Or are you telling me that you can finish No Mans Wharf with one weapon, while going into all of the side buildings, without using any magic? I highly doubt that. Maybe you can split the whole thing into three runs, first getting all the side buildings, returning to base, opening up the backdoor, returning, and then maybe finally killing the boss. How does any of that enhance the game? Not at all, it is just annoying.
I recall 1-2 instances where I swapped weapons at some point per playthrough because of durability. Or rather I just used powder in those spots. Once more, it's not a "bullshit system", it's a confirmed bug - that's easily to work around if you don't punch corpses. Literally.
@above: I'm pretty sure fixing DS2 to 30fps fixes all of those issues, would have to dig around reddit for this though.
Do late game weapons have more durability? My falchion literally last from the cardinal tower bonfire (through the flame barrel exit) over the bridge behind the locked gate where pate is to the corridor where the 4 guys jump you. That is nuts...
*edit*
I'm not going to be popular for saying this, but so far, Dark Souls 2 pales in comparison to Dark Souls.
I've been finding it hard to sit down and finish NG+ to get to Wellager in NG++. I mean I am just about done with the Plat Trophy (two Rotten kills with Lucatiel and two Congregation kills with Bemhart, and the remaining exclusive spells) but I just can't keep pushing forward for some reason. I'll get it eventually I guess.
Hippo grab boxes are ludicrous. Bait them into sitting and never try to attack from their front.
Weapon repair sorcery and powder is totally a thing if you must have your high FPS experience.
I am planning to fire up Demon's again once I finish this trophy, hopefully that's enough motivation for me.

you get a ring that slows durability loss when you get to the lost bastille. besides that i agree with you that it's a pretty shitty part of the game, and it seems random which weapons have painfully low durability.
besides the ring, the only major tip i can tell you for managing durability is never swing at a dead enemy because the game is bugged and like doubles your durability loss when you swing thru a corpse.
Basically corpses are still seen as "solid" by the engine, but your weapon can traverse them like they're not here. So every frame your weapon "touches" the corpse, its durability lower. On big weapons this is very problematic, as a lot of the weapon touches a lot of the corpse on a killing blow, and it blows durability enormously. Great hammers, great clubs are unplayable because they break during a boss fight, you'd need 5 or more of the same weapon to finish the fight. Swords are not that affected, except very fragile swords with like 20-30 durability. My greatsword (70 durability) can do an entire level without problem, even a long one like no man's wharf.
To test this, get the santier spear (500 durability !), join the rat covenant and go to door of pharros. The enemies are friendly to you, so your attacks just go through them. Attack a mastodon (huge enemy) with the santier spear and it'll lose like 30 durability per hit (and half if you're at 30fps, as durability is calculated each frame which is the root of the problem). This is also a big problem when you're a blue phantom helping a player, as your attacks go through enemies and the player you're helping without damaging them, but damaging your weapon.
there's probably mod support for custom resolutions
no idea about connection issues, the severs were a bit wonky a few weeks back. could be a repeat, just try coming back later and it might work? dont know

ahh i got it working, something was fucked up with my norton antivirus
Don't think I'll buy the DLC, kinda don't want to play more DS 2.
It's weird, after I stopped playing DS 2 I wanted to play Demon Souls again...
Each of the 3 games are pretty different. Couldn't really tell you my favourite one, although it wouldn't be DS 2. Each game brings some new things to the table and refines it but they also lose some good things from the previous game.
