No, it's separated. You can do both white and black tendancy events in one game. (and kill both the white and black phantom of a single NPC too) And yeah DeS is still amazing. For now my real only grippe with DS2 is that there are way too much bonfires. IN DS1 it was a big stress to reach the next bonfire (and even more so in DeS as you had to beat a boss before each bonfire which made you die often the first time you finally managed to cross a level), in DS2 it seems there are bonfires everywhere between each difficult or semi difficult part.

Its not the 60% of my healthbar each spell does. Its not even the waste high water that forces you to walk and eliminates your ability to properly dodge and close gaps on the mages. Its not even that there are stealthy fast mother fuckers hiding in the water near the mages that can two shot you. Its not even the Five or six Archdrake warriors that rush you all at the same time. I died probably like 60 times there... -.-

If you didn't know there was a hidden bonfire that lets you skip about 80% of the fortress if the boss in that area killed you, the game forced you to pretty much run Sen's fortress all over again (unless you know there were transportation cages).

Earthen Peak+ Show Spoiler + Secret doorway on the ledge above the boss' door I think the thing that got me most irritated are the Fire Lizard dudes in the bottom of the forrest. Pretty sure I've only killed them by plinking away with a bow while abusing some sort of LoS. I haven't been back in a while but the experience was... humbling. My biggest complaint is that the 100% physical block shields are just a bajillion times better than anything else, exposing you to being chipped out makes so many of them utter junk. Well, that and the several ledges/items that you have to TP out of once you've grabbed them because the only other choice is plummeting to your doom, feels like a design cop-out.

Or just man up and beat the whole game without a shield. Rolling is king. My first run of the game I two handed whole way through with a Faith build. Tbh, I personally like a lot of the non-100% physical shields much better anyways. For example the Spell-Parry shields (Spirit Tree for Blue Sentinals Cov, the golden wing hidden in the Bastille) and the Stamina Recovery shields (the Slumbering Dragon dropped by those archdrake fucks, and the Shield of the Insolent) all kick ass. Smaller shields have much better parry animations with like 4-5 times as many parry frames as some of the bigger and heavier shields. That, and if you abuse shields too much anyway, you'll get skull-fucked by anyone who can press forward+R1.

Even disregarding the huge nerf to stamina damage on blocking in DS2, dead angle attacks still hit through shields and pretty well any good weapon can pull them off except rapiers, spears. Parry and rolling more reliable ways to mitigate damage. Also give you more offensive capabilities. Kind of like fending off early game marine pressure with queens instead of spines. Gives you more offensive potential, and no matter the Game state you have larva at your control. If you wanted a challenge, no one forced you to equip a shield. You could have even went Coven of Champions like myself. However, I'm not even close to that level and I am terrible in timing my rolls so I have to rely on shields to move through the game. It's actually rather refreshing that a game allows for so many different playstyles. Each one is viable, but some require more skill than others.

You don't even need weapons man! On topic, I like how shields are now. I'm still using some wooden shield and I've finished NG, just wrapping up odds and ends before I transition over.

I didn't suggest I'm running around with my shield up all the time, merely that there are very few shields you can count on to block when you decide to go that route. I can't say it's surprising you'd find shields with secondary effects better if you're running around 2h everything with maybe some lightning spears thrown in. As you say 2h with parry/roll is much flexible/stronger, and I found it trivialized some aspects of the game I liked. Different strokes. My complaint was mainly that I found the shields to largely be a homogenous mass with a few exceptions (the sram regen/spell parry), and that seems like a bit of a bummer. Drangleic shield has 100% phys block and is available after Pursuer. The Rebel Greatshield is available after you get a safe way to fall down into the pit (and a ranged attack to kill those salamanders because F THAT trying to kill them in melee). With the introduction of a way to see your agility stat now and the limited testing done to identify how it helps, I think shields are in a pretty good place. There's tons of shields in the game, if you want to look them up in the wikidot to find one that best suits you. Don't forget you can infuse shields with elements to block more of that type (magic, dark, etc).

I dont mean to be hostile, that isn't the intention there. I just dont really think its a valid concern. If anything, shielding mechanics in this game are much more varied.
