (and the game in general) after a few attempts.
Leveling in this game is much easier than DkS1, i.e. fewer souls needed, so don't worry about soul farming. The same rules for newbies still apply: upgrade your main weapon as #1 priority, make sure you have enough enough hp/stamina to not instantly die, and find a good shield (100% physical block if possible). If you REALLY need more souls, remember you can lay down a white soapstone and coop!
The Souls series can be extremely frustrating and is not the type of game for everyone. But the first playthrough of a Souls game, finding things out on your own, and the thrill of victory makes it one of the most satisfying gaming experiences out there.

Speaking of environment, how frustrating is the environment in Dark Souls 2?
I absolutely hated how big an obstacle environment played in Dark Souls (the reason why I favored Demon Souls). Although the latter had a poison level (it came at the end when your character was pretty beefy) and those annoying fire tunnels, they were cakewalks in comp. to Blighttown's death darts from nowhere or the endless opportunities of falling to your death in Dark Souls. And then there's the ragiest zone of them all: Tomb of the Giants.

Fire tunnels were waaaaaaay more annoying to me then blighttown,

Blighttown made me quit for 3 months. No joke, the FPS lag on the ps3 along with the poison/toxic fuckers along with me not knowing what curse meant made the zone impossible. I also leveled my char stupidly.
I'm a little more than halfway through DkS2 (to my knowledge) and there's no zone that's made me rage nearly as much as Blighttown. There are a few zones that are poisonous or dark and otherwise annoying, but it's not nearly as bad as DkS1.
A big difference: You can warp between bonfires at will. If an area is frustrating you, then you warp out and tackle another zone. No more being stuck in the bonfire in Blighttown and having to fight through literally 3 and half zones to get back outside to buy a curse removal item. It does a lot for sanity.

One poor soul did not know the difference between White Sign Soapstone and Red Sign Soapstone.

W-what day is it? I-is dark souls 2 out for PC yet? I seem to have forgotten... Damn it... don't go hallow, don't go hallow...

Speaking of stupidly leveled chars, my dude was a pure Str. & Vit. mofo with no pyromancy, and not enough attunement to learn a spell.
After buying and using all the transient curses from that vendor in the tunnel in the main area to explore, I found myself in a pretty horrible predicament when I got cursed by a lizard in the hollowed out tree and had to trek through that haunted zone to the top of the church to talk to that red mage and have my curse removed. I swear, that ladder on the right side was the only place in the entire game where I experienced disgustingly low FPS. Having to climb it about 30 times didn't help.
Everyone rags on Blighttown, but oddly enough, Blighttown ran beautifully for me on my PS3. That ghosty area, on the other hand, was a real annoyance.
I'm still not sure whether I'll be getting DS2 on PS3 or PC, but I'm waiting until I have the option.

Hopefully the PC versions will have substantial better graphics, if this is the case I'd consider taking also the PC version. For now I'm playing and really enjoying it on PS3, but the framerate is still an issue since the tutorial and very often the game lags even in the menus.
|
The only thing I want from the PC version are downgradable graphics options. It always bothered me that DkS didn't have those, it never felt like a PC game, but just a copy paste from consoles ( which is probably what it was ).

I am thinking of replaying DS1 before buying DS2 on the PC and I was wondering what a good build would be. I prefer to not use spells. I played through the first one with mainly a strength vitality build. It was pretty rough. Any pointers?
|
Dex with katanas is fun. Optionally dex+faith with a weapon buff, but that's overkill for single-player lol. Katanas or Great Scythe are some of the dex weapons I had the most fun with before DkS2 came out.

Just use a quality build so you can wield most of the weapons in the game .
|
I'd also say quality build + pyromancy,, not using spells or ranged attacks is missing some good fun imo. I'd buy a reinforced club from the first undead merchant too :D Basic but surprisingly awesome weapon (good moveset, good damage), perfect for the firs thalf of the game or even more.

Has it been confirmed that the pre-downgrade version will be the PC version?

If you want "easy" mode then go for heavy armor (stone armor then havels/giants) with havel's ring. The weapon choice is up to you really. If you want to dish out heavy blows go for Demon's Greataxe (31/46 str), if you want a faster weapon go for the Great Scythe along with dex and if you really want to "power-game" and become invincible in PvE then go for 16str/10dex (Zweihander stat requirements) along with some attunement for pyromancies and all the rest goes into vit and endurance.

Nope. All the "good looking" footage was on PC, but there is no garantee, that they will enable the shadow/lighting again for the PC Version. I doubt it, because they seem very incompetent when it comes to technical stuff.
