I've been super busy with my medical education and post-grad interviews and stuff but for the next few months I will have some free time. I'm also looking to justify the purchase of a powerful new laptop - perhaps 3 or 4 really fantastic games.
I enjoy everything from Skyrim to MGS to Mass Effect - pretty open to genre but I'm seeking some particularly outstanding or stunning games from the last couple of years. I'd appreciate some recommendations. Nothing like starcraft or Dota or something where the main attraction is multiplayer.
Thanks and happy holidays.

If you wanna kiss your break away and wonder where the time went, I'd recommend FTL and Civ 5 (Brave New World expansion is a must). Both these games will eat your time away.
|
I totally agree with the above. FTL is great and for years I always find myself coming back to civilization. I would also recommend Total War - Rome 2 or Europa Universalis IV if you are into strategy.
|
I agree to my foreposters, if you have the patience to get into them Civ5 and EU4 are awesome. FTL is awesome anyways but you wont need a new pc for that. Never really warmed up to the Total War games, but a lot of my friends did.
Another time eater is the x-series, played X3:Terran Conflict which is supposedly the best part of the series and had lots of fun. Didnt like the controls in X3 Reunion, so i'd recommend X3 TC and X3 Albion Conflict and not Reunion. I have been told x4 is very buggy. It's a sandbox series with some major issues though including bad tutorials.
I really liked Might and Magic: Heroes VI (Round-based strategy). It's pretty easy to get, the scenario is cool and most of the campaigns have a solid mission design. Actually the first Heroes with characters. I really liked most of the changes they made and most balance changes were good.
Magicka is probably the funniest game you can play on a 4-man lan in terms of coop gameplay.
I would recommend also Borderlands 2 if you havent played it yet. I started BL1 and found it somewhat boring, but the second one is a lot better (and requires zero knowledge about part one).
Cant recommend you great new games I played myself because my PC is freaking old. The people in the thread say that Dragon Age 3 is great, the only friend of mine who played it loved Bioshock 3 and most tests I read agreed. Two friends of mine swear on the witcher 2. Some friends of mine love Diablo 3, but while I had fun i wouldnt say it's great or fundamentally different.

If you are looking for a bit of diversity:
Divinity: Original Sin Age of Wonders III (could sub in endless legend) Crusader Kings II (I couldn't get into this but interesting contrast to the others and highly regarded) Legend of Grimrock I and II
Sure you would enjoy one of those although none will tax the pc. I can't recommend divinity enough its one of the few single player pc games of the last few years now I'm old and easily distracted that has held my interest. Legend Of Grimrock another one where maybe 5 10 hours in you suddenly say to yourself fuck me this is brilliant.
Very much agree CiV 5 is now fantastic. I'm on 700 hours whereas was on like 50 after vanilla. DA3 worth a try and will tax the pc. Baldurs gate enhanced edition remake of one of the best games around still near the top of the list over the last few years which haven't been all that great for my tastes. Witcher 3 and pillars of eternity coming soon although I couldn't get into the witcher 2 which is generally considered to be amazing.

I'll begin with reliable picks:
2014
-Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor
2013
-Bioshock Infinite -Tomb Raider -Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

Thanks a lot for the suggestions guys. I am certainly going to check out all of those titles and pick from them. Would you guys also know some good puzzle game suggestions (like Braid or portal 2 - really liked that) and games with an awesome storyline (like for example god of war and stuff). I think an absorbing storyline in a good game gives the ultimate experience. I'll probably end up picking one strategy game like Civilization and 2/3 games that can be 'finished' like Assassin's Creed or something (I last played AC II - was good from what I can remember).
My laptop is this one right here:
Intel Core i7-4710HQ 2.5GHz (Turbo to 3.5 GHz). •1TB 7200RPM Hard Drive. 16GB RAM. •NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB GDDR5 with Optimus Technology. •3x USB 3.0, 1x HDMI, 1x MiniDisplay. SDXC Card Reader. 802.11 A/B/G/N. Gigabit Ethernet Port. 720P HD Webcam. •15.6" Full HD Display. Aluminum Body ROG Signature Chassis.
Not top of the line but I've been told it's pretty good for most games.

