I would love to live in Australia. When I was in high school we had a couple australian exchange students and I absolutely loved them. I am still friends with one of them who came back here this last summer! He flew all the way back here to Finland just to meet me and my friends. He thought it was so cold back here even it was +25 celsius here.
I want to go to Australia becouse I think its the best country in the world for me at the moment.
And now to the question:
Where would you like to stay at? Except for South Korea of cource..
Obviously the United States, because we have this little thing called FREEDOM, which the rest of the world doesn't have. Freedom fries, freedom tacos, we have all kinds of freedom. We have so much freedom, in fact, that we're trying to give some of it to the Middle East right now. USA! USA! USA!
Everything is pretty cheap there, especially the food. Although there are no good residental houses in Korea, I can manage to live in a good apartment as most apartments in korea are almost the same size of average homes in the US. [4~5 bedroom 2 washrooms] Alot of mountains to hike around, and 24/7 bars all around the corner.

You sir convinced me :D
But seriously. New Zealand would be the country for me. Everything's so relaxed and work doesn't dictate their life. Also I like the cultural diversity.

haahahah
I'd rather stay in Sweden, having four seasons and all.
Australia or Canada if the opportunity arises would be Japa
Australia and Canada = looks like a great place to start a family and somewhere that all the people are "almost disciplined". Also, if the it comes to the weather Australia
Ideally - would go for Canada. Not so ideally - anywhere else but where I am right now.
Canada gets a lot of flak for cold weather and hockey, but I don't give a damn about the sport and I adore colder weather. Besides, they got medical marijuana there ! :D It's surely a win-win situation for me there - cold weather and weed FTW
England. I like rainy weather, pub food, and I won't have to learn a new language.
I've always wanted to try yorkshire pudding but don't know where I would find it here. Also something called "ploughman's lunch" that someone told me was really good when they went to England. Seems like a neat little meal.

rofl, good one.
I've been thinking about this a lot, and I think I'd either choose Singapore, or if I had to live in America, I'd choose Hawaii.
Singapore, although it has really strict laws etc., seems like quite the nice place with the best living standards in Asia atm from what I read. Plus, everyone speaks English so that's a nice plus. If Canada or the Scandinavian countries weren't so cold I wouldn't mind living in those places either, but they are so... >_>
When I went to Australia, it just seemed like a generally fine place. Weather was fine (though pretty hot for my taste), the people seemed generally nice, and the accent is awesome (Melbourne).
Other than enjoying Canada, I haven't visited much of anywhere to have some kind of opinion. If I went off places I want to travel, and things I've heard from other people, I'd probably live in Japan, Italy, or Australia.
On February 06 2011 12:53 eviltomahawk wrote: Canada for the cheap healthcare and the easy access to the US. Also the maple syrup. It's so similar to the US, yet it does some things better.
Any of the Scandinavian countries would also be nice simply because everything is so well-run over there.
Healthcare here is so cheap that you only up to 50% your income will be taxed. GL HF
I'd stay in URBAN Canada though, though I'd like it to be where California is geographically.
I see some people like some "features" of other countries, but don't know how their economical and politic work.
example: Canada has great healthcare, but we pay a minimum 15% of our income as taxes if you work at McDonald and if you have higher income you pay more than 15%.
(is USA that free hmmm.... i don't know, body scan at the airport, those that say anything) I don't believe there's a place on earth where there's real freedom.

I didn't like that post. I don't know what Freedom Taco(e)s are.
The standard of living over there is extremely high, the weather is awesome (I love the cold), and some of my favorite death metal bands are from Sweden.

having lived in #11 and now living in #1... I'd say #4 (Australia). When I worked nights I raided (WoW) with an aussi/kiwi guild (Vegemite) and now playing sc2 with some people from there and they seem like very cool people all around.
I honestly have no idea where I want to live. There's not a single place that truly appeals to me -- so in the end i'll probably end up staying in America somewhere.
I would definitely choose Australia, I think I would love the climate there and OH MY GOD I love Australian girls accents. I just melt whenever they talk. ;P
Already in Australia (go to Sydney if you like it hot and Melbourne if you like it cool, the rest are pretty shit) which would be my number 1 anyway. I would choose somewhere in Scandinavia if it wasn't for the language barrier, though I could probably pick up german I already speak a little. Canada probs 2nd most reasonable english speaking country. I don't want to live in a country that may teach creationism to my future kids or has no universal healthcare or a horrible national reputation so America is out. I don't want to live in a country that is ruled by a monarch so Britain is out.

Yes taxes are higher in countries that are highly socialized. But the health care cost per person paid by the government is about half of what you'd pay in a country like the USA which has privatized health care. The people themselves barely pay anything.
That said, Sweden, Denmark and Germany are all places I'd prefer to live. That language barrier would suck to get around though.
I would totally live in Sweden, given the opportunity. Relatively well-run, good economy, health care, and social norms, awesome music. Plus I adore cold weather, and I think the language is sweet. And they've got a great gaming scene!
Plus, Jinro hails from there, so clearly they've got something good going on.
The weather: Having grown up in middle-of-nowhere Michigan, USA, I'm accustomed to snow and cold, and I significantly prefer cold to hot given a choice in extremes. The language: English is the primary language in all major provinces save Quebec, so I need not switch my primary language in order to adjust and live comfortably; only a handful of other countries meet this criteria, at the forefront being England(a good consideration), Australia (too censored and expensive with relation to gaming) and New Zealand(a country I have heard very little about). The location: It's on the same continent as my current location, as opposed to overseas (see abovementioned: UK/AU/NZ). I'm not crystal clear on why, but this is a sentimental bonus for me that is fairly significant. The people: Reputedly above average in politeness and pleasantness. The politics: It's really hard to top the USA for extremism in politics, and Canada certainly doesn't. That's a plus in my book.
Serbia, because Belgrade's an awesome city. I wouldn't want to work there though, I'd like to have a holiday house in Belgrade that I could go to whenever I feel like having an amazing time.
Japan, the MMA scene over there is simply amazing and the fans can't be beat anywhere in the world. Also where else can you go that has indoor snowparks across the street from indoor beaches? If my career takes off I would love to fight over there and afterward hit the slopes for a few hours before relaxing beach side.
Well Western in Europe in general does sound wonderful. Health care, education, living conditions, and food/wine sounds good from what I hear but I am most likely misinformed. But the taxes are really high from what I hear but healthcare and other services make up for it greatly. And although most people say Europe's politics are shitty for the most part, no one can be worse than America (Japan is the exception)
For vacation, Japan sounds like the best. Food, Akihabara, the music scene, and e-sports are the major attraction for me.
I would, though, be happy to live abroad for a couple years or so. My wife will probably get her post-doctoral position overseas, likely in Geneva or Melbourne. I'm down for either locale, personally.
The best case scenario for long-term settlement, however, is Tennessee. Clarksville, TN to be exact. Not a finer city on the planet, ladies and gentlemen!
Some English speaking country, so Canada, England, Australia, or New Zealand, and USA if there isn't a Republican government at the time.
If I have the chance I'd just travel a lot though, and not like one week vacations to resorts, I mean like actually seeing the country and it's nature.
I'd like to live in Spain because it seems like a nice place and I already know the language. I also would like being in the warmer climate and near the ocean.
And I don't really know enough about other countries to make the decision to move over... Hell, I don't really know enough about Germany to begin with x_x
Only stuff that comes to mind is:
Korea, they have starcraft there! And electronic toilets! Ireland, I'm half irish and I like their beer! Japan, CRAAAAAAZY stuff happens there, also Nintendo!

Uh, she's the Queen of Australia and Canada too, and is ruler of Britain in name only.
I love Canada, and it's a really great place to start a family up and going. But the bandwidth cap sucks, hope its gone soon . I'd probably move to the US somewhere if I was offered a good paying job somewhere warm, if not i'd stick to Canada.
Other than just staying in Melbourne probably the south of France. Speak a fair bit of the language, like the food and culture and its a relatively warm climate near the beach. Second choice would probably be an asian country like Singapore or Japan, just to experience an entirely different culture.

