I guess you could say that it lacks soul... Don't get me wrong, it's still a good game, but just not as grossly incandescent as the first one. I thought it improved a lot on the first game, the world felt so much bigger with more to explore and in general just more depth to it all. I like both though so I may be biased.

The last patch from June didn't really solve much, as this video shows: At least it fixed the severely broken things like Havelyns and monastery scimitar + Santier spear combo. I haven't heard much about the upcoming patch, but I've heard a rumor that in PvP, healing will be disabled. Yes, that includes the invaded host as well. That's awesome. I'm tired of having to take down ~5-10k HP just to kill someone because they chug estus so much haha. Speaking of which, I've been seriously wrecking with Affinity + Dark Weapon + Numbness + Dark Orb + Sun Sword.

It's not surprising, how often I've been invaded with like 10% HP, if I can't heal, this sucks a lot :o But a lot of good patches yeah, basically everything that the community asked, like no healing in arenas, nerfing havel and helix, limiting the soul gained when killing invaders so a hacker can't ruin your low level character anymore, things like that. The changelog takes 15mn to read so there's a LOT of changes.

A buddy of mine introduced me to the series with Demon Souls, and it's kinda been a tradition now that we set up our PS3's and TVs side by side and try our hands at the games, see who does what how fast. I'm a hardmode kinda guy, so my Demon Souls character, as far as I can remember, got a mailbreaker from a knight early on in the game and said "THIS IS MY WEAPON"... then made it to the valley of defilement, beat the boss after the swamp bullshit, and ragequit forever because any map that replaces my ability to dodgeroll with a 3 second selfstun is fucking retarded, also fuck this game. Also not helping was that my buddy was a mage that did more melee damage than I did most of the game, because magic damage Crescent Falchion is apparently strong. My Dark Souls character parried the fuck out of everything, because counterkills are god. I ended up beating the game with a +something uchigatana. I'm stubborn and refuse to do anything but spam a boss until I kill it from the moment I find it... which normally worked okay, but finding Sif at soul level 23 was not the best thing that ever happened to me. Thank god for dodgeroll invuln frames. All that said - Dark souls 2 is fucking boss. Invuln frame dodge rolls are still in, dual wielding is less awkward, you can still parry a whole bunch of shit, there aren't TOO many unfair situations or just assholish design things... Yeah, it's pretty great. My only complaints so far are Royal Rat Authority ('nuff said) and how Old Iron King felt like a Diablo 3 boss. I'm also not that big a fan of the silly parry animations... the slow motion sit on the ass followed by stabbing 'em in the face is much less elegant than standard Dark Souls implementation. I dunno what people are talking about with the "Most maps make you feel like you'd be better off caster / ranged". I've played through DS2 so far with a rapier in one hand and a greatsword in the other, and have managed just fine. Almost all the ranged attacks you'd actually have to be scared of are telegraphed supremely and on timers. And no normal enemy has given me much of any trouble.

Dragon's peak is fine as a melee. Amana's is much easier with a bow but it's only actually 'hard' as a melee when crossing the final area to the 'bug' checkpoint.

Demon's souls was a shit game in most everything but setting the precedent for Dark Souls, imo. In order for Dark Souls 2 to fall below that game in terms of quality, it literally has to force-equip me with a crossbow and stick me in a rail sequence for a 15 minute long map. And that's not going to happen.

DS has a significant early curve where you're trying to make sense of mechanics and everything else the game throws at you paired with RPG style stat progressions. While the level/monster designs are brilliant the lack of early handholding makes for a difficulty curve that is much less welcoming than most modern games. There's definitely a 'hump' to get over as a new souls player, but once you do it's very worthwhile and satisfying.

Keep playing and check wikis if you struggle too much. Once you get the hang of it it's easily one of the best singleplayer games in my opinion, and the multiplayer is awesome too!
