f2p might not be an excuse, but my internet sure is T.T .
As for grouping. There are frames that up droprate so to say and more people = more spawn. So grouping makes farming faster. There are a few rare scenarios that are locked to 5-8 players. But outside of those things I solod pretty much all the content. Needs some specialized frames in some situations though. But I am 90% of the time on Valkyr hehe.

great thing about the game is that you just play and do things at ur own pace. i'm mastery level 15 and still haven't completed all of the nodes on the starmap yet.

A lot of the guides and resources I've used so far for beginners are mostly pre-POE. Should I try and keep up with the new quest line(s) from the Plains (Saya/Onkko stuff) as I progress? Or should I just focus on planets+junctions and come back to rush the quests later?

The state of PoE currently is very grindy. Warframe is a grindy game and everyone knows this, but PoE sets the bar at a whole new level of the grind-olimpics. I think you should set any serious PoE intentions to the side currently and focus on the main game. The quests are good, there is a lot frames to be farmed, weapons to be built and a whoooole lot of high end mods to be acquired. You seriously aren't missing out on anything yet. And I doubt people would want you for eidolon kills without moderately higher end gear. PoE will change soon, bounty rework, focus 2.0 rework etc. The only thing you're missing out on is fishing I guess, if you're into that.

Does anyone here still play? And/or if you don't play often anymore are you at least experienced and willing enough to answer a few questions lol?
I try to pick this back up every couple months whenever I'm burned out on whatever other grindy game I'm usually dabbling in (usually Path of Exile) but every time I come back there's always so many questions and things that confuse or frustrate me that I have trouble getting super invested. I really love the actual gameplay itself, it's very satisfying, unique, fluid, fast-paced, etc etc etc. But the overall approach and "what to do, where to go, what to get" is always either too overwhelming or too confusing. Googling around for resources and references now and then is fine, but with Warframe it's excessive and I often I feel like I never come out knowing much more than I went in with.
I've been keeping a running list of questions and shit that bug me often whenever I play and I wanted to just dump it and get some nice succinct answers here, instead of digging through wikis and old posts that might be out of date and sometimes conflicting/vague responses. But if no one still plays I won't bother lol.

I am currently not playing, because i can't handle the grinding. If you have some questions, i am willing to try to answer them, however.
The main thing you need to realize is that there are buttloads of different things you can do. But you don't have to do all of them. Set some short-term goal for yourself, and maybe a longer-term goal. (All of your goals are basically "acquire a thing", as Warframe is mostly a game about acquiring stuff)
|
Hey sweet. Yeah I don't mind the grind when I'm in the mood, like I said that's pretty much the only reason I give it a shot now and then, love the gameplay but just don't really have a goal which hurts the motivation, and always have so many questions buzzing around in my head. So with that in mind... Edit: forgot to add, I'm around the Jupiter/Europa range (just unlocked Europa but I really haven't done much on Jupiter either)
1) WHEN do I need to start seriously worrying about damage types and status effects? Should I just be looking for every ounce of damage I can get at this point regardless of type? Or is it worth sacrificing a damage mod for a specific type (say, corrosion/viral?) and/or boosting status chance this "early"?
2) Is there a smarter or more efficient way of gaining Mastery Ranks? New weapons and some missions are gated behind MR but progress feels very slow. I thought the idea was just keep using new weapons that aren't maxed yet, which I have been. Is that wrong? 2.5) Related: Is it bad to sell shitty weapons I doubt I'll use? Or is it important to keep them around for affinity/MR? I need slots for new weapons but don't know if selling old/bad ones is a terrible idea for whatever reason.
3) Forma and Catalysts/Reactors and all that... any reason to save them or should I go nuts? Are they common enough that it's worth doubling every weapon/warframe I have or should I try to wait? I've never Forma'd either, I'm intentionally sitting on my max level Soma Prime as a safe go-to weapon if I get into trouble somewhere, but should I Forma it now and start re-leveling it because the extra polarity is that good? Also are there specific polarities that I should lean toward for different weapon types or Warframes? Serration, Point Strike, Vital Sense and Split Chamber are all the same polarity (Madurai) for example, and seem pretty huge for any rifle...
4) Should I be going out of my way to focus on fleshing out my mod collection (still missing some important ones like multishot?) or is that something that just naturally happens as you play from random drops? 4.5) How much should I be slamming endo into "core" mods like Serration, Point Strike, etc? Should I be desperately leveling those as high as possible because they're so important? Or should I be spreading my endo around to get just a few levels into many different mods?
5) Is there a big advantage to fully fleshing out the star chart as you progress, or better to just get the junctions done ASAP and focus on getting to harder planets and unlocking quest lines?
6) Still haven't really fucked around with the POE content yet much... is it ok to leave all that until late/end game (was recommended to me in the past) or is it useful to get into earlier on (I know there have been some changes since it was first introduced)?
7) Syndicates? Anything to care about other than the max rank weapon? Currently "doing" Steel Meridian for Vaykor Hek but not that seriously
I will probably keep thinking of more but these are most of the big stuff that comes to mind and isn't necessarily stuff I can just check the wiki for. My only "goals" so far are mostly just slowly working away at a few of the low rank weapons I see recommended sometimes but I haven't thought about building new frames or which ones are even a good idea since I think some of the ones I'm more interested in (Mesa, Nidus, Valkyr maybe? idk) I think aren't available until later? So I'm just playing a max rank Frost Prime sort of indefinitely and maybe that's a terrible/unproductive idea?

