I prefer neither of them to AVG, Avira technically has better protection but comes up with loads of false positives. Avast's user interface is just retarded imo.

ESET if you can get the patch that resets your 30 day trial or keygen, it's very handy

Never liked Windows Firewall, especially with torrents. NOD32 used to be the best anti-virus out there, probably still the top. Many Slovak, Romanian and Russian companies make very good internet security packages, Bitdefender and Kaspersky is some good ones for commercial use. I remember using Norton packages, it totally eats memory and is terrible. Probably the only reason people bought it was because of the Symantec name. Many reviews say that the new one has gotten rid of most of the problems, but meh.
Malwarebytes MSE SuperAntiSpyware Some Firefox add-ons like NoScript and AdBlock are good.

I vouch for that
Eventho Avira does have a pop up thing going on.. but who cares, it's free. It only shows up maybe once a day. The program's interface is a lot better than avast's imo.

a little question that might fit in here: if i got a very modern fritz box dsl router, is it really necessary to use a software firewall?

There's very little reason to even use a software firewall other than Windows Defender at all anymore. Just make sure that's working and you're good.

AVG is too heavy. It takes everything over on your computer. I don't care for it, personally.