I want to vomit out of disgust when I hear an Australian female with a noticeable accent. Wanna swap? Actually my current girlfriend lived a large portion of her life in canada, so she ahs a neutral accent. Its pretty cool.
I would love to live in France or Scandinavian Europe. But the UK would be nice too.
The south pole...alone...on an iceberg...in a hut...satellite broadband...playing games...hahah!
No I wouldn't live live in any other country as much as I wish I could live in every country and explore the world, you know I doubt anyone would want to permanently live in the same country for the rest of their lives unless they'd have to when the reasons for doing that would become obsolete over time.
Governments, society, family, opportunities, your interests are all bound to change no matter what country you'd want to live in if that's what the contemporary desire to live somewhere else is based on.
Canada or Finland. Canada because i have been there before and I loved the place. Finland because pretty much all my ancestors are Finnish and I would like to visit the country.

No, absolutely not! There isn't a single country in the world that comes close to our level of freedom! Other countries try to lure Americans away because they're jealous of how free we are. I would like some insight on why Americans are so gullible as to take creationism seriously. In the words of the joker "why so religious?".
I would live there out of curiosity, but never raise children there. In a place as complacent and oppressive of freedom of expression as America.

In what way does America oppress freedom of expression?
USA would be my first choice for emigration. Similar enough to here, and once my university is done it offers a lot of prospects for those willing to work for it.
Other than that I guess Germany or Scandinavia(minus Finland), then the other Western Euro nations and Australia.
Man....this is a tough one...I love living in the US, but I think South Korea or Japan would be amazing. If not I would love to live in Australia and or New Zealand. Such beautiful countries.
i'd like to stay in New Zealand, only downside is you can earn more in some other countries and our internet isn't very good compared to other 1st world countries.
Honestly.... I love living in the United States but there are many countries I'd like to visit/live in.
I've heard nothing but good things about Norway.... food can be an acquired taste (just what I've heard so this is just hearsay) but I have a friend from there who says that the people are great to be around and that it is just a great place to be even though it's a touch expensive.
France would be a nice place to live. Again it's kind of expensive but I've been there twice and enjoyed it both times immensely.
Other countries to visit: Japan, South Korea, China, Germany, Vietnam, St. Vincent & the Grenadines among others.
I live in Malaysia, and its plagued by some political/racial instability,so i would like to leave this country sometime, also it has the worst internet ever, lol.the countries i would want to go would be: USA Singapore SK Britain(i can watch football live lol) Maybe France or Italy

Being an american its really hard to find any place that really even meets up to my standards but out of the handful of places iv gone for vacation id have to say england. I just loved it there when i went for a few weeks and really enjoyed the underground (subway) with how everything is connecting so anything is just a brisk walk away. I could see myself just exploring every weekend enjoying the countryside small old towns or booming london. Plus just hearing them talk for me being someone with zero accent is just hilarious, its kinda like the commercials for pillsbury dough boy were the child pokes him in the chest and giggles uncontrollably. I mean people give southern people and especially louisiana a hard time for butchering the english language but with them its so bad i cant control myself its almost cute how bad it is.
Other then that just how old/history there is almost around every corner there i have a feeling people there dont realize how lucky they are to live around such things. Just in my area were i live now we have a maybe the main strip for the city with some original buildings that's "old" and wow that's like 50-100 years old!
I have lived in Sweden, China and America, at least one year in each. I must say, China is the best out of these three; maybe I think so because I enjoy a lot of 'foreigner privilege' but I love it here.
I would love to move on to another asian country (S.Korea or Japan) but Mandarin ties me to China.
DENMARK! why? welfare state suits my beliefs well ( id be called a communist in the US if I moved there el oh el). awesome weather (i cant handle when its above 25 degrees) you cant get more then 75 kilometres away from the nearest beach ~ hawt girls

well, not quite sure, but i guess, it depends on how life goes.
if i become father, i guess i'll pick a country where my child gets the best education, sweden, finland. perhaps staying in germany, well lets see how it turns here, would be nice as our healthcare is pretty sick good. if it continues like now, i'll go wherever the job wants me to go. I'm not really focused on myself in this decision.

We had 30 degree celcius in some parts of Sweden last summer. (IIRC, anyways, it was really hot.)
We have all 4 seasons.
I'm happy in Sweden. I'm originally from Finland and I'd be happy there aswell. (The 2 countries are very similiar, atleast in my experience.)
If I wanted to move out, I'd move to a country with a different culture. So most likely an Asian country like Japan/South Korea/China.
Belgium while i'm still young enough to drink a lot, then move to Finland or Norway when i have kids, finally retiring to somewhere in Ireland, probably Co Donegal.

i will return to MD, great jobs, nice people, ok weather (snow fffffffuuuuuu) but i loved my area, it was diverse and everyone was friendly
To everyone hesitating to live in any of the Scandinavian countries because of the language it really shouldn't be an issue at this point. most swedes at least speak perfectly fine English. In fact many English people I meet who have lived here for a long time still speak mainly English. Even if they already understand Swedish they can often make themselves better understood in English :p
If I had to chose a different country (I'm pretty happy here!) I'd choose something like Japan or South Korea just for the special culture. I think I would have to learn the language in any of those countries though ^^
Definitely south korea. Last time i went there in Gr. 9 i think, it was great eating samguypsal, naengmyun, going to pc bangs, going on mountain hikes like every other day, etc. I'm korean born+raised in canada, but I felt more at home in korea than in my years in canada o_o
Im reasonably happy where I am but if i had to change it would be to denmark, sweden or czech republic, mainly because all 3 are so progressive in terms of society

Beautiful country Full of mountains, forests and lakes. I love hiking, skiing, fishing, rock climbing, caving, mountaineering, so hooray. And as for you.
You just need to come on over here to Athens, GA. We'll go downtown my treat and enjoy some cornbread, some fried chicken, and some collard greens. Then we'll score some fine bourbon (or Dixie beer if you'd prefer), cavort with the belles along Broad St., and just generally revel in the fact that it's February and all we have to wear right now is a jacket (even though up North those poor bastard Yankees are under a foot of snow).
The South is a glorious place, my friend! You just have to embrace it!
USA. From my experience and that of my friends the people there tend to be very friendly and self-confident (obviously depending on where exactly I end up, but I don't know enough to specify this). This is most likely true for other countries as well, but I just so happen to speak only english and german.
germany of course because it's great place to live ,lot of different styles of nature, the language is awesome and doesnt sound shitty like french or italian, we have uncapped internet no matter where you live exept the rural countryside, and the people are nice when you get used to the more blunt way of speaking here

lol, if USA would be as awesome as you say, why does Cuba beat USA in life length expectancy and in education?
If USA would be like Canada, I'd love to live there. But atm Canada is a litle too cold for my ideal country and USA is (for my taste) a litle too conservative. I would love to see Japan/Korea/australia once, but my ideal place to live would be a small town in south france, at the coast of the atlantic ocean, with not that much tourists. And every day I would sit in a lovely small cafe trinking wine, looking at the sea and write my books.
USA, land of the free and home of the fucking brave. Our hobbies include killing shit, eating red meat, and burning barrels of diesel fuel. We fuck shit up then ask questions. PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN. READY, FIRE, AIM. If you don't love america then you're clearly a communist and need to be taken out back and shot.
I like living here but I think Canada would be a nice place to go to. With the nature, culture and climate. The people in Australia are awesome but I can't stand heat Maybe I should look up New Zealand.
So I can teach scuba diving all day then train muay thai at night and play starcraft, all while living on a tropical island. Also get fresh and healthy meals for about $1-2 and get massages for a couple of dollars.
I'd love to spend some time living in some other countries but I couldn't be happier having grown up in the USA. I live in suburban Chicago which is excellent. Don't have to deal with the traffic and loudness of living the city life but if I want to pay a visit to one of the best cities in the world it is just a 20 minute drive away. The education in my area is among the best in the country as well. It is also great to grow up around a very diverse group of people, I'd hate to head off to college and meet people from certain ethnic groups for the first time. And the weather, same thing, I experienced the heavy snowfalls in the winter to the scorching summers from a young age, ready for anything.
After I graduate college in May I want to spend some time in South America though, I majored in Spanish. I've already been to Spain and South American countries are just cheaper in general which would be what I am looking for straight out of college.
I'll spend 2 months in China this summer, and 6 months in the USA next year. I'm super pumped for that! Maybe I'll like on of these countries so mutch that I'll stay. I could also imagine living in New Zealand, looks like a really nice place to me.
Bavaria is nice for the moment, but japan and those northern countrys like sweden sound nice too. But then i travel to france then only on tank chains. :-)

