Razer was kind enough to send me an email concerning their next endeavor: The Razer Naga.
My first impression is that April first is too far away, but at the same time I'm kind of curious to see how it plays out.
What do you guys think about this incredibly over-buttoned mouse?
Click here and scroll down for a nice slide-show gallery of the mouse. I can't get them to embed properly. >.<

For MMOs like WoW, this would be useful, even though I don't play them. And NOT ANOTHER NAGA...

kinda cool, glad im not obsessed with WoW or any mmorpg

Rofl.
That's the saddest shit i've ever seen.

I could see this being convenient for playing diablo without having to use your left hand to hold position, toggle run, using potions, and shifting skills. Not exactly sure the advantages of it, but makes mindless leveling that much more effortless :D

rofl this is the OTHER huge project i was working on
the website is www.getimba.com and there's a bunch of videos featuring my nerd ass talking about the mouse and doing tutorials and shit
most of you dont give no fuck about mmos so you're not gonna care but for those of you that do this shit is amaaaaaazing, i literally only use the keyboard for WASD and alt/shift/ctrl when i play now
and if you think the buttons are gonna be hard to use may i please direct your attention to your mobile phone and how easily you use those buttons because believe me this shit is easy as hell hahahah
|
wow the mouse looks really nice :O

This thing looks like a giant combination lock for a bicycle. :-O
Pretty cool that it has addons for the MMO games.

Hahahaha, I was wondering if that was TL's FakeSteve in the videos...
I watched a couple of them, mouse looks pretty cool! I'll definitely point it out to a few friends of mine who are into MMOs more than me.

I'm a Razer fanboy(death adder represent) but I've got to say I liked Logitec's keyboards more but for SC I just use my good ol' fashion 10$ keyboard

I don't see a way to buy this thing.

How easy is it to differentiate between the side-buttons? As someone that's played a bit of WoW, you don't really want to cast the wrong spell at the wrong time because you pressed a 1 instead of a 4 or something. I'm just asking because, in general, I suck a bit at pressing side mouse buttons, and am only good at pressing the ones with my thumb. So can your thumb find these side buttons quickly with a bit of practise?
Woops, I should read the thread first

I liked FakeSteve's analogy to cellphone buttons. I think with a little learning curve you'd learn where your thumb rests and where to navigate from there. Especially since the whole number-pad is on a curve each button will have a little different shape to it. Impractical for me at the moment, but I have a computer-peripheral fetish, so...
Edit: All speculation of course

yeah dude it's ridiculous how easy it is. there's definitely a bit of a learning curve but i literally never misclick with it. if you're having trouble we threw in some adhesive rubber nubs you can attach to buttons to use as a reference, which come off really easily when you dont need em there anymore
plus if you look at the right side of the mouse, that ledge is deliberate. your ring finger rests there and it gives you a proper grip on the thing while you're moving your thumb around
look: 1234567890-= <-- just typed that using my mouse LOL
buttons 4-6 and 10-12 have ridges on them similar to a phone pad as well, that should help

Another question, does it suit specific mouse grips more than others? I tend to have my palm resting on the mouse, so my hand is quite forward. Would I still be able to reach buttons 7-12 comfortably? I can see this mouse being used for other stuff as well though, perhaps not competitively, but it would make life more comfortable. For example, binding keys 1-3 to 8-0, and 4-6 to F2-F4 could be useful for SC.

Yeah. When I play SC i use a fingertip grip but on this one i just palm it and I can hit all the buttons pretty easily given the shape of the mouse. If you can't reach all the buttons, the interface addon allows you to bind a ton of commands to the first 6 buttons anyway if you're some sort of cripple
and you can actually switch the mouse to duplicate the numpad so some lazy dota players could get some use out of it

Perhaps another stupid question, but I couldn't find the info anywhere. Can you set up profiles with it? Because I'd love to have a desktop profile, with hotkeys for like back and forward, and maybe a few program shortcuts programmed onto it. I assume you can have profiles, but I couldn't find the info.

nope, the mouse currently doesn't have any software on it. for it's actual purpose, it doesnt need it. it's something we'll keep an eye out for demand on, and if necessary it'd be something we'd implement in the form of a firmware update. right now the interface addons we developed can store unlimited profiles, including multiple profiles for a single character. this is a straight-up MMO mouse.
|
If this could work with a game like Starcraft it would be really cool. Maybe not useful competitively, but still really cool. If I played MMOs I would definitely consider buying this.

