I'm starting to feel like rescuing civilians in retaliation missions is pointless.
The aliens kill 1 civilian per turn. If the first alien misses, another takes a shot. An engaged pod will even kill a civilian as a last resort. At least in my games, I haven't seen an engaged pod kill a civilian if another unengaged pod could do it.
Under veteran difficulty, I'm asked to rescue 6 civilians out of 13. I pretty much treat these missions now as kill all aliens in 8 turns.

The campaign of Xcom enemy unknown is worth it story wise and does it have fun and challenging gameplay? Enemy Unknown (and the expansion, Enemy Within) are both very fun. It's not as story based, and you don't need to play it to understand Xcom 2, but it's still a good game if you don't want to spring for the much more expensive sequel yet.

Likewise. Playing on Commander difficulty, I almost always end those missions by default when the last aliens are dead. Easy enough to get at least six that way.

Enemy unknown / within is a great experience. Recommend just playing Within since its literally just an expansion pack that adds / fixes a load of great stuff.
If you've got time on your hands i'd recommend your playthrough be with the long war mod since that makes the game a hell of a lot better too. (Use the Dynamic war option to shorten the time required to complete)
So far from what i can see Xcom 2 has just taken Xcom EU/EW and improved on its flaws and added a bunch of cool features both new & inspired from the long war mod itself.
The most prominent things for me comparing the two are the 1) better maps 2) better unit customisation 3) better base building 4) New units & aliens and 5) weapon options
EU/EW is still definitely worth your time.

The campaign of Xcom enemy unknown is worth it story wise and does it have fun and challenging gameplay? Don't play EU. Just play EW. The campaign is much better with Enemy Within.

Enjoying the game so far, but the armor/weapons tech tree is disappointing. Exactly the same 3-4 weapons as in the first game on all tech tiers, progressive tiers are strictly better. Why can't a projectile weapon be better in certain situations than a plasma? Even the 1994 XCOM had some uses for eariler tech.
Also the forced time pressure mechanic in every mission is getting old.

hooooly shit my nerdy hacker specialist just turned into a Neo with the skullmine, that was brutal

Guys, where do you get your character pools from? Did you import game designers only, or the beta&demos guys too or maybe some external lists?

ok finished my second playthrough on commander, this time with ironman. the game is super awesome but i think i have enough of it for now :D
i think the strategic part still leaves much to be desired and is the only not awesome part of the game, which is a shame because the setting and the way they have implemented it would open up the possibility for more. well i hope some skilled modders will work on that in the next months and years.

I like the time pressure. The game would be a lot easier if I could just creep forwards with Overwatch like in EU. It adds some really tense and exciting moments, like when you have only a few turns left and have to fight through that one last alien pod to get to the extraction point. Just had a moment like that myself, only got out on the very last turn. Thankfully you can still evac after sprinting, otherwise I would have been screwed. There was even a trooper on the evac zone that I took out with a sword attack right before roping out; I like to imagine that the ranger reached down and sliced him up as she was ascending into the skyranger.
And not every mission is timed. Cargo retrieval and blacksite missions don't seem to be, which is a nice change of pace every once in a while.
Unrelated, does difficulty have any effect on the geoscape stuff, like the rate at which the Avatar project increases?

Ballistics -> laser rifles -> heavy plasma
Each tier is objectively better than the last. The only thing laser rifles have on heavy plasma is infinite ammo, and that's pretty minor when you can stuff everyone full of magazines. Throw in rocket launchers to blow things up and stun rods/small launcher to stun things, and you're set for the entire game.
That said, OpenXCOM did a great job of adding some much needed diversity to loadouts.

The campaign of Xcom enemy unknown is worth it story wise and does it have fun and challenging gameplay? Absolutely worth it. The discounts on Enemy Within are so deep, you should get it just so you can learn if you like the games. After all, there's no point buying XCOM 2 if you don't like XCOM 1.
Buy the complete pack so that you get Enemy Within (the expansion) along with Enemy Unknown. It has a lot of bug fixes, and the extra content is really nice. There is no point playing Enemy Unknown since Enemy Within is an enhanced version of Enemy Unknown.

Some, and not necessarily always "harder setting = more". E.g., a facility can add 1-2 Avatar project counter dots on Commander difficulty, but just one on easy, classic and Legendary.

i had a weird bug where nothing happened in world map, my scan wa at -10 and no events fired.

anyone try to evac a mind controlled unit?

mind controlled units get captured if you leave them behind

I had the same bug, I think it's related to the shadow chamber projects, though not sure. Playing Ironman at this point is suicidal, there are still a few odd bugs in the game that can destroy all the progress.
On another note, I'm thinking of installing the workshop mod that disables the timer as long as you are concealed. Doesn't make sense that aliens blow up their stuff when they don't even know you're there.

Okay, now that my sword ranger is major rank, I like him a lot better. He's challenging my snipers for most damage done in missions. Best yet, he got the guardian perk from the specialist tree, which lets him completely trivialize enemy reinforcements. I can literally plant him on the fucking flare and put him in overwatch, and he'll basically singlehandedly kill whatever drops. It's hilarious.

I think the idea is that they saw a huge ass aircraft flying in so they know you are in the area, they are just patrolling around because they don't know specifically where you are. Presumably your shuttles don't have stealth technology.
On a side note I wish Firaxis would make a Fantasy/Medvieval combat version of Xcom like Fire Emblem, it would be great.

last mission sure is a bitch to finish. i saw one of the achievements was to do it in conventional gear, that shit would be really hard

i thought so as well but now after my second playthrough i think it is rather easy if you prepare enough, which means bringing a lot of psi troops. grenades should still be allowed as well so i think about something like 2 grenadiers, 1 medic 3 psi operatives and just vortex - null lance - mindcontrol everyone down.

well u'd have to kill everything really fast and hope that you dont get many of those poison dudes that has 2 lives and the guys who reanimate dead bodies and get really good rng on where the elders jump to. that's a lot of ands. (i assume that its all random tho)
btw any good mods yet?