I sadly don't get a good feeling about what point of the game you are at currently (Meaning, how much stuff do you have )
Keeping that in mind, i will try to answer your questions in a general way
1) WHEN do I need to start seriously worrying about damage types and status effects? Should I just be looking for every ounce of damage I can get at this point regardless of type? Or is it worth sacrificing a damage mod for a specific type (say, corrosion/viral?) and/or boosting status chance this "early"?
You don't really need to worry about them a lot. You could, if you wanted to minmax, have different weapon loadouts for missions with different enemy types. I was always to lazy to do that. Usually you also don't really have to choose damage or specific types, but just "what kind of elemental damage do i want on this weapon". Depending on what gun you use, you will have some amount of slots open for elemental, usually 2-4 in a good loadout. Into these you put whatever elements you want to have, since base elemental mods are neither very expensive nor very expensive to max out.
One exception: If you are fighting sentients, and are not yet doing the plains of eidolon magic stuff, you need as many different damage types as possible on your loadout, as they gain immunity.
No. You can obviously grind for mastery by doing harder/more farmy missions and having only one good thing equipped (Or being a dick and letting you team carry you completely, but don't be a dick). My general rule of thumb is to have at least one shitty item on me at all times for levelling. You level mastery a lot faster in some harder missions with lots of enemies, like high-level defense or survival. But mostly it is just something you do on the side.
You can sell shitty weapons, especially those which are easy to get. But you should level them to full mastery first.
Catalysts/reactors are pretty rare. You get blueprints from time to time from missions, but if you want to double everything, you need to invest some platinum, which you might rather want to use for weapon/frame slots. I have never bought any for plat, despite having a bit of the stuff lying around due to being inactive for a few years, which meant that some of the shit i had was suddenly valuable. Use Catalyst and reactors only on stuff that you think you will be using long-term. Good weapons and frames that you enjoy using. However, stuff without catalyst/reactor is basically unusable in the later game missions, as it simply doesn't do enough without all the extra mods.
Forma is not as rare, and a bit more annoying to use. Use Forma for a very few very high-end items. Make a plan for the final loadout you want in that items. If you don't have the mods at a high enough level, you don't need to forma yet. Forma if the mods you want don't fit into the thing you want to use them in, in a way that allows you to do so (while possibly having some extra flexibility just in case. Formaing for serration is always good, as you will always use serration in any gun it fits into. Similarly, your Soma wants the crit mods and is shit without them, so you can forma it for those as well. Only do this if you can't fit everything you want into your doubled weapon.
Not all weapons play well with crit, some have very low crit modifiers or base crit chances. Soma wants crit majorly. Serration and split chamber go into everything, that is true.
Farming mods is very hard, though some have very specific drop situations, and it is sometimes fun to do. If you don't want to do this, you can buy most common mods incredibly cheap (1-5 plat). At some point, you want to start trading. Sell some doubles, buy some things that you want. It is a necessary part of the game. Don't trade in the trade channel unless you want to go mad, use a trading site with a better interface(It used to be warframe market when i was still playing). Endo use isn't clear. Don't ever level mods that you are not currently using obviously. You eventually want maxed serration, but the cost is prohibitively expensive in the beginning, since every new level doubles the cost of the last one. So for the price of getting serration from 9 to 10, you could instead get another mod of the same rarity from 0 to 9, or two from 0 to 8, 4 from 0 to 7. So don't max stuff out right away, but spread the endo around a bit between the major mods that you are using.
5) Is there a big advantage to fully fleshing out the star chart as you progress, or better to just get the junctions done ASAP and focus on getting to harder planets and unlocking quest lines?
It is very useful to have access to everything to be able to go to any alert you like. Alerts are a major way of getting rare stuff, and if you don't have access to the node the alert is on, you can't get that rare thing. The other advantage is that you can deploy harvesters on planets which you have completed, which allow you to gain free materials.
That being said, getting access to harder stuff and missions is also useful.
6) Still haven't really fucked around with the POE content yet much... is it ok to leave all that until late/end game (was recommended to me in the past) or is it useful to get into earlier on (I know there have been some changes since it was first introduced)?
Can't help you here sadly, i don't know a lot about those mechanics. It seemed like a completely tacked-on sidegame to me, similar to the archwings. Basically, warframe at this point is three mostly unrelated games with some overlap. Warframe, Archwing and PoE magic stuff.
7) Syndicates? Anything to care about other than the max rank weapon? Currently "doing" Steel Meridian for Vaykor Hek but not that seriously
Nah. Just do any you like by slapping the sign on your back. You will eventually get a weapon and some mods, but you can trade for those of the syndicates that you don't have, and none of them are very expensive. You can usually trade yours for theirs.
I will probably keep thinking of more but these are most of the big stuff that comes to mind and isn't necessarily stuff I can just check the wiki for. My only "goals" so far are mostly just slowly working away at a few weapons I see recommended fairly often but I haven't thought about building new frames or which ones are even a good idea since I think some of the ones I'm more interested in (Mesa, Nidus, Valkyr maybe? idk) I think aren't available until later? So I'm just playing a max rank Frost Prime sort of indefinitely and maybe that's a terrible/unproductive idea?
Frost prime is a good frame. It is especially useful in defense missions. Though i would try to get some variety going, just to avoid boredom. A loki is a very useful thing to have for spy missions, and there are a bunch of different frames which do cool DPS stuff. If your frame is maxed, consider tacking a lens onto it.
Getting weapons is also a good goal.
You seem to overestimate the importance of XP, as far as i can tell. You should try to gain access to some later missions. I remember levelling stuff from 1-20 in 1-2 missions, if they are the right missions. But i guess you need some gear base to be able to do those missions, too.