Definitely stay in the UK its the best place for music and aspiring artists, maybe the Netherlands for obvious reasons, USA third choice because apparently my accent plays over there. And finally Australia because BBQ land beats all other cuisine.

Why is Japan so popular? I also want to move to Japan, but I dont know why. I imagine it has very nice nature (outside the cities), awesome culture and technology, but this is just what I believe it is, I have no facts what so ever.
And people saying Norway or sweden, you got to understand how extremely crap these countries are. Norway a little worse then Sweden, but its basically the same shit. Norway has so many laws, and you cant do shit here. Police in Norway is a joke, nobody in their right mind have respect for them, and its cause they have to uphold stupid laws like 4000dollar fine if you are caught with a whore. Simple stupid shit like that. You think Norway has awesome nature and rivers ? Lolol, we rape our rivers, and our Fjord is raped by cruiseships dumping their waste in it. And since we have raped all the rivers, the Fjord cant clean it self, it just stays there. The crabs in our Fjord, have green legs lol, like a freaking baneling cause of all the toxic waste is being pumped in it from ships. Norwegians are the most cold hearted solitary humans I have ever witnessed, we can only competently be social when we are extremely drunk. At busses, we sit as far away from people as possible. Also we dont care about our parents, family life in Norway is actually looked down upon, its the age of single mother and single people now.. To bad you cant and wont get a loan to buy a place if you are single. Our social system is a nightmare, its like they picked retards for the job, who has no clue. Oh, our social system and healtcare (which is in the newspaper often for its incompetence) only costs about 50%+ effective tax.
Welcome to Norway.. Cant wait till Im economically fit to get out of this shithole.
Sweden Italy (i was everywhere but not in Rome ) Spain Russia South Korea Tibet Hawaii
I already saw big part of Italy, Czech R., Croatia and England. Its funny cause i saw more of England than Slovakia even i was there just for 3 weeks :D
I am perfectly happy in the Netherlands. We aren't as socialistic as scandinavia ( luckily ) and we aren't very right wing either ( moderation is the key ! ) I like the culture I even like things like Rembrandt!!! And I am only 17 haha. I love it that we are in general very direct and tolerant and we got pretty girls the mix between south europe and north europe a lot of models actually come from the Netherlands for this reason.

Canada probs 2nd most reasonable english speaking country. I don't want to live in a country that may teach creationism to my future kids or has no universal healthcare or a horrible national reputation so America is out. I don't want to live in a country that is ruled by a monarch so Britain is out.
I would like some insight on why Americans are so gullible as to take creationism seriously. In the words of the joker "why so religious?".
I would live there out of curiosity, but never raise children there. In a place as complacent and oppressive of freedom of expression as America.
In what way does America oppress freedom of expression?
Not in a way that is particularly harsh in comparison to some countries. But in comparison to Scandinavian countries It seems like Social pressure and general ignorance about political ideas makes it difficult to express and honest opinion. Persecution of atheists would be an example of social pressure keeping mouths shut and pens unused. I have heard its pretty bad. And seen some very bigoted mainstream news. I live in Australia so I only have data, American media, and second hand anecdotes to go on.

As for where I would move if politicians finally fucked up everything around here. Southern, Central France maybe beacuse of how beautiful it is there. Canada because it is again beautiful country that is reasonably managed. Germany because it is well run and culturally close. China for some time because it is awesome

Well you should understand that all countries satisfy your reasons for why Norway sucks. It is just that other countries suck in those regards much more (most of them).
Beautiful country Full of mountains, forests and lakes. I love hiking, skiing, fishing, rock climbing, caving, mountaineering, so hooray. Also has a decent welfare system (I like the safety net, just in case my employers go bust and I struggle to find another job) and I don't care in the slightest how high the taxes are. I don't care about extravagance
It's also a big country, with a relatively small population. I despise crowded places, and big cities. I'm also more suited for colder climates. I go crazy in prolonged periods of hot weather.
agreed. id want to live at svalbard.
I am kinda drawn towards the arctic and north, I don't know why, so living for some time in Longyearbyen would be cool. But I don't really like to live in a place which is so dependent on trade to maintain their living conditions. No vegetables, no fruits and not even wood... If I had to stay in the place for the rest of my life with no coming back I'd chose New Zealand.
If i wasnt living in southkorea id live to live in my homecountry Southafrica for a bit i think it would be cool apart from well all the fucking killing
I wouldn't want to live any other place than Norway unless I had unlimited money
If money and welfare wasn't an issue, I think I'd pick France for the sake of infinite castles, wineyards, food culture and other interesting stuff I could spend my life enjoying. Also great climate for anything from skiing to summer sports depending on where you live.
If I was a social people's person, I'd go for Germany instead.

Well I guess it's critisizing on a high level... Bureaucracy is an issue (but less than in the EU), you have a big difference in taxes depending on where you live, healthcare gets more expensive every year. living is pretty expensive and you'll have trouble to find a flat in the cities. You'll only find a job immidiately if you have an academic degree (we're lacking teachers, engineers and doctors). We have a lot of foreigners, about 25%, (from Germany, France, Italy and mainly the Balkan states) causing the society to get more conservative.
We only have one major swiss TV-station, everything else is German TV. Freedom of speech is fully granted, which of course is a double-edged sword. We have one big Boulevard-Journal, the Blick. It's similar to the Bild, Kronenzeitung, the Sun, but less Boulevardish. The other big ones like Tagesanzeiger, Mittellandzeitung and Neue Zürcher Zeitung are rational and in my opinion good journals.
edit: But if you find a good job, you'll be paid very well, you have the German, Italian and French culture in one country with all the food, wine, cheese etc. of them, you have direct democracy and more or less good politicians.
I would love to live in Canada actually, i can't really put my finger on it but there are so many things that i like about Canada, beautiful nature, beautiful cities and overall just seems like a great place to live
I'm sure that I could do well in America. Taxes are low, the opportunities are great and freedom of speech is guaranteed. There's no freedom of speech or freedom or proprietary rights in Iceland. The state can take everything from you in the blink of an eye.
I'd like to live in a upper-middle class white neighborhood in America. I'd collect guns, just because I can and I'd have BBQs. If I had to pick a state I would probably pick Virginia.
When one has almost 70% tax each month, yet only making $8,000 each month, then it's getting too far.
Technology, amazing food, great sophisticated people, one's religion doesn't matter to anybody, good lifestyle and I would be able to understand anime without translation.
I would love to live in Japan again. But if the original question is asking for a new country, it would be, well, not a country, but Hong Kong. That or South Korea. I am a master student focusing on proliferation in East Asia, so those parts of the world would be lovely.
Australia hands down, I'm hoping by the time I finish my Cisco course and get some experience over here that it will be enough for immigration to Aus, just wish my dad would have emigrated years ago when he had the chance ;__;