Ahh ok, that's a bit unfortunate. I mean, the mouse looks brilliant for playing WoW, but I don't really play anymore, and I can still think of tons of other uses for it. Unfortunately most of those would need custom button mappings and profiles. For example, pressing "1" will be mapped to ctrl+alt+1, my global hotkey for my web browser.
Still, for most gaming purposes it would be fine as it is, you can just map rocket launcher to button 5 or whatever.

Valhalla18444 Posts
yeah, in most games the numpad isn't used at all, so you can bind extra commands to it
you may not play wow, but 12 million people do, and it's not the only MMO
|
if you just want a plaisant laser mouse , this one is fine : http://www.cybersnipa.com/us/gaming-mice/stinger-mouse.php
the software is a bit weird, though, so it's only if you're not looking for a you-need-20-fingers mouse, with lots of shortcuts etc...
the look may not please everyone, but it's a good mouse and not too expansive.
edit: I don't know why they show that dumb video on their site...

Don't get me wrong, I think the mouse is absolutely brilliant, for WoW and non-WoW players. I was just thinking about it a bit from a non-gaming perspective. Having 12 bindable keys on your mouse could completely change the way you use your mouse. Another thing I thought about is photoshop. There are so many nice shortcuts that you could then bind to the side of the mouse ("[" and "]" for example). I know Razer specialises in gaming gear, and I love their gaming gear, but I hope they just bring a small add-on to this that makes it similarly useful outside of games as well.
|
That's pretty awesome fakesteve, I didn't know you were working for razer, that's great. I'm not sure I could ever move past my 4 button mouse though. I always made it require effort to play, I cited starcraft as not being able to rebind and people could still be good XD

Oh, and I want to have to bash the paper roll at the top across as a enter key with a satisfying DING noise.
|
Pretty cool but personally I'm fine with using the keys around wasd when I play wow.
Then again reprogramming those buttons to far-away keys so I don't have to have combinations like shift>r and shift>g and control>q etc would be nice.

fakesteve is one sexy beast
Too many buttons imo. Works good I guess for casual gamers who cannot be bothered to rebind keys in order to use them with the keyboard hand. Minus for nonbindable keys. When you said trainers I was visualizing some mini games where you are prompted to press a number on screen. Oh well
Btw Steve what is the all time best selling Razer mouse?

I used to want a mouse like this, a few years back. But since I could never find one I eventually adapted to using a normal two button mouse (ignoring mice with extra buttons). Now that a mouse with the design I've been wanting is finally on the market I really don't care. Maybe someday I'll pick it up and try it out since I've always wanted an easier way to use the numpad + my mouse at the same time.
|
looks like a deathadder +12 buttons

I support you, Steve. <3
Every single Logitech product I've ever owned I hated.
Been through about 5 of their USB headsets. They last me about 6 months.
I have a Logitech webcam that's absolutely terrible, though in all fairness, it was on the cheap end of the spectrum.
And I have a G11 that I dislike more than my generic keyboard I had. I've had problems with keys dislocating, I dislike the key layout, and all the macro keys I have are largely unused. When I bought it (along with a Diamondback that I love), I had wanted to pick up a Tarantula, but none of the stores around here had it, and the G11 was on sale.
As for the Naga, if I still played WoW, I would absolutely buy that mouse. I watched the first half of the video, since it was basically just explaining how to use the mouse, which I don't really need to watch. And it's absolutely amazing. I'm happy I've finally quit WoW, and don't see myself coming back, but if I'm ever to play another MMO, I would absolutely buy that mouse in a heartbeat, even if it was vastly overpriced. As you said, I could literally resort to using my WASD keys, and modifiers.

This might not be so bad for RTS as well, especially for the numbers that are further away from the A button.

Question for Fakesteve:
What is the best razer mouse for a guy with big hands?, i still want it to be quick/responsive though. Think my IE 3.0 has done its job now.. time for a new mouse.
|
Senx: IMHO I think the Deathadder (or its new wireless counterpart, the Mamba), will be pretty close to the IE 3.0. I have both the IE 3.0 and the deathadder, and to me, they are very similar. Very natural feeling for palm grip users (or if you got big hands)
@ cgkrinker: have you ever considered the Das Keyboard? (it's got the metallic "click" you're looking for. It's basically the modern day IBM model M, except a lot sexier)
|
|
It's so nice to finally see a mouse with buttons that can be reached from pretty much any hand position on the mouse. Fakesteve also did an awesome job on those videos
|
Wow! That's actually the only MMO-type mouse that looks usable and useful at all. I don't play MMOs but, still, if looks pretty sweet..
I still swear by my Diamondback 3G though.

