Also, whoever says this is racist needs a good punch in the mouth. Apparently everything is racist. "Oh? You don't want illegal immigrants in your country? RACIST!" "Don't like the new health care bill? Think Obama is doing a terrible job as president? RACIST!" As a straight white male I'm offended by the overuse of the words: Hate Crime, Racism, Discrimination, and Affirmative Action.
it's more stereotyping then racist

We actually do not really care, and just keep things the way they are.I know you think every kid in the rest of the world dreams to be an american but...you're wrong.Your attention is focused on american issues, ours is focused on our own.I do not wake up thinking about usa,i do not do it going to sleep either. Anyway my point is,we did not care when usa was #1;we will not either when China will be,there are more important things worldwide.wink wink UN,where being #1 doesnt make you the king of the world(even though you can still stomp over some rules as we saw with the Iraq war).
I know you don't grow up wishing to be American . I completely understand that many countries are not directly affected by America. But let me assure you, America decides more than you think. I assume by your profile that you are from France. Does America's decisions shape France? It doesn't seem so. But the truth is, experts predicted that if the U.S. government did not bail out AIG, France would have been on the verge of bankruptcy (much like what happened to Iceland).
The world's leading economy (and therefore its government in the example above) has far more power and control over other countries than you think. Try and picture France in potential bankruptcy right now if the American government did not proceed with the bailout.

I didn't say the American government is far worse, I said to many people, an American-run world can seem just as frightening as a Chinese-run world. It's all a matter of perspective, and frankly a moot argument because, again, it's very unlikely that China will ever be as, or more, militarily dominant as the US. You just happen to see a Chinese-run world as frightening because you're American, the same way, say, a Pakistani living in a cave might see an American-run world as frightening.
Yes, people complain about many of America's actions (as well they should because we should always strive to make things better), but the clear cut STATS are that America has ruled over the most peaceful, progressive era the world has ever seen. Name one other time in history that can compare on a global scale to the level of peace and the rise in the standard of living for the average person in ANY country over the last 60 years? Answer: this is none.
You can give all the credit to advances in technology and other factors, but the fact is that a world dominated by America has been a much better world to live in than the world of European "balance of power" or any other era.
What a silly argument. You even know yourself that it doesn't work because you bring up technology even as you're making it. Every era of peace and prosperity has been more peaceful and prosperous than the last era of peace and prosperity because they're building on past progress made in technology and social policy, that doesn't mean anything. This is just more silly emotional rhetoric and frankly, kind of a dangerous argument because, yes, we all know what America has done in the past, no one is going to deny that. But what has America done lately to deserve being leader of the free world? To just blindly live in the past and bask in the glory of your nation's past accomplishments is the most dangerous form of nationalism because nations should continue to strive to improve if they want to be the best.
Or, to turn this nonsensical argument on its head, at one time the British Empire ruled over the largest non-contiguous empire the world has ever seen. Trade and wealth were widespread, the New World was being rapidly explored and colonized, and they were even making incremental progress in social policy, such as abolishing slavery. By your logic, since at that time, it was a much better world to live in than any other era, modern-day UK is the best nation on Earth.
Complain about America. Thank America that you have the right to complain. Will you have that right in 60 years if China takes as dominating a role as America had? If they don't start respecting human rights you won't. And you say, "Why should other countries matter? We won't be living in China so it won't affect us." Well, 1) that's a shitty, selfish approach to human rights, and 2) what is to stop China from economically flexing its muscle. It is hard to picture now because it won't happen in the next 10 or 20 years, but eventually if they gain enough power and economic leverage, they will be able to exert their will abroad (yes, as America has, but I see it potentially being far worse given the Chinese government's track record).
Now this is really dangerous territory. Here you're implying that if China has a slightly higher purchasing power than the US in the future, this will somehow lead to me, a person living in the US, being unable to speak my mind on an internet message board. This is not even close to an argument and it's just blind scare tactics. Now, you might actually be right, but it won't be for the reasons you're stating though, which is the really scary part.
Also regarding this comment: "And I thought I told you to stop spewing vapid emotional rhetoric." 1) Who are you to tell me what to type? 2) Are you actually trying to censor anti-Chinese debate? You sound so much like the Chinese government it's hilarious.

There are so many times in this post that you CLEARLY misquote me and distort my words. After reading only a few of these, I stopped reading your post and I simply cannot continue debating with you. You have to respect the rules of debate. Misquoting is just cheating.
One example: you say "slightly higher purchasing power" when I said "if China takes as dominating a role as America had [as the number 1 world power]" <-- implied by context Can you not see how different those are? You are either intentionally trying to falsely win this argument, or you have no understanding of what you are talking about. Either way, this is my last post in this thread.
@Beef Noodles: You maybe right for third world countries, but i can safely speak for EU(the western part at least) and say that no,it doesnt work that way. As for the AIG collapse, the only thing that it did was take away a part of societe generale, far from being the first french bank(more like 4th). French government(also belgian and dutch if i remember correctly) talked about helping it themselves. Btw you thinking that AIG going bankrupt could ruin the french economy shows how little you know about it,despite what"experts" might have said.
I maybe sound a little harsh, but from that post you seem like a genuine guy, that just knows too little about th outside world :o No hard feelings.