Let me chip in a conditional vote for Russia; lived there a total of about three years, and loved it:
-Cheap to live (if you live outside Moscow/St. Pete, which I did) with surprisingly good, inexpensive health services. When I lived there, all my vices (cigs, booze, bread, books, black market CDs and tech) were actively and heavily subsidized. Taxes very reasonable. -Wonderfully hospitable people -A true division into town and country without the hyperdeveloped suburban sprawl that afflicts the coasts in this country -Absolutely no political correctness -Beautiful women -Rich culture not yet completely dominated by Internet/TV/film...the printed word is not yet dead.
Why conditional?
-Massive federal and regional bureaucracies complicate life in as many ways as possible -The police: omnipresent and corrupt, for the most part -The courts: no redress, no due process...a 99% rate of conviction in criminal cases. And you do not want to wind up in a Russian jail. Only redeeming feature of complete lack of faith in the courts is that Russian society is much less litigious than American society -You might work six months and not be paid -Entrenched racism/xenophobia, which did not affect me much, 'cause I'm white -Bad roads/infrastructure...things are falling apart and they're not being fixed
Easy to see Russia as a place that doesn't have its shit together. It isn't convenient, it isn't stable, it isn't affluent. But it isn't petty, complacent, or absolutely fixated on the material to the same extent as American culture. Which I like. All in all, I'd say it's a good place to live while you're young and single...not so good if you want a stable place to live and work and bring up kids. If some of those things toward the bottom started to change, though, I'd seriously consider moving back.

Thank you for your reply. I only have a bachelor degree in computer programming, the good thing is that the language is mostly english in that field, but still, I need to talk to colleagues etc. How well does the population speak english? I feel very attracted to Switzerland now, seems like a good place to start if I want to relocate. I feel moving to Japan might be too big a step to take in the beginning. Also do you know if your country is strict on allowing new people in?
As a med student, a scandinavic country. I'd just hate it so much when it gets dark so early in the winter, I would be all depressed. Hailing from the sunspoiled southwest (as sun-spoiled as germany gets =) ), I didn't even like Berlin in the winter (too dark) so I probably just stay where I am, though if I had to leave, some city at the southernmost tip of Scandinavia, like Malmö, Göteborg, Stockholm or Oslo. I would have to learn the language though, but I think that would be pretty easy with me already speaking German and English (both are very similar to swedish).

i lol'd at the "only". it's absolutely fine Everyone had atleast 4 years of english in their 9 years of obligatory school. nowadays they get 6 or even 8 years starting at the age of 8, depending on where you live. i'd say everyone under 30 speaks atleast basic english. i'm 20 years old, had english classes since 9 years and i still have english classes at my University. Everyone is allowed to move in, the question is how long you'll be able to stay if you have a job and came from a EU/Schengen state it is unlimited if i remember correctly. you can read more about it at http://www.swissemigration.ch/index.html?lang=en
United States of America. Kuz it fits my personality. COULD be SIGNIFICANTLY happier, and HELPING others become SIGNIFICANTLY happier, but isn't. Fuck yeah. I hope we reform eventually... or just fuckin' take over the world and force feed people freedom until they forget about their former lack of it... MUAHHAHAHHAA
America.. You have the freedom to starve to death or let the unfortunate do it if your rich, you let the sick die almost without any support.. Wonderful. And guess what, if your born into a poor family in a poor area, you have no chance of anything whatsoever, and the rich don't have to worry about you :D
Man, we certainly have different ideas of freedom.

English is fine in most academic jobs. i know alot of foreign people who work in international companies and only speak english. but if you'd like to make friends and socialize after some time, you need to learn the language spoken in your region. this would most likely be german, preferably swiss-german (yes it's a language, not only a dialect. but it is pretty similar to german), french or italian.

Switzerland would be a good guess. It is very much like Northern Italy but without Silvio. I have tons of relatives and friends (both Swiss and not) and they all like it quite a bit. Not very exotic though.
But the UK is a pretty good pick as well, I have to say. I like it here.

I would say New Zealand, australia or south korea. Because i like australia since i was there in 1999 and new zealand has some amazing nature to explore (lotr <3)
but i really like south korea for all the kindness, people, healthy culture, sports and nature. After all this i got to say i like it here in little Denmark in lower scandinavia, the welfare is great, maybe a little too cold for a long time but overall i like my small country, not too much world influence and control. It's great in scandinavia. And the healthcare here defintely plays a great role too, which makes me any scandinavian country a preference for me.

Well, even though Sweden is pretty baller and I'm perfectly fine staying here, there are a few places I'd consider moving to:
Japan. I've always been a fan of Japan and it's culture, and even though I'm aware of a lot of possible downsides with living there (especially as a foreigner), it's still attractive to me. Spain. I don't know, just always been attracted to the countryside there. Plus I already know some spanish. South Korea. Do I even need to explain? China. Interesting country. Got some downsides, but I'm not completely sure they outweigh the upsides. Russia. Unsure about it, but I wouldn't say no if I had the opportunity. I do know that russians seem to like me though. And I've even been mistaken to be russian a few times, so blending in wouldn't be a problem. xD
When it comes to language barriers - Personally I've always had it easy with new languages, and if you move somewhere you can easily get the hang of it after a month if you try. Not really concerned about that. More concerned about culture barriers though, but that's inevitable...

You couldn't be more wrong, unless you're thinking of the Deep South, widely regarded as the worst region of the country(from what I learned in US history, it always has been). I think that the sources you're using do a fair amount of cherry picking. The rest of the US may be less socialist than Europe, but no such oppression exists. A good half of my friends are atheist, and honestly, no one really cares that much.

I went to Russia and stayed with my family for a few weeks. The quality of life is not that great over there, though I do like the subway system and the infrastructure in general. Though even though I speak Russian, I never really thought of the people there as particularly friendly(unless they wanted me to buy something of course). But if you ever go there, stay away from the police as much as you can.
Costa Rica -- I absolutely love the weather over here, it's perfect imo. The weather usually stayed around mid 70s year long. Beside the weather, one thing that attracted me is their women. What can I say? you just can't resist the Latin women. Also, prostitution is legal over here so I don't have to worry about jail time if I do it.

I approve this one, great points !
I read somewhere that Denmark is the only country where life expectancy went down with an increase in wealthiness. That is what I call enjoying life.
Austria near the alpes - Or switzerland.. I love the countryside in that area, one of the most beautiful in the world. Also, I really like austrian people, they seem really nice.
Have a little cabbin on top of a mountain with a big lake on it that reflects the sky perfectly in calm weather. Chop wood with an axe and stock up for the winter =)
I like the current situation in Sweden but if something would go realy wrong then my first alternative country to move to would be Canada. I'm not that fond of the cold weather but I think the politics and the political climate is much better than in most other countries.
England is a pretty good country as well but the looks of the women there don't fit my taste.
lol I love how like half of you pick Sweden, but barely anyone picks Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands or Belgium. It's like Sweden stands for everything that's good about Europe for Americans. :p

Denmark is much better then sweden and norway, not sure why people pick sweden at all, I guess it must be morrow or something. Sweden has god awful politics, not that I know that much about it, this is what people from sweden has said on TL (f.ex the man that was forced to work while he had cancer.. he died and it was all over the news). Bunch of morons running the welfare system, taxing its citizen hard and long.
Denmark got some of the best hospitals, they care for people, hell, Denmark give disabled people whores so that they also can enjoy life.
My family is from Italy. They came here waay back through Staten Island. Id like to go there. I actually have an italian last name thats been americanized. Part of my family actually switched back to our Italian last name.
I've got a few places that seem obvious to me. Being danish it would be too easy to say herpa derp Norway (lol same language (bokmål and danish are 99% the same) higher living standards) - or even sweden since it's basicly the same.
Netherlands seem really appealing for alot of reason. And as many ppl mentioned Canada / Japan / SK or Australia are high up on the list aswell. Y NO USA?!? Well, I've been the US for a few months travelling with my GF visitting my aunt in Boston and her cousin in NY. Magnificent sights and everything... But horrible politics and living standards compared to other pieces of the western world. Really America... Really...