DeathAdder, like the other guy said. If you've got the cash and want something badass, get a Mamba, but if you just want a gaming mouse, just pick up a DeathAdder for like a quarter of the price

I'd love free stuff. :3
And that's actually a pretty decent price for the mouse. I paid ~$50 for my Diamondback, and I love it. I'm not even kidding when I say that mouse is making me think about going back to MMOs. How does the mouse feel in the hand, Steve? Is it really bulky/heavy?
|
Valhalla18444 Posts
its actually pretty light, forms to my palm really well and im totally comfortable palming it as someone who fingertip grips every other mouse. that ridge on the right side makes a huge difference, hitting the thumb buttons doesnt feel awkward or anything cuz your ring finger creates like an anchor
|
Ah, good stuff. I'll have to check it out sooner or later. Even if it is tailor made for MMOs, I'm sure it'd still be useful for other games too.

Still, I have to wonder - when using it, don't you end up with your right hand overworked with too much clicking, and your left hand with not enough to do on the keyboard?

in MMO games theres really no need for savage high apm or anything, this is a smoother, more efficient way of playing those games rather than trying to create extra joints in your fingers to hold shfit and hit 6 while holding QW cuz you're strafing because you're fighting some idiot night elf warrior who is mashing his spacebar and spinning himself around

This, or some succesor of it could likely be my next mouse. Hotkeyin numbers into mouse (or F1-F12 for C&C style layouts) would probably make everything a bit faster.
Then again my olde G5 hasn't shown any signs of dying (except for paints wearing off, corossive hand?).
|
Hmm I'll consider buying this for D3.
My comfortable playing position is leaning back with my feet on a chair, while playing with one hand.
Doesn't work too well with SC
My current mouse is really shitty and my fingers ache from squeezing it's small body.

Despite my liking for very simple mice, if I still played WoW I'd probably go for that Naga. I'd still use the keyboard numbers but an extra set of keys is really nice on a mouse.

you should hook up louder when he goes for the DC area lan after wcg

Left click to engage call, right click to disconnect, correct?

Goddamn thats a lot of buttons, I can barely operate the two usual side-buttons on mice, that just looks really awkward too me, I wonder what it's actually useful for, aren't the combined keys of keyboard and mouse enough anymore? :O

hahaha Razer Naga.
I totally read "Razer Nigga" and thought the thread would be about something racial
|
12.... buttonss... on the side alone............. waay too much?
|
I could see this being handy for guild wars... Sweet.
|
It's probably the best way to cram buttons onto a mouse. Only concern I have is gripping the mouse when I wouldn't want to press a button. On one hand they have to be near my thumb, on the other I wouldn't want them under it when I'm not using them

I had a Razer Copperhead for 2 years until it glitched out and stopped working. I replaced it with a Logitech G5 (2nd gen) and it's pretty much the same but a more comfortable shape for my hand.
I am interested in going back to Razer after this mouse dies though, but I am interested in a large handfilling mouse.
Which mouse do you recommend for a better handful, Fakesteve?

Deathadder, which is what I use and it's awesome. I actually changed from a G5 to the DA.

Sorry FakeSteve!!! Lycosa ftw! I'll buy the Lycosa the instant I have the money and the need for it. For now though, laptop. But I assure you that the next piece of gaming equipment I buy will be Razer!!!

this mouse might have serious D3 benefits, and the WoW Pros are ridiculous if i still played this would have helped to no end.
as for FPS and RTS play, ill stick to my death adder ^ ^.
honestly i had a fingertip grip with old mouse, but with death adder i use palm grip most of the time, and it is just as precise, if not more. There is however a ( about 1-2week) learning curve going from 800 DPI to 1800

it does, and we're working with ncsoft to develop an in-game interface for it

Awesome, I'll probably give it a go, my deathadder's button has been dead for awhile, and I need a new mouse.

damn i somehow want that mouse... should be quite exceptional for any hack n slay or mmo and i need a new one anyway. that tribal is kinda ugly though. and the mouse quite expensive.

