Life bars being too small, character voices far too annoying/limited (I played a character with only 2 lines, both of which were murder). It also suffers from an issue I see in several newer games, where it becomes a headache for your eyes to constantly pick out the PC's and NPCs from the shiny background. Gears of War had a similar issue, where the grey, metallic background make it a chore to pick out enemies, allies, etc. It might just be me nitpicking, but it is a serious trend amoung groundbreaking games to use good contrast from what you should be seeing to what should be in the background.
Try playing Half-life (Either), Halo, Diablo 2, TF2. The visuals supplement the gameplay perfectly. There's several newer games that don't follow this code and it makes for less enjoyable gameplay.
What's with the blurry icons for the items? They look like random shapes and colors, it makes it really hard to find an item you're familiar with. Why change the experience bar to a radial wheel around the character? Why make the icons for your spells and abilities tiny and make those icons blurry and indescript aswell? There were so many things in Wc3 dota that were so functional that were changed for the worse.
Why make the mobs so much smaller than the heros? Why do they look so weak when they attack when compared to Dota? (Ghouls throwing their whole body into and attack compared to a bipedal grey, undetailed zombie kind-of twisting and batting the enemies with one arm like its a club.)
Call me old fashioned.
Completely and 100% agree. They have made some real nice features in the game, but some of the real basics are so flawed. The graphics at first glance you think are fantastic, but when you start playing, you realise how everything looks so similar.
The item system has some good points, but at its root its so flawed. They have over complicated the item system, by trying to categorizing many items. It does not make sense to have the basic items way down the menu. It just is not intuitive. Putting the items in a order of value comparision to level for example or something like that would work. And whats more is when you do bring up the shop, the item menu is WTF HUUGE compared to the rest of the UI and everything else.

I think the game is pretty fine, but since it is a 1:1 copy of dota it is just boring =(.
|
Game is very messy on first tries. Heroes look all similar, hard to distinguish from creeps too, you don't see shit during big fights.
After a while, it gets better, though.
Shop is fucking irritating on first tries : why the hell would they copy exactly all the items and recipes, yet give them random pics and names? Holy shit that's annoying.
After a while, this gets better too, though...
I think this is just as good / as stupid as DotA. There are still lot of heroes missing (medusa where art thouuuu).

once you hear someone typing and bitching about pressing enter and -ms you know they are indeed trolling. The guy is so hard on about HoN he's nitpicking things about DOTA that pretty much no one else ever complained about.
|
My god. You are still whining? WIll you ever stop crying? How is that saying that seeing the plain movement speed stat in real-time on your character sheet is better than having to type a console-like command each time you want to see it ''bitching''? It's just plain better. Stop raging already, and move on.
Oh yeah, I'm the one trolling and making shit replies like ''no u''.
Good job.

lol this is too easy. I haven't complained once in this thread. Seriously looking at you getting worked up because someone disagrees with you is just el oh el. Stop your bitching plz

anyone gotten the health bars on?
i have to hold down alt then i end up pinging the map -.-
|
How about you stop trolling? All you've contributed in this topic is attacking other people. All you have been doing this whole time is essentially ''lololol u sux if you cant remember recip!!!!!11'' While my point was that the DotA UI has room for improvement, and that is the goal of HoN. Now get out of this topic, I don't even think you've played HoN and you just like to troll. In case you haven't noticed, this is a topic to discuss Heroes of Newerth. So if you have nothing of value to add to the subject of the topic, get out.

For me, it's the tilde key (top of tab key). I have to press it again after re-launching the game though, but it keeps the health bars shown up all game long.
|
for health bars just go to menu > control > toggle in > set key
then u just need to press key 1x at start ^^
|
It's either the comma or semi-colon key to toggle health bars on

anyone has 2 beta keys left they could give to me and a friend please? pm me if you need emails, thx

So, does anyone want to get a clan/team started? My nick on there is Sadist, feel free to add me a buddy (if you aren't beyond terrible of course)

Is this game exactly like Dota? With similar heroes and items?