The % of girls being natural blonde in order: 1: Iceland 2: Norway 3: Denmark 4: Finland 5: Sweden
Your argument is invalid
Btw, Denmark's got loads of stuff. First off - we've got a team in the final 16 in Champions League. Norway, Sweden, Netherlands, Belgium - we're you? We've got tons of international companies with great history (Mærsk, LEGO etc.), we've got a brewing culture as fine as any with Carlsberg, Tuborg and Ceres being the most known I guess. We've got the most popular monarchy in the entire world. We've got the oldest national flag in the entire world. We f*cking own Greenland. We've got cultural history featuring H.C Andersen and other great writers. Medicon Valley is stationed partly in Denmark pumping TONS of money into science and medicine. Niels Bohr (the rival/partner) of Albert Einstein was danish.
I could do this for hours... But I reckon that's not what this thread is about. But really... Dont say we've got nothing.

What makes you think Norway has better living standards then Denmark? Its the opposite. If you have healthissues in Norway, you cant trust the slow ass system, you either save up (or take a loan) and take the trip to Denmarks high standard hospitals, or let the horrible system Norway has take care of you. Denmark is often brought up in Norway cause its so awesome in so many ways compared to Norway.
I seem bitter at my country for sure, but its nothing special here. We pay way too much to have "high" living standards. Our system simply does not work that well. If we want to be treated well, we need to find it somewhere else then the "welfare" system we have.

Actually. I went to Oslo just last monday And I went to a danish hospital today. *Yey* relevanse... Sure we've got f*cking FREE healthcare no matter what. We're being paid to take educations - rather than paying for it. So yeah, that's awesome. But we've got a huuuge debt 'cuz of the financual crisis AND we're dealing with a ton more immigrants than I immagine Norway is.
Anyway... Norway managed to drink our Foreigner Minister (not sure if this is the correct name in english) so drunk he actually accepted to hand over like 90% of the northsea oil to Norway.... wp norway... wp...
Brazil. Hot woman, awesome parties, drugs, and as long as u have money u can just pay the cops off! Plus theres tons of awesome places in brazil. Like the Amazon, Rio, Sao Paulo, and a LOT of coastline
I live in the greatest place in the world. So why do I remain so restless?
I suspect that many of us mistake the pleasures of curiosity for the pleasures of consummation.
We see children perpetually running from place to place, to hunt out something new: they catch with great eagerness, and with very little choice, at whatever comes before them; their attention is engaged by everything, because everything has, in that stage of life, the charm of novelty to recommend it. But as those things, which engage us merely by their novelty, cannot attach us for any length of time, curiosity is the most superficial of all the affections; it changes its object perpetually, it has an appetite which is very sharp, but very easily satisfied; and it has always an appearance of giddiness, restlessness, and anxiety. Curiosity, from its nature, is a very active principle; it quickly runs over the greatest part of its objects, and soon exhausts the variety which is commonly to be met with in nature; the same things make frequent returns, and they return with less and less of any agreeable effect. In short, the occurrences of life, by the time we come to know it a little, would be incapable of affecting the mind with any other sensations than those of loathing and weariness, if many things were not adapted to affect the mind by means of other powers besides novelty in them, and of other passions besides curiosity in ourselves.
I would like to live on the Côte d'Azur, preffarably in Nice. Warm weather, awesome french food/culture/society, you have the beach close by, and like a 20 minute drive up to go skiing.

I'd like to live in Switzerland because we have this little thing called REAL democracy with more than two parties and federalism and stuff, you know all this small things...
And we got 4 Seasons a time and beautiful women and I live there!
Aus isnt all that good at the moment if ping was always <50 and the plans were a little better no matter where you were in the country, id move further south for decent weather (it always gets called good by people who dont understand 45 degree summer and NEVER snowing :/), and then never consider moving again also, two party democracy sucks
I've always wanted to live in France even though I can't speak a word of the language. the food is so good and there's so much history all over that I think it would be awesome. I wouldn't stay in Paris or any other city though, only out in the countryside in some small, old down.

Well yea theres a lot of trannys, but thats because of how cheap the plastic surgery is there. Hence why a majority of the women have nice knockers lol. but i have a couple friends there, and my gf's family lives there too. Plus her brother's best friend is a part of the SWAT, so the law is on my side lol
I have considered, and still am somewhat considering, a move to The Netherlands. I like the cozy feel of the towns there, and all the people I've met from there seem really open and cool.

Africans, Muslims and eastern europeans are meant when you talk about immigration problems. Noone cares about asians, Americans or western europeans they blend in perfectly.

Oh why do you amuse me so much. Have you ever been to the Immermannstr. in Düsseldorf? The japanese there don't "blend in" or are "integrated". They have their own shops, school, temple there and some of the people there can't speak any german either. Yet nobody sees that as a problem.
what you want to say is that you just have your preconceived notion that we are overrun by turks and russians who just suck out our welfare system. Man I fucking hate to see right populism is growing in germany again. You'd think people would learn but it only takes about 2 generations to un-learn apparently.

Then enlighten me why your country are so awesome, instead all you swedish guys have only just said "swedens awesome", "4 seasons ftw". Im not talking about sex trafficing laws, we allready had the pimp law, but the police didnt give a rats ass about pimps, so they had this brilliant idea (this includes your country too) that we should just let the police handle the men instead (giving fines to men), hoping stupidly that would fix the problem, when in fact now, we have 2 times more women from others countries in slavery and the russian guys are laughing their ass off at Norway. This law was made so that the streets would look pretty, how extremely selfish of them. Fact is, we make these shortsighted laws all the time, in a worse manner then sweden in many cases (we are not allowed to use snow mobile lol).
I've lived in Singapore (10) years, New York (2), and Tokyo (6).
I have family in California and I've spent a couple of summers there before. I love the state but US taxes and the whole Californian bankruptcy issue is a turn off. Being able to order things online and not pay a small fortune for shipping would be awesome though.

Canada is cool, but I enjoy using the Internet the way it's meant to be used (the Swedish way!) and the climate is just as bad as over here. Sweden but with a geographical position closer to the Mediterranean and the cuisine of Italy would be the absolute best! :D

I'm belgian, studied and/or worked in Italy, France, UK and Sweden and, of all of them, Sweden is 100% what I'd go for again and again. Stockholm is a gorgeous city, most people are IT-educated and speak english, swedish girls are jaw dropping (matter of taste I suppose but works for me), you pay high taxes but things actually work (in Belgium, you sometimes wonder what you pay them for), people are polite and helpful (getting rare these days in some places in western Europe), world class norwegian landscapes are only a few hours drive away (the lowlands of Belgium are so flat and boring - and crowded - it's almost depressing), they have 4 seasons - not just rain then rain then rain then sunnnno, rain - the way it's meant to be and swedish midnight sun in the summer is something you never forget, food is more than decent. It's a very free country that has a lot of social rules so if you wanna be free to do what you want all the time, you'll probably feel its a bit oppressing but if you can enjoy that, it's an amazing place. Italy = great but the way they work is a bit hard to adapt to if you're Belgian so I'd save it for holidays France = same as above + it's not that exotic for us walloons ;d I'd love to try and live in Japan - never been there but will do someday hopefully.
Everything that I've heard about Sweden makes me want to live there. I love America, but Sweden sounds like that is the place where it's at. Neutrality FTW?