Would this be applicable for starcraft at all? Because those 7-8-9-0 keys are hard to reach on a keyboard without looking down or some sort of repositioning IMO. As a big fan of razer gear (diamondback mouse, lycosa keyboard[love them]) i would like to see some sort of application for starcraft. I used to play WoW, but then it became a game of pure numbers and no skill so i quit. Also, from reading your posts it sounds like the mouse is extremely easy to use, as well as being extremely light, so from the standpoint of someone who works at razer and i assume gets to test almost everything, how does this mouse stand up to say the deathadder or the daimondback and other mice? And one other thing... i didnt see this on the website, what is the DPI of this mouse?

for the size of my fat thumb, that is like 1 button on the side

The normal version is way better, imo. The grippy rubber on the keys is what makes it!
Steve, you should really tell Razer to make a keyboard bag. Not a laptop bag, i'm not taking my laptop with me. I just want a nice small bag to put my lycosa and deathadder in.

Maybe you can answer this question steve:
I'm actually interested in the mouse as I plan on playing Aion when it comes out, but as far as I know Aion has no mod support and it's highly against the ToS. So the program that allows the key binding would be outside the game or how are you planning to support it.
Also about the keyboards: what exactly is the difference between the Tarantula and Lycosa keyboards.
|
That's just excessive and dumb no need for that many buttons.
|
Just bought this mouse for christmas, going to use it to play WoW.
The mouse itself is a fine piece of hardware, and the configuration software for the OS (I use OS X) is simple and good.
The WoW UI addon that the mouse endorses, however, sucked utter balls in my experience. I'll be sticking to the default Blizzard UI, and using my new Razer Naga with that.

All u people with Razer Keyboards are stupid. Do u not see the keyboards progamers use. $10 wall-mart keyboards are the best kind for games. And mouse, logitech mini optical. Idk how razer isn't bankrupt

The fact that pro gamers use cheap mice/ keyboards doesn't mean that their are not better and more comfortable alternatives.
That being said I don't like most razer products. Mostly because I find them uncomfortable though.

Hey look, it's my thread =)
I've looked at it again in a less skeptical view. Kind of diggin the curves atm.

I can just see ppl getting thumb strain to go with their other repetitive movement disorders...

I have a razer lycosa, main reason cause i love the hand rest and that its practically flat (and completely black, non of that flashy light shit. if you need to look at the keys why buy a gaming keyboard?!?)
I admit I cant really notice the responsiveness etc that razer prides themselves on (except on the mouse, thats a different story) but its a nice keyboard and hell I ran outa things to upgrade on my rig :p
My old logitech elite (with raised keys more like traditional keyboards) feels so clunky and uncomfortable. If progamers want to mash their hands on stuff like that all day good for them. They probably wear em out and get em replaced quite a bit, ntm helps consistency to practice on the standard device as opposed to getting used to a certain keyboard in particular.

I bought the Naga a couple of weeks ago. I use it primarily for my poker hotkeys. As for gaming, I think it's worthless. Using more than mouse4/5 with your thumb is harder than it sounds.

I got this keyboard and a Razer mouse to go with it for christmas...I gotta say that it's probably the best keyboard and mouse that I've ever had. it's so sleek and perfect feeling.
EDIT: and all the blue lighting matches my antec 900's LED's...so it's a badass setup

the buttons on the side seem like they'd get in the way a lot or u'd click one by mistake well trying to do stuff quickly.

Hello One & All,
I have a NAGA question. Can this be used in the following ways: 1. Lord of the rings online? 2. Can the number keys be assigned MACRO's, for use in Stand Alone RPG's?
Or is it only for WOW and the WOW factions?
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks ~~ Gunny

They are just automatically bound to 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0,-,= (1-12 on mouse) So if you bind them, it binds the keys.

It uses mechanical keyswitches. About as clicky as you can get No slide for enter key on that one, though you might check this

EDIT Beyond that, WeMade Fox uses razer mice and keyboards. What the hell are you talking about?

Bumping this to say I just got mine. I waited until they released the 2.00 drivers which turned this from interesting into a really useful mouse. It no longer just sends 1-0 and - and = with the side buttons. You rebind them to any keys you want or even make macros for each. It also allows different profiles so you can have a different keyset for different games or programs and it automatically switches between them. I am very impressed so far.

first thought
too bad razer high end stuff is too shiny for my taste. love my salmosa thou, perfect simplistic design,no shiny iluminated bs. sadly there is no simple keyboard from razer and the best thing that fits my reqs, the steelseries 7g, costs an arm and a leg.