Dragon Age Inquisition Good RPG by the makers of Mass Effect
The Talos Principle Puzzle game with philosophic storyline about roboters
This War of Mine moralic survival game where you play civils and try to survive in a city in the middle of a war, a real anti war game
Wasteland 2 turn-based-rpg with groups in a nuclear desert world like fallout
Quantum Condrunum Puzzlegame like Portal, but with changing the levelstructure (kinda) instead of portals
Walking Dead / Wolfs among us both from Telltale and storyheavy adventures with decisions, which influence the story (kinda)

Theres this game that is making a resurgence in Korea, it is this little game that you may of heard of, it is called BroodWar. I'd recommend this to anyone who has free time.

I've been playing lots of tactics games recently, if you like Final Fantasy Tactics, Fire Emblem, X-COM, and the like, be sure to look up Valkyria Chronicles. If you don't own X-COM already, it's on sale right now on Steam (get the complete pack, the expansion is well worth it). Wasteland 2 also came out more recently and fits that bill quite well, though it does sag a bit in the middle. Shadowrun Returns is slightly older, but the Dragonfall expansion makes it awesome, there's also a ton of community built campaigns with a few good ones in there. The last tactics game I'll recommend is Banner Saga: great art style, good story, tough decisions, but the combat is...love it or hate it. Full explanation in spoiler.
+ Show Spoiler +You have both health and armor: armor reduces the damage you take and health determines both your offensive power and defensive power, so the lower your life, the less useful you are. The turn order is set so that each team goes in alternating fashion. That means the ideal strategy is to get all your opponents to low health rather than kill them, then kill them all at once. Otherwise, if you invest a bunch of damage into killing one, at least one of the other enemies will act twice before you can move, making kiting with archers and less-tanky units impossible. This drags out combat and made it boring for me, but for someone who is a lot more patient, it could be more fun.
If you played WoW in the past, Warlords of Draenor is actually an amazing expansion so far. They've streamlined everything to make it much more easy to get into, but there's still enough nuance to reward skill.
Saint's Row 4 is actually incredibly fun if you like GTA-ish combat and city roaming combined with quite hilarious (mostly in a dirty/juvenile way) dialogue, themes, and missions.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare actually has enough fun stuff added into the multiplayer to make it fun. The maps are a cut above the maps in the last few CoD games and all the new toys are fun to play with.

football simulator 2014 is pretty cheap and very simple. I hate soccer and I've logged 156 hours in the past 2 weeks on this game. It gives you a power trip like you can't understand. and I quote
Essentially it's like snorting coke, crack and injecting heroin simultaniously.
The overall objective of the game is to have a child whom you can groom to be the top star of the footballing world. Earning slave's wages of £300,000 in a week and being forced to play up to 270 minutes of football in a single week. As you sit and destroy your child's body before the age of the 30 due to burnout you may choose to replace him with a regen with whom you feel more affinity because he doesn't cry about being substituted and has you in his favoured personnel.

This War of Mine (try not to read too much about it)
FTL
Bastion
Mirror's Edge, Dishonored
Hotline Miami
Europa Barbarorum if you like the Total War genre.
Portal
|
Valiant Hearts(WW1 based puzzle game)
Metal Gear Rising Revengance(beat em up action game with bad ass metal music and cyborg samurais)
Super Meat Boy(Mario on crack)
Rome:Total War (tied with shogun 2 for best TW game imo)
Rise of Nations (crazy RTS)
that should keep you busy for a bit.

I would guess Unreal Tournament in the more recent iterations.
|
Civilization 4... I clocked over a thousand of hours with it, and I haven't even touched the multiplayer scene.
|
Theres a lot of online FPS games, many of them are free as well. You can search steam for FPS to get a long list and even filter out the multiplayer only ones. Halo has a really unique feel though, nothing comes to mind for something //really// halo-like, but i think the above poster's UT suggestion is pretty good. Idk, planetside 2 maybe? Game seems kind of dead though. Ns2 Combat might be worth looking in to as well.
