Maybe some hardcore Pokemon players remember.
In Generation 3 of Pokemon games (ruby, sapphire, emerald), there was an area on the sea, where current was very strong. If you enter the current, you would be dragged all the way to another city. But there was a tiny calm spot somewhere on the current, if you were careful while being dragged, you could see that. By entering the current in a certain way, you could hit that calm spot.
If you dive underwater on that spot, you reach an ancient cave. From there a mysterious story begins
I'm looking for a game that can give me the same thrill when I was discovered that cave. Some discovery, mystery... But not the kind of mystery in most Adventure games, where it is obvious that you should repair a bridge to cross other side, but you don't know to whom you should give that seemingly irrelevant object in your inventory.
Any suggestions?

Myst series ? pretty nice imo

I really hope the next expansion will make the meta a little bit faster again. Since the last patch we see control vs control in most of the games

I know exactly what you mean. It's difficult to find anything similar because the feeling of mystery is kind of circumstantial, because many things have feel right for it to really feel like you're discovering something.
I think what you are looking for are games with little to no handholding and somewhat openworld so you can actually explore. I recommend games like Fallout and Baldur's Gate because it has some of this type of content. If you don't really like the games I don't think that you will find it as thrilling as your encounter in Pokémon though.

Myst series and Riven, I know about them but never actually played. Old games can be fantastic but can be cumbersome at times, because you know...

Tried Oblivion and Fallout 3, didn't like them very much. will try Skyrim on some free time in the future Played Baldur's remake a little, if it was like 5-6 years ago I would gladly enjoy reading lore for hours. But now it seems you only have a couple of hours free time in a day, so playing 1-2 dota or SC2 games and calling the day feels more appealing, unless you are really thrilled about what to come next in the adventure

Divinity : Original Sin.

I recall Arx Fatalis had nice amount of sub-quests, some of which is really hidden.

The Last Express
It's a murder mystery game set on the Orient Express before World War 1. Has a lot of endings, many things you can uncover on multiple play throughs. I think a contender for best game ever made, if you're into graphic adventures.

You should really try the Myst series (and btw, Riven is the second game in the series ). Yes, they are a bit old but I never saw aonther game get close to them.
I would Suggest Myst IV and Riven. (Myst III was also really good)

I really enjoyed L.A. Noire
Made by Rockstar, so it has the GTA feeling to it, but playing as a detective was really fun. I guess it's more of an adventure game, but still very good imo.

Today, i stumbled over a very nice looking mystery adventure. Its release was last week and meta score is at 82. The game looks very promising and isn't that expansive either. I haven't played it yet, but i think i will order it for this weekend.
The Vanishing Of Ethan Carter
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a first-person story-driven mystery game that focuses entirely on exploration and discovery. It contains no combat or explosions of any kind.
Official Website - with a nice scroll feature
also, direct steam link
I'm pretty excited for that, haven't heard of it until today.

You can go with : - Final Fantasy VI (or FFIII in english) - Baldur"s Gate II - Fallout 1/2 - Morrowind - Rudra no hihou (not sure of the orthograph) it's a SNES game squarsoft. All the spells are writtent by and only you. thousands of possibilities. And the story is really nice for an old game. Lots of replayability since you can play 4different characters and plots just cross path so it's really different.
Basicly all Squaresoft old games are like that.
I guess it's the only games i can remember with LOTS of freedom and hidden side quests. But they're all old games
Or if you want to go to Myst / Riven you can even go earlier and try "Lost Eden" (if you know this game... You are OLD)

Two of my favorite games are a bit like that: Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines & Star Control II.
|
OH yes ! i forgot that game. Vampire Bloodlines.
|
Arcanum is kinda like that, would reccomend !

Golden Sun 2 gave me that feeling, strangely. (The first one was very linear, but the second had a lot of random exploration.)
Ultima 8 also had a lot of locales that I would stumble across and think "how would anyone ever find this?"
|
I found Morrowind to be very like that.
