You can divide "swing" up into a lot of dances, but you can smoothly go between most of them, and you're not limited to any kind of dance throughout the entire song. Depending on your area, different dances will be more popular. I live in the midwest, so I really can give the best opinion on what's popular out here. If you're a beginner, and you're interested in learning to swing dance, the first thing you're going to learn is East Coast swing. East Coast is a fairly easy 6 count step, and provides a good way get used to leading/following, and some of the footwork you'll see in other swing dances. Lindy Hop, at least in the Midwest, is what the pros do...it's kind of the advanced version of East Coast (in reality, East Coast is a dumbed down version of Lindy Hop, but lets not quibble over the details). If you know Lindy Hop, you can go just about anywhere and dance with just about anyone. West Coast Swing evolved from Lindy Hop as a way to adapt the dance to blues and contempary music. I'm not that familiar with it myself (although I'm doing some workshops in it on Saturday, so I'm very excited for that!), but it's an incredible looking dance (I was pleased to see a Ben Morris video on here...he's one of my favorite dancers of all time!). There's some other types of swing as well...shag, charleston, balboa (my personal favorite), but you'll want to get a good grounding in one of the other types before you try to learn these. Some more tips for aspiring dancers: -Dance as often as possible. If you want to take it up as a hobby, you need to be dancing at least once week...in lessons, but socially as well. Personally, I found that dancing consistently twice a week really helped improve my dancing. -Dance with as many people as possible. Swing dancing is a social event! Although I like going with someone I know (so I have company between dances), most people try and dance with everyone attending an event. Dancing with different people helps improve your dancing in general, and prevents you from being accustomed to just one person. -Travel! Swing dancing is a traveling hobby. This goes in hand with above...the more people you can travel with the better. Almost every major city holds at least one swing exchange...a weekend filled with live bands, workshops, and dances. This is my last summer before I graduate university, so I've been at an exchange about once per month. That's kind of the basics for you non-dancers out there. If anyone is in the midwest area, comment or PM me or something, and I'll fill you in on any events I know of, and I'll see if I can find out anything where you are. :D See you guys on the dance floor!

Wikipedia reference if you don't know what it is: here I never danced before in my life, till I went to college this spring. Most schools/colleges will probably have some kind of disorganised dance at their official dances, but at my college practically everyone swing dances. It's very fun, old-fashioned, American, fast dance. There's a plethora of moves that you can string together in any order (along with crazy stuff like aerials and such). I know a bit of eastern swing dance, which is a little more complicated (harder footwork, especially for us guys), but at college dances we usually do our own, simpler kind. Then there's the weekly swing dance club practices, where we usually work on stuff like aerials. Usually in swing you dance with a different partner each song, so you get better dancing with a bunch of different partners. That's how I made most of the friends of mine that are girls at college. Generally you won't see something of quite this level at our usual dances (both of them are pretty good) but here's a vid of a friend of mine in a swing dance competition at my college: Oh, and girls normally tend to enjoy it when guys know how to dance alright, and it's very simple to show a girl the basics of swing, only like 5 minutes before it can look fairly good (maybe 10 minutes to teach a guy, since in this dance the guy's always the leader). Anyone else enjoy swing? I've done a little swing in my teens, and I really liked it. Dancing in general actually. Then I discovered various computer games, and... yeah. Check this out tho, my favourite type of swing. FAST swing! ;D

I've been doing some lindy hop, Charlston and Authentic Solo Jazz dancing for almost 4 years now, practicing and dancing almost every week, competing and attending all major dance camps around the globe. This is as good a hobby as starcraft since it is not only dancing but there is the whole culture + clothing + of course the social aspect. I've met so many really great people from this dance, you cannot believe. So if any of you guys have an opportunity to learn lindy hop and dance every now and then - go for it. It really is fun and the music is great (there are tons of live bands too!) If you want to know more - just ask

I started swing dancing about a year and half ago. One of the better decisions I've made in the past decade. Going to be hosting my first Park dance today if the weather holds out. As well as djing it (first time for that too). Its been a pretty incredible journey, and ironically enough Swing dancing seems to attract a lot of similar people that starcraft attracts lol. no shortage of gamers, nerds, geeks. Quite a few "outcast types" I suspect that is because if you had any preference for our generations dancing, you would be at a club. Just something magical about this old dance, in the same way that starcraft has its own unique magic. If anyone is in the DC are and wants to come out hit me up. Other wise if people are still active in other areas it would be awesome to check out your scene. Ill probably be traveling a bit this year and the next, and its always a blast checking out other scenes. This is one of my favorite jack and jill dances. One day I hope to even be half as good as these people.

My fylleswing (drunk swing, "bugga" in Sweden) which is basically a mix of everything, is still useful for festive nights, though! Hopefully, I will learn it more properly at some point, but I have not seen much swing going on where I live now. Our grandparents got laid in style! I can't believe perrea and twerking will one time become old-fashioned.

@slydie you sure you learned a 4 count? I don't know of any swing dancing that was done in 4 count. Generally we dance to 4/4 music, but most of swing dancing is either 6 count or 8 count. I think perrea and twerking will fall under fads that fade quickly form memory.

It was a version that was called "rural swing", probably invented in some Norwegian village and catching on. I live in a part of the world where couple-dancing is not that big, but if I search well, I might find something!

I did a little research, and the most common swing variants in Norway (folke/bygde swing) and Sweden (bugg) are indeed counted in 4. They are pretty similar. An interresting thing is that the dances are used with almost any music, and in very diffent tempi. Norwegian: Swedish fast Bugg competition:
