Oh i had that, alien was in a tiny storage room that i had to shoot can't remember what blocked the entrance. Another time a floating brain was patroling on the roof.
One time in tftd an alien naded my ship randomly from outside killing everyone inside. Never felt save anymore after that ;_; .
Also prefer the humans are food story, over humans are a cure story. Then again the non Xcom Ufo series had the most unexpected story. (not the free one, the aftermath etc series)
I just got X-Com’ed and couldn't do anything against it... Playing on legendary ironman and getting screwed in this retaliation mission by having 2 Pods stacked on top of each other almost at my starting position (Viper, Shield, Berserker + Muton, Muton, Berserker). The other 2 bugged out or something because both decided to roam and kill civilians, one pod was even killing 2 civilians in one turn, for a total of 3 civs down in one turn. I thought only one pod at a time was supposed to hunt civilians… So far I never had one pod attack multiple civilians in one turn unless they missed their first target.
Failed the mission but killed all aliens and got out with only 2 guys badly wounded so I guess it was a success of some sort, given the fact I am sure that it was unbeatable losing at least 2 civilians each turn right from the beginning. Those retaliation missions tend to be more stressfull, but this was just brutal.

You mean just for the kills and potential drops? Even if it's somehow worth it to just go into a mission, wipe a single alien squad from concealment (aka, play it as safe as possible) and exit, I don't think that's worth your real time investment.

I'm guessing it was a "humanoid" alien that was hiding in my game. It probably panicked because I was winning, dropped its weapon, and just hid somewhere I couldn't find.

It seems like a bug. I haven't played with any of the mods and I remember aliens only killing 1 civilian per turn in the base game. Only time a second or third alien attacks is if the first alien missed like you said.

Just for the kills to level up soldiers yes. Real time investment maybe not, but you are running on a timer ingame and this way you could get some high soldiers pretty quickly before dark events start to ramp up etc.
On a different note im on my first playthrough still on LW2 and im not running ironman to learn stuff etc. Started another 0% supply raid and one of my soldiers started about 10 tiles away from the rest of my group. Moving him in any direction revealed 3 pods at once. This is first turn: Restarting the mission didnt help, everytime one soldier would be alone and trigger pods. So i reloaded a save before the mission and started the mission again, got a different map type and no bug this time. However the pod density was just as high. Just at the starting position i had 3 pods at once, but i managed to pull of this hail mary https://streamable.com/pjsom
OH, theres also this one time prisoners spawned like this

Guessed so since it made the mission rather impossible, I was just thinking if this might be a legendary-thing. I also just had a mission where you have to defend a transmitter. 2 Mutons and a Stunlancer where hugging that thing and almost punching it into oblivion. The weirdest part was that the stunlancer was part of a pod I aggroed and was actively fighting when this crazy guy spent a turn Usain-Bolting out of the fight and straight for the transmitter, even though he had 2 of my soldiers in range.
Up to this point I was playing vanilla as well so either it is due to legendary or indeed it is a bug. I have to say, I really liked the retaliation mission in retrospect though. This utter sense of "this is just unfair" and the realization I won't be able to do anything to rescure those civilians from getting slaughtered... it really fits the theme of the game and advent as cruel occupants.
@Warri: seems like Our XCOm2-experience is similiar : D I am thilled to find out what this game will do to me when I try out LW2

I was the same , but i save scummed like a maniac , so i said "its IRONMAN for me now!!!!" little did i realize how bad i am at the game , and quickly i ran out of troops to send due to many wounds and got behind early , losing the engineer extraction mission to a god damn hidden drone . then i went back to save scumming commander difficulty but only once per mission im allowed to save , i usually mange to keep this house rule but i find it difficult , i wouldve liked the game to allow only a restart mission and no save scumming mode , that will be best for me as i have a weak mentality and i always save before an important rocket or before i break concealment , MY NAME IS BBUK AND I AM A SAVE SCUMMER!
I try every once in a while starting an ironman game, but I inevitably rage quit it a few missions in when I lose a soldier by triggering a pod by going for a flank or when I lose a soldier by getting one shot critted through high cover.
Now that I search for it, there's a mod that gives you back a movement point if you trigger an alien pod, though a comment claims it doesn't work with LW2. Maybe i'll test it out later
One thing I hope Firaxis continues with the expansion is more timed mission types. Thinking back to when I last played vanilla, almost all no-timer missions was not very interesting (only The Lost Towers and the final mission was) because you could just Overwatch turtle your way through the missions
With timers, you have to go outside your comfort zone sometimes, which makes for a lot more interesting gameplay. Firaxis also made strategic resources more scarce in Civ6 compared to 5, and I really like that decision as well

I expect it to be the same, except if they go for the TFTD route as it was somewhat hinted at the ending. To be honest the DLCs had been a dissapointment thus far, but LW2 makes up for it. I am more hyped for Phoenix point, hoping it returns some of the fearful/thrilling atmosphere back rather than the action power fantasy where XCOM had gone at this point (no complain, i enjoy it, but i would like something different this time around).

I agree. As much flak they got for it, it was a changed required to keep the game somewhat thrilling.
