As far as games here are some I like: Fire Emblem The new Zelda Smash Bros(if you don't have a wii) Pokemon - give it a try, it's great fun nowadays. Bravely Default Fantasy Life Professor Layton VS Phoenix Wright(and all similar games for that matter)

When it comes to games Fire Emblem: Awakening is a must have on the system, Bravely Default is also a lot of fun if you enjoy classic JRPG's. I did also pick up a new Pokemon game out of nostalgy reasons but I didn't get much out of that.

you can get all the ace attorney games except for apollo justice(which you can play on emulator if you really want to, and you should if you want to play dual destinies) Pokemon if you're into it. Bravely Default if you like the whole 4 heroes of light original final fantasy JRPG(if you are into JRPGS this is a must have, absolute essential) Legend of Zelda A Link Between Worlds the new smash bros, but I've heard it does a number to your circle pad. as far as handheld goes, 3DS is the best current gen system to me. well as for the device itself, might as well get the latest one when its out, XL version.

I'm also assuming older 3ds games are compatible? edit: but i'm pretty mad because I have wanted a 3DS for a while now. I was going to start playing Pokemon again this summer but I procrastinated in buying a 3DS. Now I have to wait even more

My first game was Fire Emblem Awakening and I do NOT regret it at all. I tried Pokemon but not being a fan of the series I just could not get in to the game.. Story was childish and badly translated at parts. Combat was okay, and I could see how end-game competitiveness could be fun, but I couldn't put up with it long enough to get there. For RPG's, Bravely Default and Shin Megami Tensei 4 are top of the line. Zelda link between worlds is great. and of course, Smash Bros hasnt left my 3ds since I bought it. It actually works decent online, which is amazing. Havent had any problems with circle pad, as long as u use it how its made for (sliding) and not like a GC controller (jerking/pushing) i don't see any potential issues.

Edit: wow a lot of fire emblem recommendations. What is it that makes it so good? Only heard about the series due to smash bros (Marth ftw) never played it

Fire Emblem Awakening is a Turn based Tactics game, much like Final Fantasy Tactics if you've played it, gameplay is amazing, great mechanics and you get even more out of the game if you invest the time into your characters. I've never played a Monster Hunter game before but I'm gonna get MonHun4 when it comes out. also if you for some reason didn't want to get it on PC you can get shovel knight which is my indie GOTY.

And yes definitely go for the XL. I'm not sure why they even make the smaller version to be honest. I guess it's easier to put in your pocket or better for little nerdling fingers, but still... The New 3ds looks pretty awesome. The better 3D effect and C-stick thing are massive upgrades. The only thing I don't like is how the new XL version doesn't have interchangeable faceplates. I guess nitnendo wants to keep them more basic so they can sucker people into buying new shiny special edition XLs every once in a while.

Loved those games back in the days! Also how about monster hunter? Is that just as fun single player? I love the Souls series on ps3 so I'm guessing it's something similar? I would wait for the new monster hunter coming out early next year. It only has local multiplayer in the current one, new one will have online. It's "seomwhat" similar to souls games. Mostly for the combat mechanics where you have to choose your attacks. But its different as well. You dont "explore" and learn a map as much as you will be getting different missions in the same zones w/ some randomization. Biggest variety comes from different enemies. For example, take one of your fav DS bosses. Now think of him with a bunch of enemies that do "charge" attacks (like a rhino charge). Means you have to strafe a lot of those attacks and stay lateral to them while fighting boss. Now switch that to flying guys that move close and poison you. Changes your strat. Now add that this boss willl occasionally run to a different zone MID FIGHT. You won't be finding gear in spots on the map like inDS, but you will get loot off of bosses that will be used in crafting a major weapon. And sorta like DS, if you invest in a weapon you will be able to succeed with it. Mostly boss fights, if you liked them in DS you should like it here. BUt be warned, the game does have a learning curve on tradeskills before it becomes truly addictive. Edit: wow a lot of fire emblem recommendations. What is it that makes it so good? Only heard about the series due to smash bros (Marth ftw) never played it It's actually got a decent RPG style story. The combat mechanics are great. The game is fairly difficult. Lots of progression/stat customization (even if it dont seem as much in the beginning). You build characters and relationships you actually care about. A lot of content. Very replayable. Many characters to get to join you. Fun on harder difficulties if thatas your think (I would NOT start above "normal" though if you are new to the series. It's possible, but you will be spending a lot of time grinding and/or repeating levels, and that's just not fun first time through. Also you really need to make some endgame chars to understand char creation/relationships fully. So it's better to go normal and learn the game then replay later.) Sort of like X-COM if your in to those games, except more story, and instead of "building bases" theres a bit more "RPG" character progression aspects. But the combat and gameplay itself? Right up there with xcom! If I had to pick 2 games every 3ds owner should have, I would pick Fire Emblem and Smash.

Monster Hunter is best enjoyed on the Wii, playing it on the 3DS was always a hassle for me, especially without 2 analog/circle/whatever you call those sticks. Might be better with the new one, though!

Anyway, all three of them are very good. Pokemon is Pokemon, but for me its the first one I've played since Silver so the improvement was staggering. Fire Emblem is basically a must own if you like tactical RPG games like FF tactics, its incredibly solid all round with a really nice story and interaction system. Bravely Default is basically sort of the "next evolution" of turn based single player SquareEnix RPG following from FFX. Whereas FF11 and 14 went off to the MMO crazy, FF12 completely jumped the shark with its battle system and FF13 made it way too easy to just auto your way through battles whilst also only controlling one character the Bravely Default system is a lot more traditional but also a lot smarter than traditional systems and offers some nice tactical flexibility. That being said I'd definitely recommend the XL. The screen is massive and it feels really nice and solid.

I'm a huge fan of Donkey Kong, it's by far the best platform dr in my opinion, and the 3DS title looks amazeballs.

First, there's not even a release date on north american version. All we have is "Sometime in 2015". Second, the price difference shouldn't be that great if you sell it when the one comes out, or trade it towards a new one. Third, 3ds is SUCH a good system, it's almost guaranteed that he will get more than his moneys worth out of the 3ds before the New ones are even released. Just get cartridge titles, rather than downloadables, and your set. Fourth, 3ds games are SOOO cheap for the HUGE amount of playtime you get out of them. Just grabbing Fire Emblem, Bravely Default, Smash, Zelda, and SMT4 alone (maybe Pokemon if your a fan of the series) and you will have MONTHS of game time in front of you... HUNDREDS of hours. Compare that to typical Console games where you spend $60 for 10-20 hours of playtime... Fifth, there's no reason to rush out and get a New 3ds right away, aside from just wanting to. Could just wait until something is released that really needs it, then invest in one. Unless you are REALLY strapped for money, I would just buy it now and resell/get the new one. Price of current XL's probably wont drop much, you will probably only be out maybe $50 (cheaper than a typical game release) and get way more play time than your typical game you spend $50 on.
