I love the original DOOM games, they are, by far, my favorite games ever. I couldn't even get through the 3rd one it was so bad, though. The lighting was just pure shit--it was annoying just to walk around. Hopefully, they can make this one a lot better than the last installment. It seems as though it's going to be hell on earth again.

i dont think doom3 was that bad. i couldnt play it cuz it was too scary -_-
EDIT: Should I try it again? Is the entire body of the game good? Ending is solid, etc? or does it use the same forumla over and over zz?
|
Unlike 99% of the gaming population I absolutely loved Doom 3. The lighting really created a great mood - no game kept me on the edge of my seat quite like Doom 3 did.
I hope they keep the exact same core gameplay from the last one.
(it won't happen)

Will Doom 4 be as boring as Doom 3? I loved the shit out of Doom 1 and 2 - but Doom 3 gameplay can be summed up as 'Walk through familiar dark corridor. Ambushed by demons. Repeat'. Unfortunately, I don't think a throwback to the style of Doom 1 and 2 will ever happen. Still.. I hope it does.

I wasn't a huge Doom 3 fan. It just lacked something in Doom I and II.
|
I liked the first two games (who didn't?) but i was never really a fan of the new scary approach they used in Doom 3, i have nothing against those kind of games but it really didn't fit the doom-theme.
I'd much rather have a more straight up shooter like the earlier games instead of the kind Doom 3 was.

Doom 3 got old really fast, to the point where I didn't finish it. Quake is kind of dead, I would love to see Doom 4 move in and take the spot it filled in the multiplayer world. Been playing Doom since 2nd grade, lol
|
I just played through Ultimate Doom again on Xbox Live Arcade. That shit is brutal and frantic on the second highest difficulty (whatever is below Nightmare). I can't imagine going through on Nightmare...
|
nice. i didnt particularly like doom 3. i never finished it.
i agree in that it should go back towards crazy shooter roots like the first wto

Quake is totally not dead, except if by Quake you mean "Quake 4", in which case, yes, it is dead. Stone dead.

I don't like competitive first person shooters, but the single player ones are really fun to play. I aboslutely loved doom 3, thought it was brilliant, had me jumping in my chair no matter how much I'd come to expect it, didn't have that much fun with an fps since quake 2. Hearing about doom 4 being in production is sweet music to my ears.
|
I didn't mind Doom 3, but by the end it felt like I was going through the motions. Also, I got it through Steam and for some reason my weapon bindings were bugged (and not fixable) such that they were all off by one, and I couldn't select the soul cube. It got kind of hard near the end... :>
+ Show Spoiler +And you can't even damage the Cyber Demon without it -__-

i just want huge open spaces where i can shoot a billion monsters to death, preferably with a co-op mode like D2 (which ruled)

Quake dead REALLY??/
I thought quake 4 was an unforgettable singleplayer experience.

Yes, original Doom is awesome. Even more so with all the excellent custom levels out there. Going back to that kind of gameplay would sure be cool, but I'm not sure if that's feasible with today's need for everything to be as close to photorealistic as possible. It'd be much appreciated if we didn't need supercomputers for every big title.
Doom 3 did have its moments. It should probably have been called something else, though...

OH MY GOD I think I creamed my PANTS
|
Haha this is awesome... I'm excited...
I liked Doom 3 as a single player experience... I think it did a good job at making a FPS play like a movie...
Quake 3 > Quake 4 for competitive esports... I don't know if Doom 4 will even attempt to go in that direction, I think that's what Quake Zero is supposed to do...
We'll see...

Doom 3 wasn't awful, but wasn't great. the gameplay was repetitive, but i'll admit it was scary.
What i wish that they will do in doom 4 is vary the environments more, have more parts with good lighting (because i dont like having to play the whole game with my flashlight out, beating the shit out of everything just so i can see), and have more straight shooting gameplay. some scary is fine, in fact, the sound in some old doom levels are scary as hell. (I refer to the revenant's like, growl shriek that it emits when it's nearby. If you can't see it but it's making that sound, you're like FUCK FUCK FUCK WHERE ARE YOU. Play the final doom levels for a taste of that.)
I'm really excited ^^

Yes. That is why it's dead. :< I wish Quake III had been adopted as the mainstream FPS game instead of Counter-Strike. It's such a good game.
Edit: I also found Doom II to be a better game than Doom III overall, and not just because of lighting woes. It was a different kind of scary. Tension-scary instead of Surprise-scary. You see a key in the middle of an open room and you're unsure of whether anything will happen when you pick it up. You pick it up and nothing seems to happen, so you head back outsi- SURPRISE ASSHOLE THE ENTIRE LEVEL IS NOW FULL OF MONSTERS. The ambient sounds were also creepy as fuck. Nothing like going through a level with the sound of heavy breathing echoing through your ears.
Doom III had nice atmosphere (and an impressive lighting engine, or I guess darkening engine) but everything about it was repetitive. Doom I/II were action FPS games. Doom III was like a horror/suspense game.
You enter a corridor. It is dark and there is a dripping sound. Visible exits are: N >N
You are ambushed by an imp. You are surprised momentarily and then vaporise it with your shotgun.
Repeat for like, 3/4 the game, occasionally substituting 'imp' for 'cacodemon' or other such monstrosities. It had potential, but in the end I feel like it was a letdown.

I actually preferred UT to Q3 tt.