No worries . And I was taking it to the extreme. But what is undeniable is that AIG failing would have terrible repercussions (particularly in France, but also all over) that would have had direct affects to the modern French economy. This is a clear example of American politics affecting even a nation as powerful as France.
Also, who is to say how dire the French situation would have been? I didn't say that France would definitely go bankrupt because honestly, economics are far to complex for ANYONE to predict. Hence "experts" being wrong all the time.
Either way, point = American governmental policies affect France.
what i was trying to say is that coutries like France can pretty much take care of themselves(france is just an example here) We could have easily(as far as i know, which isnt as much as the "experts" i guess) bailed out on AIG ourselves.
I get back to my first point, you only have a strong influence on country you're at war(open or not) with. This is not only true from present day us,it is for every country that is the strongest at some point in time. Being the strongest doesnt mean you get to dictate the pace,it means that you're sure noone else gets to dictate yours. With that in mind,us shouldnt be that afraid to loose world's leadership.Current other superpowers arent that affected by us(sure they are to some extent),us wont be that affected by china. It's not because you're not first that your living standards are going to go down, they just wont be the best. The only real trouble is loosing your military world ranking, and we all know that's not going to happen soon for us.
Anti-americanism on: I suppose that's the american spirit,if you aint first youre last. It's not because the guy next to you runs the 100m in 9.5 and you only in 9.8 that you're a fucking snail looser;)
what i was trying to say is that coutries like France can pretty much take care of themselves(france is just an example here)
This isn't true in any practical sense. A couple of countries have tried isolationism, and it ends up quite disastrous. For example, North Korea.
We could have easily(as far as i know, which isnt as much as the "experts" i guess) bailed out on AIG ourselves.
I don't know about France, but I do know that German and Swiss banks held more in liabilities than those countries' respective GDP's. In other words, there would have been nothing they could do if AIG imploded, counterparties to the CDS's began demanding their payment, and the ensuing lack of capital amongst European banks caused massive bank runs. If you don't think France would have been affected by this, you don't know how the modern economy works.
I suppose that's the american spirit,if you aint first youre last.
This is true. I wish American egos weren't so sensitive about being #1. The simple fact is that China and India are going to become bigger economies within the next century because of the sheer demographic differences. There is nothing the US can or should do about it.

The last time the U.S. paid off the debt, it did so with seignorage.
Btw, where did you pull those numbers out of your ass from?
Here's what actually happens in your example.
The country has debt of Y, windfall of X, and Gov't Revenue of Z. They have interest of 1%. Let's suppose they commit
Thus their debt is measured by Y2=(1.01)Y- nZ where n is some percentage.
If nZ = 0.01Y, then they are making interest payments. If it is higher, then they are making interest payments and principal payments. If it's lower, then they get to borrow more.
The idea that a country can never pay off it's debt is ridiculous, because it's happened before.

Realistically, China won't surpass the U.S. economically and in terms of political power, for at least a hundred if not several hundred years. China's current growth isn't sustainable, and the government is aware of this. They'll have to transition into a market economy driven by internal demand within the next few decades, which is going to be accompanied by a drastic reduction on the rate of there economic growth, if they do so successfully. If the transition is unsuccessful, it could be catastrophic for the world economy.
This is the other side of the naivety coin.

It would be unrealistic to suggest twenty years, let alone several hundred.
edit: you used figures from 2009 america fucked really up since than :D
Our gross debt is also lower. Our gross debt is lower than just the public debt of most European countries (and Japan). America has lower debt of all types, relative to GDP, than most European countries.
2010 is not over yet, kinda hard to use figures for 2010 with out them being estimates.

Shut the fuck up about racism, darn it! Shut the fuck up! Racism is when blacks were forced to sit in the backs of buses, forced to drink from "colored" waterfountains and eat at "colored" restaurants. Racism is when the Irish came over here and were treated like trash. That's fucking racism. Get it straight, dammit for God's sake!
This cry of racism every time someone says something that you don't fucking like is disgusting. Like when Juan Williams (who is black, liberal, and a civil rights activist) was fired from NPR because he said he feels uncomfortable near someone wearing Muslim garb on a plane! Someone says something you dislike and you cry out "racism".
looooooooooooool how is that not blatantly racist?
It's not a good reaction to have... but it's not racism.
I feel uncomfortable walking passed a man on the street at night and he is carrying a big axe. He is legally entitled to do that, and I am unfairly jumping to the conclusion that he is an axe murderer, but that's not racist... Now replace the street with a plane and the axe with a turban. Still an unfair jump to a conclusion, but still not an example of racism
Ok I know the thread has moved past this, but seriously... how did no one pick up on this?
You're equating carrying around an axe on the street to wearing Muslim garb or a turban. So that is to say, wearing Muslim garb is akin to carrying a weapon?
The mere fact that the garb itself causes one to be fearful is indicative of that person's underlying adherence to racial stereotyping.
I'm not saying that we don't normally do these things in benign ways, but being mindful of our unfair stereotyping is useful. Fearing Muslim garb is irrational.
It's fear of culture that people are decrying as racist, not fear itself.
This is why people are calling this ad racist. This commercial has racist undertones, in that it preys on an irrational fear of Chinese economic prosperity... as if that's gonna result in a Apple-style "1984" future.
That's religious not racial. Not liking islam is not racist, it's religious discrimination. Racism and sexism are wrong because they are not something some one can control. Discriminating based on beliefs is not the same as discriminating based on race of sex. If I see some one wearing a kkk outfit, I will think they are a bigot.
I am not justifying discrimination against islam, although I am not overly fond of it, but it's not racism nor innately wrong to dislike some ones beliefs.

2010 GDP China: 5.1 trillion (current annual rate)
14 years. This assumes China keeps its high growth rate, which I find unlikely, consistently for the next 14 years and that the American economy stays weak for the next 14 years.
Again though, it's not unrealistic to state either way. Economic forcasts are rarely right decades in advance.