Yeah I edited in my progress later, totally slipped my mind sorry -- I just unlocked Europa. I have Excalibur, Frost Prime, and Trinity (second two each from Twitch Prime stuff I think lol) and like 7-8 weapons total? I JUST bought my first two extra weapon slots with the 50 starter platinum so however many that is.
All of this is super useful and really helps with peace of mind. Mostly I won't be afraid to lug maxed weapons and frames around and only "level" 1-2 things at a time. Rather than a loadout full of unoptimized stuff, which has definitely caused some artificial hurdles. That Soma Prime carries me lol. I'll hold on to my reactors and catalysts for stuff I know I'll use and love, and I'll only start Forma'ing when I literally can't fit all the mods I KNOW I want onto one frame/gun. It sounds like leveling things back up goes way quicker later on, I was worried you'd want to "forma sooner so you can max the weapon out again" or something but that's probably not an issue.
Sounds like I'll just keep progressing the star chart with a decent loadout instead of worrying about crafting or farming anything super important yet. Maybe keep an eye out for the warframe parts that I want with the help of the wiki. Like I said I'm not put off from the game due to boredom per se, just so overwhelmed and/or confused at times that not knowing what to do next can burn you out. I'm probably too worried about doing everything as efficiently as possible, instead of just playing the game first and then caring about that stuff after I actually have access to all the missions and blueprints and materials etc etc etc.
Thanks a ton this is really great info! If I think of anything else I'll probably post more but this helped a lot. A lot of it is more subjective / informal knowledge that's easier to just ask a vet about instead of looking through old and divisive forum threads. For everything else there's a wiki lol.

