Today we’re launching our Overwatch Wiki.
This new Blizzard game is only in its early beta phase but we’re already seeing notable team organizations picking up rosters and tournaments for the game pop up. So we want to back this game up from the start.
We have filled out most of the rudimentary information but there’s still lots to be done. For example we still need to fill out the heroes abilities with more detailed information, and their passives.
We hope you will help us out to make the Overwatch competitive scene stronger by dedicating a tiny bit of time to fix any mistakes you might encounter, to update pages with new information, to enter in results of tournaments, and more.
If you’re just starting out and have questions or want some help you can find lots of helpful people over in our IRC channel on quakenet. FO-nTTaX also made a great guide to get started with wiki editing.

That's why I feel that this Liquipedia announcement is a ruse to try and get beta keys.

It's so pink! Looking forward to it. Also looking forward to my beta key.
Y'know.

Beta access is something we might get for a few of the contributors since it does make it easier to update the wiki when you can test things out yourself. It's happened before with some of the Blizzard betas. But we don't do wikis to get into betas...
The first tournament in Overwatch is starting today, this is the reason for our launch.

I was just poking fun! I'm excited for it, and it's great to do this from the get-go so we it's not daunting when you want to do a wiki for a game, and there's 5 years of history and thousands of tournament to sift through.

How would you contribute if you were in the beta? (and why is it not possible to gain this information in other ways, like watching streams or reading patch notes or whatever)

Now to wait for my key.... T_T
Totally going to contribute to this if I can, even without a key. I've been watching a ton of streams and keeping up with the news outlets ^_^

Tsk tsk tsk.
That's cool to see a new wiki join the family, though I still have doubts OW will really takeoff as an esports, but oh well, this is contribution-based, so if there's people actually getting into it, the relevance of the wiki will follow the contribution I'd think.
|
|
If you give me a beta key, I will be able to confirm that the beta doesn't work on Mac yet
Apart from that, why pink? Wouldn't it be black and gold?

Well blizzard gave away beta Keys for lotv to some contributers, But only those Who contributet to the sc2 wiki i think. But since overwatch is a New game i don't think we will get Keys that was. But of course i want one

But i have to say i would be more motivated If i had access to the game

I believe this might be useful. I cannot confirm the validity of all of it, but it seems to be correct from what I've played.
Google Sheet Link
I do hope Blizzard eventually adds more detailed tooltips, but for now, I think it'd be nice for it to be organized on the wiki page.

So, there are a lot of people who would normally pay $100 or whatever for a beta key, but cannot due to the way Blizzard has it set up. See below:

A licky-piddy for an unproven game with absolutely no competitive scene yet seems like we're jumping the gun a little

At first I felt the same way, but in the end: - there's already a competitive scene developing, so this is an esport for now (no matter how it does in a few months/year, that's another problem) - if people contribute and maintain it (and LP staff invests time in it) that's their decision - if the game become actually big and relevant, the wiki will be already there, and it's way easier I'd say to launch it now than to do it backwards in a year or two, seeing how organisations don't always have up to date or comprehensive data about their players, their tournaments and whatnot - if the game fades away, then no biggie

There's multiple teams, a lot of players from a lot of FPS games are coming in to overwatch because it does seem to have something for almost all styles of play. So we already see competitive players from TF2, Quake Live, Tribes, Unreal Tournament, Shoot Mania and more come in and play in the beta.
We can assume Blizzard are going to be supporting the esports scene with tournaments like SC2 WCS, HS Road to Blizzcon and the Heroes HWC. At the very least. But first they need to fix a few bugs in the spectator client, and add a competitive mode (both are being worked on as far as I know.
EDIT: Also what Ragnarork said.

I'm not downing the fact TL is supporting Blizzard new game, but why isn't TL making new Liquidpedia page for any new up and coming e-sports? It seems like TL's higher ups are just hard core Blizzard fan bois~~~

Right, CounterStrike, Smash and DotA are Blizzard games. I mean.... Smash...!
Oh and also, what would be the problem with people being Blizzard fans? The community/website originates from a Blizzard game...
@salle: I'm still very doubtful OverWatch will ever be big or relevant (I feel it may very well go down the same road as Shootmania). Just that I think there's not much to say _against_ launching a wiki about this game. ^_^

I was really looking forward to this, but then I saw a lot of gameplay and got really bummed about it. Doesn't look like it's going to be a good game to me.

as someone mostly involved in the dota2 wiki that is a problem every time we try to add an old event or old player retroactively

People who are suspicious of whether or not Overwatch will become an esport - what?
There is absolutely no doubt it'll become an esport. The only question is whether it'll be big or not. Since we have a Heroes of the Storm liquipedia, I don't think it's any stretch of the imagination that Overwatch will eventually deserve one too (no offense Heroes fans). It's a Blizzard game and they'll support it.

Love the pink theme I wish we had that for the dota 2 wiki.
edit: oh lol this was my 12k post

Sweden5553 Posts
Dota 2 was the first one where I sort of redesigned the colour of the wiki, and the feedback I got then from the dota 2 people who was around was that it was too pink, so I moved it a bit more towards yellow, like it is today.

Anything is a sport if people compete at it. And I can understand some pro blizzard feelings around here, but with the amount of hype and articles they have gotten on this site for unproven games, it really wouldn't surprise me that at least few people might be getting their backs scratched.
Hope that SF4/5 wiki shows up sometime soon, listing streams might be nice as well.

So to start a wiki, we need people who want to start a wiki. This group of people can be smaller for a newer game because there's less back info that needs to be filled in to make it an actual resource. So the more history the game has the bigger the group of people need to be to help start it up.
We have a thread in the Liquipedia Contributor forum (where people with Liquipedia Silver coins can talk wiki stuff) for people to talk about what wikis they'd like to see and help contribute to. I don't know if there's been more than one person who talked about FGC in it.
|
Everyone wants a wiki, not everyone wants to start work on a new wiki.
|
Now that I have temporary weekend access, I'm going to try and contribute to the wiki!
|
Is there even something left to do atm? If some liquipedia master could us/me what is there to do, maybe i could help a bit too :D

Sweden5553 Posts
There are a lot of things to do.
The hero articles can be much more detailed. For example we started for some outlining their synergies, counters and what counters them, but we can also use a bit more info like what sort of role does the hero play within a team structure (or roles if multiple.) The heroes passive abilities are also not mentioned, like hanzo's wall climb etc.
We could also use general game concept pages. Like anything from health (with how health works, what different heroes can heal, how much the different healing capsules heal (if this is different or not, and if so have pictures of them) This can then obviously be done by any of the general concepts of the game like damage, armor, hero switching. The different maps also need work, just playing skirmish alone and taking screenshots of the different areas might be a good start. but also talking about the objective points etc.
There's probably a bit to do with the lore of the heroes too.
|
Ok i see, makes sense Not sure if i will be able to do a lot this weekend, but i will try to help for sure! Thanks for the answer