Hahaha.
I would say Finland although I would get dead depressed there. Just fascinated by this country and its landscapes.
I think it also depends what the thread intends by "live"....live for a few years or settle forever ? I think -as a foreigner - most European countries are nice to live in for a few years and feel in an "exotic" place but if you plan to settle for good, you'll never entirely feel at home in any of them as most have deep roots in their own history, traditions, culture, language etc that it would take more than a lifetime to assimilate in most cases. Maybe some big cities are exceptions to that (Paris ? London ?) but that's a slightly different discussion. From that point of view, USA (and Canada) seem to make it easier for newcomers to integrate since they've been doing this forever (or that's the way it seems to be, haven't been there to check it out). Loooooong discussions ahead.

But seriously. New Zealand would be the country for me. Everything's so relaxed and work doesn't dictate their life. Also I like the cultural diversity.

Man, I'm so not into traveling that going to graduate school in Georgia or Illinois seems terrifying (Woo...New York. All I'll really miss is the pizza). If I had to live in a country, I'd at least try out Italy, as it's the only other country with a language I can speak. Dude, spending a few days in a Paris suburb wasn't really a pleasant experience, but I don't say that France as a whole is that way.
Hmm, if I have to choose I would probably choose England or Australia, as they both speak English and I wouldn't want to live with ignorant Americans. But tbh I'm happy in Scotland
Wouldn't wanna live anywhere but where I was born, raised and still live. The Netherlands. If I had to choose somewhere else it'd be denmark or sweden.

- Australia has crazy Internet censorship laws. If the Internet isn't free, I'll try my luck elsewhere
- Asia and Africa are interesting continents, with rich traditions and history. It's a different way of life because of the poverty. The fact that so much of the youth is trying to flee to Europe for a better life is sad because they are needed at home to pull the country up. Regardless, if you can land a good job I'm sure any country in the region would be a joy to live in.
- South America is the most interesting alternative right now. A continent where the countries are siding with the people against the corporations. The economy is on the rise, governments are taking control of natural resources and peoples spirits seem to be good. A lot of the countries have recognized Palestine as a state - which should be applauded and more countries should follow suit. (Violence of any kind should be condemned and the Israeli people should hold their politicians accountable and try to live in peace with the Palestinians)
umm I woundn't say that people in east asia are clamoring to move to europe.
public healthcare and other welfare programs that europeans are fortunate to have will not run with americans. There is a stigma against any kind of socialism here.
You've just see Sweden for yourself. I personally didn't like the insanely high crime rates, muslims, extreme feminism and the endless dilution of Swedish culture via media promoting multiculturalism. Anti-semitism seems to be rampant in some cities too, like Malmo.
Sweden is my dream country too. Could you tell us more about these problems?

I don't know exactly why, but this made me laugh really hard. haha
Well I've been in a somewhat interesting situation. I grew up in Canada but I'm both a citizen of Canada and the US so I've had my choice to make over the years. Personally I really don't like the cold weather where I am in Canada but I feel like there's a lot of other benefits to keep me here.
One thing I haven't been able to completely understand reading through some of this thread is the sentiment that people don't like the US foreign policies therefore don't want to live there. I understand you might not want to be associated with a country doing things you don't approve of... But that's all it is really, a pretty loose association. In truth, if most people in the states weren't informed of these things through the news it would never affect their life. I don't feel like it would have any bearing on my decision if I did choose to move there in the future.

I'm quite interested in more information about these claims as well. ^_^

Yeah, I would like some facts too since I live here and doesn't recognize it at all. Sure there are real problems in areas with lots of new immigrants and following unemployment, but that view is such a bitter generalization. You won't escape the feminism though. And that is something I like.

Can you elaborate on the feminism, how its different from other places, and why its a good thing?
itt people try to convince others that their country is shit and that they shouldn't want to live there
I doubt anyone is really qualified to judge this unless they've lived in quite a few different countries over the course of their lives. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.
I suppose I like Alberta, but the only other place I've ever lived was in British Columbia and it was relatively brief. I prefer the culture and landscape of BC, but the economy isn't as strong and they're subject to taxes we aren't. People are friendly enough in Alberta and I've never really been worried about crime unless I'm walking down a dark, abandoned road downtown at 3am.
My top choices right now would be Switzerland, Norway and the upper west coast of North America (San Fransisco, Vancouver, Seattle, etc).
I would love to live in Japan, but its very expensive for what i know and foreigners dont usually have an easy task if they're trying to find a job unless is for english teachers from what i've researched.
Also obviously South Korea as it seems as an amazing country in a lot of aspects.
Maybe Canada too, i've heard its a really nice country.
And finally Argentina and Spain, since they are the only 2 spanish talking country's i actually like.
Tokyo, Japan. I love hustle and bustle. If you need to escape, Japan is still beautiful and solitary outside of major cities. Japan's unemployment rate is good, too, and with any degree it's fairly easy to get a job teaching English. Plus you can buy used school girl panties in vending machines, but that goes without saying.

Lol high criminality rates. If you saw the criminality rates of my country's slums, you would start getting seizures then. I've been In malmo without even speaking Swedish and I have not seen Anti- Migrant movements, and I was always treated respectfully by the locals. Perhaps it's because im white lol. Or perhaps I acted decently, instead of acting like a loud ignorant .Geeze I hate that people. Black or White.
I would have to say Denmark. i haven't been there, but i had a long family history there. my great grandpa was mayor of a town in Denmark for most of his life, and they ended up changing the name of the town after him.
For a very long time I always wanted to live in Norway just because they have base jumping with a wingsuit HOW FUN!!! and of course I know people there but since im leaving for Japan tomorrow so for now its Japan.

Aaw you must have had an unlucky visit. Actual crime rates are relatively low although they are on the increase. If you got mugged I feel sorry for you, it seems really unlucky as I've yet to experience any crimes and I go out almost every weekend in stockholm and used to ride the subway out to a distant suburb at 5 in the morning all the time. As for immigration issues yeah there are some and it's fueling a certain amount of populism so hopefully our politicians start dealing with those problems. It's aweful that a country like sweden has ghetto-like areas in malmö without much integration and shitty living standards.
As for countries to live in, I suppose japan has always intrigued me and I loved tokyo (so much that I had to prolong my stay for an extra 2 weeks), but beyond the "thrill of curiosity" I wouldn't really prefer it to scandinavian countries. I've lived in all three scandinavian nations and I like it here. I liked canada too and the US certainly has its upsides.