Yes.
The main thing to take away from HoN I believe is the amazing lag/online features. Everything is done very well and easily manageable. Can easily follow friends into games, etc. It seems very similar to Steam in feel. One of my favorite features is that if a player disconnects from a game they have 5 minutes to reconnect to the game, which is $$. I can only imagine what Blizzard is going to do for Bnet 2.0, but if these guys can do it pretty well, I have high hopes.

Yea the UI is perfectly functional, but it still needs to some work before its really streamlined.
After playing around 15 games I can see that hero balance is going to be another glaring issue like in was in Wc3 beta. Not so much because some heros are miles above the rest, but because some heros are just a step below the bunch.
Exhibit A: Blacksmith
A melee intelligence hero? He better have a sweet nuke or some great grinding/deny/escape moves. But no. He doesn't. His nuke has a 20% chance to cast 4 times over itself at level 16. But the stun doesnt last 4 times as long, hell no, its just 1.5 seconds, on a SINGLE TARGET.
So not only do you have a character that is wildly luck reliant (goodbye tournament play), he also has a stun that is miles below what other characters have, and have as AOEs no less.
And on top of that he's melee.
Then you have heros that are just superior
Exhibit B: Torturer
280 damage, AoE nuke/stun. Low cooldown. 40 per strike AoE random damage spell ~250 dmgAoE nuke with huge range AoE pulse ultimate that does 177 per second at level 16, with master staff (a must).
This guy is beyond belief. You can stun someone with your first nuke, hit them with your follow up direct damage nuke, activate both your AoE pulses, AND attack them normally while this is all happening. After a few seconds, boom, both initial nukes are up again.
And he's a ranged character.
I have no clue how they got through the pen + paper phase of hero balance with things like this going on. Maybe just to get a beta out, I dunno.
The game is fun otherwise, I have yet to find another hero that is as broken as blacksmith, or as sickening as torturer. Did have a fun 25-2 game with him though. Ended up with 7000 gold at one point so I ended up with 2 hearts, a master staff, boots of travel, Vangaurd (Why not?), and a hood of defiance. As you can imagine their team gunned for me, so the vanguard and HoD were very useful.

Is the OgreMagi considered broken or something in DotA? Because IIRC the blacksmith is a copy of him.

Just so you know dude, both those characters are direct cut copies from Dota, the first being Ogre-Magi, the second being Leshrac the Tortured. Not that I'm saying they aren't imba, just that their skills weren't created for HoN, but already existed.

@Rakanishu2
Although I haven't played the game yet, it's just a copy of DoTA apparently. Ogre Magi (or bs in HoN) isn't that bad of a hero, he acts as a ganker and support hero with extremely good hp for being an int hero (i think his strength gain per level is almost equal to his int gain). His multicast can easily turn tables too, you're being chased and you turn around and multi cast to finish off the hero chasing you and he'll be crying that you multi cast too much. He isn't used at all in pro games ...not many heroes are used except for like...~20 out of 81 heroes or so anyways.
As for uhh torturer, he's a pretty decent hero in DotA. But yeah, his 250 aoe nuke thing is stupid it lets him completely dominate lanes if he can get enough mana regen, which is problem for him. His spells cost a good chunk of mana, so you can't really spam so much like you were talking about (unless this is kinda mid-late game and you had a good early game like you did). Also, his stun isnt too hard to dodge either, though I don't really know what it looks like in HoN.
|
Ogermagi is decent if you got a strong Carry in the game which profits from your Bloodlust... And a Multicast on Fireblast really can kill low HP heroes nearly instantly, even in lategame. It also has a very short cooldown which makes it one of the best nukes ingame.
He's not one of the *best* heroes, but he isn't a burden for your team if you play him properly and he fits into your lineup.
Leshrac is strong, but fine... If he gets a free farm he gets pretty ridiculouse in mid/lategame... If not he's nothing to special...
