Given that there are already joypads out for the ipad, what kept nintendo from developing just a separate controller for the ipad and a gamecenter-like app that functions like your profile/gamestore? Games like Oceanhorn show that Zelda would be very possible on a device like this.
This way, Nintendo just does what it did before - confine its market to people who are willing to invest in a device that's only good for Nintendo games. That's not me, unfortunately.
Almost nobody uses the Xbone or PS4 for general-use computing either, so does that mean those two consoles are also just iPads? Except I guess you have to bring your own screen.

Good point. I never said it was an iPad, just that it should be compared to one. While Xbox or PS4 are just simple gaming PC's with dedicated software, this one is just a simple gaming iPad with a external controller (I refuse to believe the Switch can be much more powerful than a twice-as-heavy iPad with similar type processors). There is absolutely nothing wrong with that at all - it's just that it feels silly to me to buy something new that could theoretically be handled by something you already own.
Of course, the exclusives are going to attract a fair share of customers and it's good for Nintendo to keep control over the entire product. I'm just not going to get it only for Breath of the Wild.

It's not "just" a tablet with external controller; it's a completely modular device that supports several controllers used in various ways, with an easy-to-use TV dock. At a lesser price than an iPad.

Hit up Gamestop and changed my preorder. I only wanted the SE Zelda because of the case, but it looked worse in a presentation than it did on the advertising. Swapped it out for this case and this decal/screen protector set and saved a few bucks. Cashier apparently didn't know about those and said "I think I'm gonna do that too when I hit my lunch break."

Sigh. I hate it when people are imprecise like that. obviously the Switch does come with "software", unless I'm literally supposed to flash the OS on it.

Yeah I'm not sure what to make of it. I guess they mean the 'apps' that show on your Wii / Wii U homepage, none of them will be on switch? Though that'd be weird, I can't imagine they drop the whole Mii thing.

You'll have to write the drivers yourself.

yea im not touching this system with a ten foot pole until christmas. They definitely hyped up the base group though, everywhere i've asked has said they sold out instantly the day it was announced basically.

Don't worry, I'm more hyped than I've ever been for any console in 20+ years and I don't plan on getting it until sometime next year. I'm pretty much waiting for a price drop and more games. I'm just kinda cheap like that. This is pretty low on my list of priorities.

Around $2 a month if upper limit

Nice ad. I think it's kind of shitty to advertise games that aren't going to be there at launch without mentioning it though.

Holy shit Breath of the Wild looks amazing. My friend is a big nintendo fan so I'm going to play a joke on him and get him a game and controller or something but not the system. Basically force him to buy it so I can come over and play zelda.

If the dock only consists of an HDMI cable and a charger, is there anything stopping you from hooking up the switch via HDMI without dock?

Oh no, the rumoured switch Price for my country is 488 dolars, around 60% extra of the Price in US. I'm very hyped and wanted to buy it but...it's hard to justify it when a Ps4 or Xbox one S cost 100 dolars less, with a game, which I'm wondering why if those cost the same or more than the switch in the US. Maybe retailers want to abuse the price because it's new?

I think the charger gives draws more power to the swithc than the battery, and thats what makes the switch stop downcloacking. So maybe you could put a usb c to hdmi cable and connect to your TV directly, but it would be with the portable mode performance and not the docked performace. But I'm not really sure, that's just an assumption from what I've seen.