The anti-antisemitism isn't "rampant" anywhere in Sweden. People live humble lives like everywhere else. There was some violence directed towards Jews - but it coincided with some Israeli offensive in Palestine. I think it was during the beginning of Barrack Obamas presidency in 2009 and Israel wanted to set the tone that USA couldn't push them around. 1034 died in Palestine during that year (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israeli%E2%80%93Palestinian_conflict), the largest amount of people in a single year since 1987
Feminism in Sweden is on it's backbone. It has support in academic circles but it's not a movement of any kind. The feminist party got something like 0,3% of the votes in the 2010 elections. Sure it's extreme, but if people can't relate to it it will wither up and die.
Sweden was a great country up until 2006. Then we got a conservative/liberal government that handled the economic part of the country but broke down everything else. Schools and high schools were solid back then, now public schools need to compete with private schools. Private schools want to make a profit so it's not unusual for a high school to have 5hr days and no lunch. The competition is just a fierce as it ever was in the job market - but with a lackluster school system the kids never get a fair chance. - The health care system is being diluted to the point where people with cancer still need to work part time in order to collect the government insurance. - The psychological health of the younger generation is bad - a lot of it stemming from high youth unemployment and lack of any power to control their destiny without a job. - Marketing to children is made easier. During the time when kids come home from school they can watch people transforming their bodies, doctors performing plastic surgery, Top Model, Project Runway etc. Disgraceful. - A LOT of small companies in Sweden abuse foreign labor. Be it cleaning jobs, carpentering or working field jobs like picking berries in the woods. Workers are payed and treated like slaves while the owner makes a profit. Sometimes a group of 30-40 workers don't get any money whatsoever and their government has to pay for their trip home. The Swedish government is looking the other way - probably because small business owners make up a large part of their voters - Morals are set aside in order to make a profit. In one case a marketing company that was helping a charity was taking 90% of the money and 10% made it to the cause. The owner of the call center thought it was alright (he kept 32 out of 42 million, money that was destined to support parents and children with after school projects.) - Working in Sweden is becoming a lot more stressful because of lackluster laws that help the workers. The aim is flexibility and there is very little you can do to change your work environment. Bosses take liberties with workers who are too afraid to quit all the while the official Government stance is you should work any job no matter the conditions. Bosses have carte blanche.
Norway and Sweden have a very similar language. If you're thinking of moving, it's a lot easier to find work in Norway and later on you can move to Sweden. Sweden is still a great country - and a country worth fighting for.
Russia (siberia) because of the amazing nature. Maybe Norway, Iceland and Canada for the same reason. South Korea for the brood wars. Im pretty much tied between those 5.
Gonna show some love for Denmark. Every Dane I've ever met has been awesome. I've been addicted to lego since I was tiny. It's not 40 degrees C and humid there -_- And the Danish royal family seems to have a thing for Aussies, so maybe I can marry a Princess or something.
Unfortunately, Danish is the only language I've ever encountered that I have been physically incapable of producing the correct sounds. My mouth literally can't form the appropriate shapes.
Tokyo, Japan, I love the lifestyle and the amount of leisure activities closely available. I would always get up in the morning and look forward to ramen and beer or a massive student breakfast for $2. Go to school, have a really nice lunch. Then at night go out to dinner with friends or a cheap all you can eat student dinner for $5, and go to a karaoke/arcade/kenpo/whatever (all of these are cheap). Go to bed exhausted but knowing you had a really great day, wake up in the morning repeat.
The closest I get here is, go to pizza with friends, and take a train to club/pub/dinner on weekends. Or go to the beach on the holidays.

I'm Danish. You're pretty silly saying that "it's not 40 degrees and humid there". Atm it's about 2C, raining and windy, how is that better? (and it's dark like 60% of the day)
I'm sorry to let you down but we have no danish princess atm (i think, lol). Unless you plan on getting married to a 4 year old.
I dont recommend Denmark, but I guess the grass is always greener on the other side as people have said.
For the record the UK is the most historic nation in the world, it has the best tradition, the best media coverage, the best universities, the best music, the best sport (we punch well above our weight in almost all sports), the best law system and the best politics system. We generally take the best from other countries and take the best. We do have our problems though: Bad weather, poor youth culture, and mediocre women. But if you are looking for experiences this place has it.
France is also pretty good as its food is of much better quality on average then any other country, and a great mix of climates.
Visited Denmark for a day didnt seem like there was anything remarkable about it, didnt seem like the country deserves the cred it is getting here. Never been to sweden, but none of the Swedes here seem that content with it.

Well the fact that the UK is a mixture of virtually every breed and langauge/culture + history would support your argument, but how can it be "best" or favorable in terms of history?
Many countries contributed to the history of the UK good and bad, so it's not YOURS, per se. Get it ?
Denmark is a small country, a proud country, and we have a high standard of living for most ppl. We got few homeless, truly homeless people, and we take care of everybody, the poor, the sick etc.. we got a healthy social and economical system, viable healthcare, viable banks, viable corporations... and we have a good political climate.. argueably. We have alot of quality based on how few people we aactually are.
Remember we achieve alot with few people.
You achieve alot with an abundance of people. See the difference ?
Oh yeah and we got free education for most people. You can be whatever you wanna be, if you're good at it. True pursuit of happiness, without economical barriers, only intelligence and creativity sets your own limits.. so.
Well I'd choose Switzerland or Australia or possibly Canada for the long run.
Switzerland is really nice pretty warm most of the year and in the winter close to skiing. Pay is great and standard and quality of life very nice. Lived in Japan and Tokyo for 2 years love it to death, most exciting fun cool place on Earth I'm sure but I'd hate to live there my whole life, you really start to realize many bad things the longer you stay there. In that regard I have really grown to like Sweden more as I've been abroad quite alot and it's not bad here, not at all in comparison to anywhere at least in Europe except Scandinavia and Switzerland. The Netherlands is alright, Germany too but still doesn't feel as high standard as here for some reason. The rest of the countries in Europe are kinda meh, and I've been to almost all of them. Even Japan is not as nice as people thinks, when you get out of the main centre of Tokyo and the culture of Kyoto it really feels like you're transported back 20 years to something which is not very different from Thailand. The people though are amazing and prices are NOT bad at all, it IS the most fun place in the world for all I've experienced but to have children there, no way.
On the other hand In response to the guy above which likes the UK, what a piece of garbage I must say. It has some charm the people can be alright too. Other than that, the standard is god save the Queen awful, London is dirty, the city is hella boring and gray, the houses pretty small and expensive as hell and for it you get a house which could be from Albania in terms of standard. Food sucks the women are bloody not too nice and the weather etc is not great either. Ok I do tend to exaggerate abit but not more than the guy above me does too to be honest.
I wonder just how you ended up like that, with all the best Universities, best culture, best sport abilities and so on... please explain!

I think he was referring to princess Mary when he said the Danish royal family seem to have a thing for Aussies because the danish prince is married to an australian women or tasmanian . And why is it silly to say that it's not 40 degrees ad humid here when it's true o.O maybe he likes a little colder weather than warmth and heat and high humid all the time in Australia. Not all the time but a long time of the year.

Talk about Elitist. lol
I guess I would choose Portugal if I were to live in some other country. I go there on vacation often to visit family and what not and I like it there. There's always something to do. It can get pretty boring sometimes though =/.
I don't think I would move there permanently though. If I could, I would go back and forth between Portugal and the U.S. I actually like living in the states.
Netherlands was really an amazing experience during Summer & WM. The smaller cities was entirely oranje lol. The dam and the language seemed really fun and I love a FLAT country.
Can't say I'm proud of Denmark as a nation. Sure all the welfare is amazing, but I often wonder if it's building better people. Huge public sector.
Im really surprised to see so many europeans wanting to live in Australia when what we want is to make our cities more european.
It seems all my asian international friends enjoy Australian culture but find it a boring country to live in cos its too quiet since we dont have the insane day/night business hours of Hong Kong or Tokyo and there isnt much of a nightlife outside of the cbd.
On the opposite side I would never want to live in a city like Hong Kong or Tokyo because of the hurried pace of the people and the lack of room to stretch my legs and walk around.

Living in Boston isnt so bad, but occasionally I am reminded that my country is run by a secret republican, half the states are theocracies and I have had to take on 60 grand in student loans just to do 4 years of undergrad and 1 year of graduate school because my government literally does not value my education, health or well being.

I live in Japan - if you haven't been then it's not what you expect For a start, where are the Gundams I was promised? There's only one in the whole country.... Not cool Japan.
Great country to come to, difficult to live in I will admit (not least because as the US embassy says Japanese is one of, if not the hardest language to learn...). Recommend at least a visit to everyone here.
I'm British, so I can tell the person on the first page it's not that hard to make a decent Yorkshire Pudding (they're awesome btw) but a real ploughman's lunch is an experience. Love my country with it's rain and pubs.
As it is I would love to try Switzerland - looks beautiful, European (been there a few times now, Europe rules) and probably the most democratic country in the world (sorry America), but I'll be immigrating to the US soon to marry a beautiful woman. Yay for freedom, apparently.
I would like to move about for most of my young life. When I settle somewhere I'd like to settle somewhere in Germanic Europe, depending on how well I find myself being able to adapt to a foreign-language speaking country. When I visited Germany, it just seemed to be such a fascinating and beautiful country (and I think I saw a total of around 3 people that I would consider bad-looking for the entire time I was there). Barring that, I really like California for the lovely weather and landscape.
I might like to live in Japan or Korea, but I would probably end up feeling really isolated and foreign due to my race and the low likelihood that I would ever be able to master the language.
I wouldn't mind moving to Québec for a while, though that's not a legitimate country, so much as it is a province within Canada. I want to go live with my frenchy-brothers for a bit and teach them that they have frenchy-brothers outside of their province!
In an effort for a more legitimate country: Finland. My great-grand-mother was finnish, which makes me 1/8th fin. I know a few words, a few cultural tidbits, a song or two, and have even come to appreciate some of their cuisine. Still, I'd really like to go live in Finland for a bit, just to meet some new people, learn some new things, see the nordic countryside. I know it probably resembles my local country side (I live in northern Ontario, Canada), but the pictures I've seen are just breathtaking. Kiitos
I would have to choose either Australia, any Scandinavian country pretty much, or here (Canada). But Nanaimo, B.C to be more specific. My dad's family is from there and it's an awesome little city.

