Epic games just announced the next game in the UT franchise, which is going to be completely free and co-developed with the community.
Development on the game is starting today, so there is nothing to show yet. It's going to be developed in the UE4 editor, and the community will have access to the code via Github.
Later on, Epic will open up a marketplace where modders and mappers may upload their content and even sell it, and the revenue will be split between the modders and Epic (this is presumably the business model for this title).
Personally, I am SUPER hyped for this. It's everything I had hoped for: free to play, open for modding and direct community input, and a new and improved engine.
Who cares? Unreal Tournament 3 was garbage and this...

Also not sure what beg means, i thought the community / pros were listened to alot in GO's design, the game is certainly popular and well accepted by most of the CS-community.

...doesn't sound good either.
first big name arena shooter in AGES. ton of people care.
if business model tries to mimic dota 2 then it could get even more interesting.
also if they really invlove the community that much this could be an interesting story to follow just by that alone.
I hope this ends up being good. I have my doubts about anything in the "free" category, but it sounds like they are following the Dota/CS:GO business model of "play the game free, and we sell hats". This is something I can live with as long as the hats don't affect my game. Maybe they will end up selling maps too? Not sure how I feel about that as new maps are the lifeblood of these type of games. I'm cautiously excited.
the "selling maps" approach of CS:GO seems to work well, cheap packs of community made ones. The call of duty approach would kill UT outright lol, it wouldn't work with community mapmakers and things like that anyway.
A while back, I told a friend that I hoped one day to wake up to discover that Valve had purchased the Tribes IP with intent to create a competitive shooter with the same kind of support and monetization available to CS:GO.
Apparently, Epic were driving past in their van that day, heard me say it, and said to themselves, "Well, we don't have Tribes... but you know what we DO have?"
We have been promised a new Unreal Tournament game with CS:GO-style living and ongoing development; built from the ground up with modding (and modder) support using Valve Workshop style monetization from TF2, CS:GO, and Dota 2; that will not only be free to play but in fact COMPLETELY free, forever, with no microtransactions; and is a PC exclusive.
it will be a free game, but they will charge for creating/selling mods you have to pay a subscription to use the editor etc. but whatever HYPUUU
in all seriousness tho, in this era of CoD and paid mtx/dlc where arena shooters are but a distant memory, i really hope they can get this game right as a true successor of the original UT. I fear it will just be completely messed up and bombed, having only a certain mod or 2 become popular at most.

VERY hyped, but tbh it will be hard to dethrone UT 2004/ UT 99 in my heart =)
Also you have to pay to use the editor? How is this supposed to push modders to develop stuff? Source tools are free for example..
I don't think it will dissuade many legit modders, it might stop alot of the "fun" stuff coming through but as for legit maps / mods a subscription (provided it isn't ridiculous) isn't really an issue.
