Hi all. I'm looking to play some RPG games. The platform I'm mainly looking for is PC. GBA games are OK too, since I can still play it on my iPad/PC. Basically I'm looking more of the final fantasy kind, rather than disable/baldurs gate type. So turn based battles.
I have played golden sun 1 and 2, final fantasy 6, 7 and 8, phantasy star 4, grandia 2...
My requirements are that it should have a good story and preferably good character developments. I didnt complete ff6 cuz i didnt connect with any characters. Too many that it ruined the experience for me. Graphics wise I don't think I can stand ff7-ish graphics anymore. Ff8 maybe is a little bearable. But I'm totally OK with sprites as seen in GBA games. I'm not looking for anymore from ff franchise though.
So yea just shoot them. Also if you have experience in rpgmaker games, I wouldnt mind them too!
[Edit] Actually thanks all for replying. Probably won't be playing any games now since my iPad can't emulate games anymore. Fucking iOS 8.1.....didn't even want to update to it...

if you have 3ds and you loved final fantasy, i would recommend bravely default. The final fantasy game that never happened :D
|
Oh no 3ds. Unless it can be emulated haha

Try LoH: Trails in the Sky. The story starts kind of slow, but it picks up. SC will, hopefully, be out sometime next year.
|
you can also try To the Moon if you're into just story and you want to cry

Get a Snes emu:
Lufia: rise of the sinistrals (Lufia 2 outside of europe me thinks)
PC: Anachronox (patch the shit out of it before playing )

i loved the dragon quest game, i believe i played dragon quest VIII: journey of the cursed king for the ps2. charakter/monster design is mostly done by akira toriyama, so if you love the dragonball mangas/anime, you will feel at home there are other games of that series for gba, ds, wii, ps2 and i even found dragon quest 8 for my smartphone, but i havnt played it yet cause it costs like 20 €..

For a turn based RPG on the PC i would recommend Last Remnant. Decent story and characters and confusing as hell battle system (honestly , the game has a lot of complicated mechanics it doesent explain, reading the wiki is recommended). When (after a hundred hours) your strong enough to take on the enlightend seven , its worth it tho

Fallout 1+2, Planescape: Torment, Baldur's Gate 1+2. Enjoy.
Sorry I read your thread again. I guess you may still enjoy the Fallout games.

Lunar 1 and 2( the complete edition for PS1) I know you're tired of the FF franchise but do play FF4(the original version/PSP version/PC version)
PC:
Star Wars: knights of the old republic 1 & 2(remember to get the restored content mod for 2)
though it might be like a baldurs gate game, please do try it.

Chrono Trigger/Cross and Dragon Warrior III, VIII, IX are all very good (III is my personal favorite). 3DS can be emulated (minus the 3D) and Bravely Default is by far the best of these kinds of games to come out in at least 15 years.
Of the games mentioned above, I have played significant amounts of both Radiant Historia and The Last Remnant and wouldn't personally suggest either one. The former on weak character design, bad level design, and mediocre combat and the latter on insane combat and horrible PC controls.
Oh and also, the Lufia 2 theme has some wicked competition in Bravely Default. It's actually become my 2nd favorite game soundtrack of all time behind Chrono Cross and edging out Trigger and pretty much the entirety of the Final Fantasy series under Uematsu.

Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines (remember to get the unofficial patch instead of regular one, don't install PLUS version on first playthrough). You'll have a blast.
Fallout 1 & 2, KotOR 1 & 2, Planescape: Torment - they were mentioned already, just repeating for emphasis.

He specifically said no Baldur's Gate style games, all of those besides VtM (which is a 3rd person beat-em-up RPG) are Baldur's Gate style games <_<

Can look into Secret of Mana and Secret of Evermore. Don't really recall the story or anything since I played them a lifetime ago, but remember liking them.

Hey all. Thanks for the suggestions. I really appreciate it. Yea I'm not really interested in 3rd person beat em types. Neither am I liking battles that involve positioning, like ff tactics or somewhat trails in the sky. Chrono trigger was actually what triggered (hue hue) this search for RPG, but I disliked the story because of its time travel theme. Never liked time travels haha.
I definitely want the story to be fantasy-ish. So swords axes and magic are welcome, and not some sci fi type. Anyway I will address each suggestion in a later post, since its 3am atm. Haha. I still welcome more suggestions. Thanks again!

VTMB is not beat-em-up... You can get through 90% or more of a game content without involving yourself in any fights. I guess you can skip everything except for some bosses.

try diciples 2, its more strategy than RPG, but it has turn based battle system.
A true turn based RPG without positioning and a crapton of classes and skills and spells and weapons is Wizardry 8, also the other Wizardry games. Although the enemy has positions, just your party doesnt.
There is also this new Might and magic X legacy game, but i havent played it yet.

YA Lufia 2 is a freaking win... and yes playing it before 1 makes a difference but when ull get used to controls in 2 u wont propably be willing to play the first one :D. Chrono Trigger is awesome thats it - played it on DS, and SNES on my phone its just doesnt get boring.
since those were mentioned. ^
Etrian Odyssey? I, II(maybeeee?), III / Havent tried IV not sure if Ill ever try. (Still thanks for reminding that 3ds has been broken) And if ull like EO be sure to try 7th Dragon (DS) its now fully translated but I played it all in japanese :C so no story for me lolololo (beaten the last boss, tried to kill all remaining dragons in order to get to extra dungeon but failed with 6 dragons left... translation (click))
