Hey guys,
given that smartphones nowadays have more power than desktop computers a couple of years ago and that google pushes the production of tablets that destroy iPads in performance and cost, I would have figured there were at least some decent games out.
What I found so far was disheartening:
1. "free" games either have ads directly visible during gameplay 2. if not, they have really obnoxious ways to try pushing you towards micro-transactions 3. paid games (I pirated some, so I could test them) are never optimized for tablets and controls are clumsy. The games that aren't direct ports (like GTA) are plain terrible 4. the only fun experience I had was playing SNES / GBA games, but the emulator didn't even support gamepads
Now, it seems rather strange to me that large developers haven't offered any ports. Any tablet could handle Diablo 2, Gothic 2, Morrowind, WC3, Wolfenstein etc., so why has no publisher even thought of porting those to Android?
Here's where you come in:
1. have you played any decent games yet? 2. do you reckon playing on Android will ever transcend Angry Birds, i. e. extremely casual 5 minute games? 3. while playing anything on Android, what was most frustrating to you?
Cheers,
k

I have the same problem. Try Andor's Trail. It's the best I've found so far, and it's open source / no ads and such.

I think Ouya will make good games come... Sf4 is actually a good port Still I prefer emulators so ...

Ur-Quan masters, nuff said. The controls aren't as slick as when played with a keyboard.
Also, you can buy a ps3 sixaxis controller and pair it to your machine via bluetooth with the sixaxis program (cant remember name, but search the store for sixaxis and you shall find it.) although this costs a few $\€\£
Also, be sure to get the compatibility program for the sixaxis first to make sure your android is compatible with it. Also, androminion which is basically dominion card game with bots.

I've just been going through the GBA games I never got to play as a kid on my phone it'd be pretty kickass if Morrowind or Oblivion were on Android.

Until something like this becomes standard, I doubt I will ever enjoy smartphone games:
IMO, touchscreen controls just do not work for traditional games. Some people seem to be able to enjoy emulators, but I can't stand the lack of tactile feedback. Even if I had morrowind on my phone, hell, even if I had skyrim, I wouldn't play it because it wouldn't be possible to have decent controls.

The ports of Mushihimesama and Mushihimesama Futari (which they call Bug Princess and Bug Princess 2) as well as some of the DoDonPachi games by Cave are actually pretty good. I wouldn't say I'm great at danmaku games but the controls were surprisingly non-frustrating. I haven't tried the EspGaluda 2 port. Unfortunately these are all iPhone only, although I believe EspGaluda 2 might be available on Android in Japan.
I would gather that you're not asking about that kind of game though.

I would like to second the fact that Shadow Era is an exceptional game with a true free2play model and constant updates/support. I say this because I've been playing it for alittle over a year and am very active in running player tournaments etc on the organized board.

Damn, Cytus looks amazing. And it has the highest average rating i've seen so far. Shame it doesn't work on my galaxy s1.
As for the op: 1) Depends on what you call decent. If your focus is on "epicness" then, no. If all you want from an Android game is to have some fun for a few minutes while waiting for the bus/train or whatever, then there are plenty of fun games. 2) This is strictly tied to 1). Most people play on the smartphone while waiting for something, so there is no time for a complete round of sc2 or dota. Skyrim also isn't as fun if you have to quit after 5 minutes every time. So most developers aim for those casual games. They are downloaded the most and thus generate the most revenue. They are also easier to make because you don't need as much content(as in graphical/audio/story resources). All you need is an idea. Because of the additional inputs compared to normal pcs, these ideas can be very exciting and make for fun games. 3) Most frustrating thing is when these ideas are poorly implemented or swarmed with ads that make the game unplayable.
Vector https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nekki.vector Now this might be something for you. It's basically Mirror's Edge in 2d, ported to android. Instead of using keyboard and mouse, you use swipes for control. Of course it's by far not as complex as Mirror's Edge, mainly because its 2d and you cant stop your character from running, thus the exploration factor is very limited.
My Paper Plane https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wavecade.mypaperplane_x_lite A very simple game. You control your plane by tilting your phone. The control is implemented fairly well and has accurate response. Each round doesn't take very long but gives incentive to replay. This game really lives from the tilt control.

Try UniWar, absolutely excellent turn-based strategy with a thriving competitive ladder and mapmaking community. The one mobile game that I keep coming back to. A few more gems that I can think of - Rebuild, Dungeon Raid, Sword and Sworcery EP, Neuroshima Rex, Devil's Attorney, Where's My Water and Super Hexagon. Hexage (developer) also has a lot of cool, quirky titles that are free if I remember correctly (premium charged for HD versions, easymodes, etc).
There are also quite a few full-blown JRPGs and Nintendo DS ports. Chaos Rings is very solid, there is also an amazing FFT-esque game called Spectral Souls.
Finally, the SNES and GBA emulators are top-notch. ePSXe is a bit hit-and-miss, but I have ran Xenogears successfully without sound, I'm sure that there is a fix for that, just ran out of patience at the time but will revisit later.

Battle for Wesnoth is a turn-based tactical strategy game. Awesome game with PvP and Campaign features.

All I've been playing on my Android lately has been Temple Run 2, Jetpack Joyride, Words w/ Friends, and Ruzzle.

problem with gaming on android is there touch screen so your putting your fingers in way of the screen I have n64 emulator on my Samsung S2 and its shit playing games on it because just fingers in way of screen constantly. I think slow games like a Turn based strategy game would probably be good where don't have to keep fingers on screen at all times would make for good android games

I think adventure games works really nice for touch screen as you can be patient and hover around objects well. I'd say it works just as well as with mouse if your screen is decent sized. Fortunately, ScummVM 'emulator' is pretty nice and bugfree for most of them. I've played through Broken Sword, Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, The Dig, Leisure Suit Larry, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Loom, Discworld, I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream etc. So many amazing games, and for the few ones that doesn't work well (Gabriel Knight for instance) - there's always Dosbox.
