I finally saw a Switch irl last week and who the fuck is kidding anyone that this thing is portable? Its fucking massive! completely different market, he didnt use it in our 16 hour car ride at all because its impossible to actually play that thing on the go How is it not portable? It takes up less space than a 3ds xl lol. http://thisgengaming.com/2017/01/15/nintendo-switch-tablet-wii-u-tablet-and-3ds-xl-comparison-images-revealed/I use it on the train every day, seen 2-3 others playing it as well. Not sure why your friend couldn't use it in the car.. Only when the 3DSXL is closed. Biggest critique I've seen against the Switch when it comes to portability is that it's too long with the joycon in to fit in most pockets.

Even without the joycons attached it's still a 7-inch tablet. I don't know many people with pockets large enough to hold that. When I take it on the train I carry it in my backpack in a small carrying case I bought for it.

When the Joycon are unattached it's a nonarguement, because at that point it's the same length as an XL. I bought a carrying case that I bring it around in, so it doesn't matter to me.

Yeah I also bought the small carrying bag. I owned a 2DS which also doesn't fit in my pocket so it makes no difference for me. I guess people who walked around with their DS in their pocket will find this less portable. Still confused why you wouldn't be able to play it in a car though, that makes no sense.

The switch is barely portable. Its too big for me anyway to ever use it as a portable. For me its just like any other home console
|
if it can't fit in my pocket, its worthless.
The thing was 4x the size of my original 3DS, I don't have an XL one. The thing spanned across the entire armspace in a crowded 4 person car, the switch was getting into the elbow room of the person next to him. its absolutely massive lol
|
Boy, standards have changed quite a bit. Considering some of the laptops I've seen billed as "portable," hard to believe people are bitching about the switch.
I can keep this thing in my car and play Legend of Zelda any time I'm waiting for something for a few minutes, and I'm not even gonna fuck up some HDD if I move it around while it's on. To my mind, that's portable.
|
The DS form factor has been around for over 10 years. It's not the standards that have changed.
|
My New 3DS XL can fit into my pocket, barely. I don't have the Switch yet but it might not.
|
Just because smaller devices existed before doesn't mean standards haven't changed. Hell, is an iPad portable? Because it definitely isn't a desktop computer.
Just because it isn't the size of a phone doesn't mean it isn't portable. And statements like "if it can't fit in my pocket it's worthless" are just obnoxious and hyperbolic. Neither the Gamecube nor the Switch fit in my pocket, but one of them I can play on a plane.
|
It comes down to what standard you're looking at. When it comes to laptops, you're comparing them to desktops, so they're "portable". When it comes to a console, where the closest equivalent was a WiiU that still had you tied to an outlet and a box with the system in it, the Switch is portable. When it comes to a handheld, which has fit into pockets for the most part, it isn't portable.
So when you decide if you think it's portable or not, it really comes down to if you're looking at the Switch as a console or a handheld.
|
My 3DSXL definitely couldn't fit into my pockets so i was using a carrying case for it It's the same for the switch for me
For me there is zero different between the switch and my 3DS with regards to portability
So for me it's pretty ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ i'll be using it while travelling just like i did my 3DS

We need a word for "portable enough to carry in a case/bag, but not your pocket."
|
the DS Lite was the last really portable gaming system for all that matters
the Vita was barely more portable than the Switch, so it hardly matters, unless it has shield desing chances are you are NOT going to put it in your pocket either way, so its a moot point IMO

How is the normal sized 3DS/New 3DS less portable than the DS Lite?
|
The 3DS was smaller in size than the DS lite, and the new 3DS is still very portable and fits in pockets. Maybe about a quarter of owners of a 3DS prefers this form factor, and it's not trivial. While as a business decision, it may make sense to cater to the largest population, it's certainly a valid criticism to have. I personally won't buy a Switch for portable use because I don't carry a bag with me all the time when I am out, and I have a tendency to leave things on tables.
It's actually quite a mystery why the 3ds LL is so much more popular than the regular 3ds...I didn't think so many people have massive hands that they would be willing to lose portability and worse pixel density.

The 3DSXL did have a higher advertised battery life though most people should recognize that's very much a YMMV thing.

I can't believe we're having a discussion on how portable the Switch is, because that's highly subjective and just a matter of personal preference. I didn't like the 3DS, because of its 3D "gimmick"at first. I own a Switch and I'll definitely get a 2DS, there are just too many games on the 3(/2)DS I've been wanting to check out for a really long time. I mean it's good to have opinions and all, but I think it's way more important to keep an open mind. I don't wanna miss out on something, just because I thought it wasn't for me, life's just way more fun that way.

MK8Deluxe sold more in 1 day in the US than the MK8 did for its first whole week
It also outsold MKWii first day by like 50k, on a console was incredibly popular and being out for at least 18 months already.
About 50% of the Switch owners bought the game on day 1
The Switch is looking better and better for Nintendo by the minute

From what i've played so far i'd say it's well deserved, it's such a fun game.