yeah i normally carry a fully forma'd primary or secondary, and have my other two slots levelling mastery fodder weapons. honestly, the cool thing about warframe is that u can progress at ur own pace and set ur own goals.
|
Warframe can be very overwhelming yes. Set goals and work towards those I found works best. Unlock the whole star map, do quest chains, grind specific frames/weapons you like.
Sidearm is a good slot to keep a leveling weapon in while you do stuff. Or level a main weapon with a melee/caster frame ect.
Valkyr btw is a great solo frame (or it just to be when I played), it drops from the Jupiter boss so not that hard to farm. Being able to become actually invincible while doing tons of damage can really carry you through tougher missions and bosses.
|
Yeah I plan to mostly play solo casually unless I can rope some friends back in, so I'm really interested in Valkyr, Mesa, and Nidus at the moment. Will probably do Loki too for spy stuff as Simberto mentioned. Seems fun. I'm just glad to know I don't need to feel like I'm ALWAYS leveling EVERYTHING for maximum progress. Cuz switching frames or primaries is going to be super painful after getting used to Frost and the Soma Prime, let alone both at once. I think I'm trying a Grakata(?) now and it's miserable lol. Sounds like I shouldn't feel bad about keeping at least one sick maxed weapon around to carry me so that will make everything smoother again.
|
You should not only not feel bad about it, you should do it, for two reasons:
A) It makes you not go mad B) You can do harder missions and do them faster (And thus progress more and level the other stuff you are carrying faster) if at least some of your gear is good. It doesn't all need to be good, but some of it should be.
I would aim for having a set of one good frame, primary, secondary and melee. That way you can swap any of them out to level something else and still be at least partially capable. The only situation i would go full on levelling stuff is when doing really low-level missions with a friend.
One thing i would suggest trying is doing some missions with randoms. It can sometimes be annoying to basically just follow people around, but on the other hand it can show you some cool stuff that you might wanna have at some point, and it allows you to progress faster. Especially when doing void stuff you will want to do them with groups anyways, as the rewards scale. And the random groups usually work very well. And a big advantage is that you actually level stuff that you don't use. Because XP from people other than you gets distributed and split evenly between your frame and all three of your weapons. This means that you can level stuff just by carrying it around while doing intersting stuff with your good weapons.
At some point, low-level weapons are just not doing anything. With good mods, you can increase the damage of a weapon by a few thousand percent. And some guns are just really bad even with good mods (like the grakata) Soma Prime is a gun which is endgame usable, with its only downside being its ammo consumption.

yeah don't play completely solo, it's mostly disadvantageous imo. the more players in a squad, the more enemies that spawn, which equals more affinity and resources. the main problem with playing solo is, kills you get with a weapon only give affinity to that weapon. but AOE shared affinity from allies getting kills goes to all of your gear. there are ways of farming affinity solo, for example running spy missions and stealth killing with ivara

Bought some starter package with 750 plat on sale. Had a blast finishing main story line, trying new frames and weapons. Ran out of plat. Don't feel like farming for plat, don't feel like buying more either because there is a daily reward that gives you 75% reduced price on it. Kept logging in one week just to check for that reward - Haven't logged in in over two weeks. I think I am cured. Was fun though.

I think that buying plat in this game is a bad idea. The reason being that the game is all about the grind to obtain stuff, and once you buy plat, and notice that you can trade for basically anything with that plat, there is no longer anything to grind for, the only thing to do is buying plat and using the trade system.

I bought the Prime version of the Frame I liked most from another player because it was vaulted(didn't know stuff gets unvaulted eventually). I bought some colors and a few potatoes (can only farm them in sorties i think?). I kinda really started to like to collect all the stuff. There are several Warframes readily build in my foundry and I have all weapons unlocked you can unlock at my low mastery level, I just don't wanna scrap any of them, I mostly wanted more plat for more slots.

|
I buy plat when I get -75% off. Totes worth it I think. The game is amazing and is free2play, and they don't sell loot boxes or mystery boxes. You pay for what you see. Buying plat also speeds up the game considerably, it's not a pay2win system but pay2grindless. With plat you can straight up buy weapon slots, the much needed yellow/blue potatoes and forma. Also boosters for leveling. Some frames require A LOT of resources to build like Vauban Prime. You buy 1 booster for 30 days for 200 plat and you can safely farm him in that span of time. Later on, when you're MR 24, 25 you can buy yourself some nice rivens for your favourite weapons. Rivens are mods on steroids that you can get only from sorties and a few select quests. I am super happy with my Pyrhana Prime riven and Tiberon Prime riven, also Sybaris Prime :p. Got them for 200-500 plat, rolled them for kuva and got myself real nice end-game weapons now.
The game is really good in coop and I suggest playing it that way. I only solo spy sorties really, and farm cetus wisps solo. Otherwise there really is no point in playing solo. PvP is dead and burried and people brining OP stuff to the same mission as you isn't something that inhibits you in any way.
