"Encumbrance is relevant. The main break points for it are at 25%, 37.5%, 50%. You probably want to be below 25%, because slow rolls suck." I thought he was referring to the above poster who wanted a rundown of DS2 basics. Where you would say stay under 70% because slow/fat rolls suck.

And, to add on to MrCon's comment, the reason why hexes are strong in DS2, especially resonant/g.resonant is because of the damage they deal when they use up souls. Resonant uses 100 souls and has a 100% damage modifier that's added upon the base damage, while g.resonant uses a 500% damage modifier on top of the base damage.

As for levelling, just do whatever you want, especially on your first character. Keep in mind that for PvP (or co-op) SL (Soul Level) is completely irrelevant at the moment. The only thing that matters is your SM (Soul Memory, the total amount of souls you earned on any given character). In practice this means that longterm if you don't level up past a certain point you'll be at a disadvantage against people who do. Most people who genuinely care about PvP similar to DS1 still stop at certain levels (120-150 range is common, more on the higher end at the moment) and then manage their SM very carefully to not end up in the higher tiers. Since that system is pretty bonkers it might change until the PC release but for now this is what we have.

Yeah no problem I think he was just saying he didn't play much DS1, so he needed help for when he gets DS2 on PC. Just wanted him to have the right info if that's the case.

Not stuff like "go here for OP item", but like noob-friendly classes/builds, good stats to spend souls on, or anything else. Here is what DS1 taught me and what I'll be doing in DS2 almost blind: -Take notes of area you can't go in yet. Locked doors or area with enemy too tough yet. -This is a nonlinear game. If an area seems excessively hard, try going somewhere else first (perhaps according to your previous notes) -Sometimes running past tough enemies to get some loot (and then dying) is worth the effort. -Move slowly, look around for hidden passages, take your time. You don't want to miss a bonfire closer to a boss or some good loot. -Upgrading weapons is the most important thing. Pick a weapon you like and always upgrade it when you can. -Be very patient when fighting. This is a game that rewards patience and carefulness, not running around like an ass. -It's okay to lose some thousands of souls here and there. Don't sweat it, live on it's not a big deal. -You will want at least some form of ranged attack just in case. A bow or magic/miracles or pyromancy. -Use the style of defense you are the most confortable with but take the time to test both methods. Usually you'll have the choice between using a shield a lot or not and between a fast or mid roll (light or medium encumbrance). Shields drain your stamina and are easy to use, rolls require more practice but are more efficient in mobility and endurance. A fast roll will give you the best mobility and the better rolls, a mid roll has worse rolls but a higher defense allowing for more mistakes. -Understand how the stat system works. Weapons scales, ascending, encumbrance. You will want to raise some stats that match the archetype you want, not all at once.

Actually, starting with a pyro is nice to take the habit of using pyro. To upgrade your weapon, you can buy infinite (large) titanite shards and easily farm chunks, so at least upgrade every weapon and armor you like until it require chunks. The difference between a char with all +0 gear and a char with +5 (or better) weapon and +5 on every piece of armor is really huge. A good way to start DS1 is to go in the cemetary (you're not supposed but it's very near so you can die without consequence) to loot everything you can, especially the winged spear that allows you to attack with your shield up, then buy the 100% physical defense shield from the first undead merchant. There's a lot you can do and loot before really starting the game in DS1, you can get some good stuff if you take the key as a starting bonus.

I read that the victor stone covenant makes the game harder and I unwittingly played with it for quite a while. How does it affect the game? Did a similar mechanic exist in DeS or DkS?

As others have said, lowering equip burden has no impact on roll speed, but increases distance. It also increases stamina regen. The number of iframes (i.e. time that you are invincible) does not change with equip burden; only AGI impacts the number of iframes. That said, increased roll distance is oftentimes the same as having additional iframes, as long as you are rolling through attacks. You need to clear the entire impact zone of a weapon/spell during the roll iframes, so if you don't travel far enough, larger weapons will still hit you (especially if you roll the same direction as a swing, instead of into it). This is why lower equip burden FEELS like it gives you more iframes. To give a concrete example, let's take the Old Iron King's rotating flame breath attack. If you didn't know, you can actually roll through the fire without taking damage. However, if your AGI is low (i.e. few iframes) and equip burden is high, you will never roll through the entire width of the flame during your iframes. But with high AGI and low equip burden, you'll frequently roll far enough during the iframes to completely avoid the attack, end up on the other side of the fire, and continue to pummel the boss.

Also increases your chances to be invaded. Kind of weird though, you rank up in this covenant through Awestones, which you get from Phantom interactions (mostly PvP). Its pretty much a convoluted hardmode button.

Its pretty much a convoluted hardmode button. Awestones are gotten from either PvP / PvE sources. PvP red phantoms that invade you online, (NPC) red phantoms that invade you, such as guthry/rhoy. (You can actually just farm these using ascetics over and over, even offline) As for PvE, specific mobs throughout the game and in areas will drop the stones as well. If you want a detailed list, head over to the wiki.