Im surprised you choose Quebec. I live in Edmonton, and most people here in western Canada despise the French Canadian. Alberta especially, because of the massive debt Quebec owes us. They don't even want to be apart of Canada and if they weren't in such debt with the west they probably would be separate.
Living in Boston isnt so bad, but occasionally I am reminded that my country is run by a secret republican, half the states are theocracies and I have had to take on 60 grand in student loans just to do 4 years of undergrad and 1 year of graduate school because my government literally does not value my education, health or well being.
If you actually believe this, I'd genuinely like to know what school you went to.
As a Bostonian who went to school in another region of the US and has travelled in some of the world's actual "theocracies," I wish you wouldn't make us look like ill-informed, delusional, freshman ethnic studies students.

Let me guess, your either incredibly narrowminded and ill-informed on how things actually are in Norway. Do you think its a coincidence that every year Norway is on top of the list of "best countries to live in" I have read a few of your posts in this thread, and they just keep getting dumber and dumber. How you can with a straight face claim that our social system is a nightmare, unless your on disability because you dont care enough to actually work. Do you think that giving loans that you dont have the security/ability to pay is good? Really? I cant wait till your economically fit to get your ass somewhere else. Too bad im probably paying that with my tax money.
10 bucks says your registered on dagbladet.no and is a frequent poster there.
You live in the best country in the world, and you still whine like a 5 year old girl who didnt get candy.
So you just made up assumptions about me, trying to hit me low. Instead of betting who I am, you could simply ask. I dont read news paper for several reasons I dont think this thread needs. You see, I dont get my information from some stupid list of how great this country is. Do you even know the criteria for that list? I could make a similar list stating this is the worst country, but that would not paint the truth any clearer either. Instead of reading the newspaper and similiar junk media, I simply observe, yes, you can do that too, and make up your own mind about how things are around you. I see that the police dont give a rats ass in the streeth when it comes to real crime, they would rather tail a normal white guy for paying a whore. You dont really feel safe in Oslo's streeths anymore. I have seen and experienced this, not read it! Your argument just states that I am dumb, and that I am a 5 year old whiny girl. The system I am critisizing is also from experience, I have seen it, heard peoples stories (irl, not from a newspaper).
This thread was about to inform other people about your country, painting a fairy tale is not gonna help people know how the country really is. I told them how the nature in our renowned Fjord really is that Google pictures wont show you. I told them some of my own experiences with Norwegian people and the social system is, how people more and more tends to flag out to get medical help if they are to be treated fair and quick. This is, if you are thinking about actually living in Norway, because I am sure Norway is a great place to be a tourist in, if you can afford it and dont mind the price. If you want to relocate to another country, it is cause you are seeking to be more happy, not to be super duper safe, I can take care of my got damn loan thank you very much, dont need to be taxed 50% cause I am too dumb and short sighted in my spending. So take that list of yours and ask why that list should be true, what it actually says. Cause there are lists where some of the "shitiest" countries like Nigeria is said to have the most happy people.
And please instead of telling how dumb I am, how 5 year old whining bitch I am, instead just contribute what is great about Norway. It seems I hit a nerve or something.
you dident hit a nerve anywhere, your just one of those people that will never be happy im sure you sit home with your batchlor degree, in a appartment, with a car, and whine about how bad life is, in Norway, you will allways be safe, we got good health care, we got great nature, but its expensive here, thats why we got sweden next to us anyways, you have said your bad points now, not anypoint on keep draggign Norway down because of your experience, for the rest of us seems to like it
I am somewhat happy in Sweden actually, sure it aint perfect but every other country has the same problems but kinda worse
I have seriously considered moving to Norway tho. So might say that. Finland if they had a bit better eco, Denmark if not for the language.
Canada if they had decent Internet, same with Australia. USA if i had a great job, otherwise no. Netherlands sounds kinda fun but they have some politic views that just crash with mine.
Japan if i could handle the language, but i think Japan is kinda idolized, from the persons i have talked to who lived in Japan as foriegners its no great hit.
I always wanted to live in china but after living here for half a year now (and already lived here before for 1 year) I've somewhat lost interest, it's a great country to live in while you are young (say <40) and 'have money' (not extremely much but enough for a good apartment/convenient etc). If I wouldn't be able to have both I wouldn't like it here all that much. I'm a Dutch native and after being in China for quite a while the Netherlands just look better and better. I'd love to try out the US (might even happen) to see how living is over there but I think I'd be happiest living in Singapore or Hong Kong (at least if I can make a decent living there). I love city life and thus big cities really attract me. I've visited both and the enviroment I really what i'm looking for. I love the weather, warm/hot and humid. People are great, both are (relatively) clean and it's in Asia, so no shit with huge time difference to Korea :-).

My danish teacher always said, to pronounce danish properly you have to speak like you have a hot potato in your mouth. I live 5km south of the danish border, when i go to the beach i can see denmark even with bad weather and we have tons of danish tourists every weekend, so it's quite normal to take danish as second foreign language.
I think the hardest part about your "test" is to know that the Ds are actually pronounced more like Ls.
On Topic: I like germany and i probably stay here. Moved around enough in my life and want to stay in a place for a while. Northern germany is actually quite fine, nice people, close to the water, people don't freak out when there is a little wind (people in munich did freak out once when i lived there, everyone stayed indoors and shops closed because "omg, storm!" while my ex and i walked around wondering what the hell everyone was so scared about), too bad the work situation in this town is so bad for programmers.

Im sorta sympathetic with this. Yes, the cost of living is rather high, and our beuracracy is rather incompetent at times. But I do believe you are doing the same thing as people who focus only on the good things; instead you focus on only the bad things. It is with Norway as it is with every other country, there are good things and there are bad things. Its about weighing the positive with the negative and drawing your own conclusion from that. I do not share the same experiences as you do, but that does not make you wrong, only one-sided. But honestly, do you think that our social services are that terrible? free hospitals, welfare and all that jazz?
For myself though, I grew up in - and still Live in a rural area. Quite a distance from any town with more than 50k people in it. I like to call it the Alabama of Norway. Farms, tractors and bad Moonshine. Our house is surrounded by big fields where some local tractormonkey grows wheat, and during the early Summer months, he fertilizes them. With cow faeces. It gets so bad, you Really cant have your windows open. But you know what? I wouldnt leave if you gave me Money.
But if I had to choose, I want to Live in Canada. Similar weather, and generally nice people. Germany isent bad too, beer, pretty ladies, good cars and the biggest producer of industrial automation.
If one was to step back and think of everything possible I believe they would probably choose California as the "country" they would want to live in. Yes, I know it isn't a country, but it is as large as many countries and in good times in the USA has the GDP to rival other countries.
No matter where you go everyone hates their own government, so lets leave that out. Job opportunities are unlimited full range. Things you can do snow or sun or water. Sports - a bit lacking in football (in my opinion), but good for baseball soccer basketball and hockey? Cost of living - a bit overprices, but that can be avoided. Crime - If you choose to live in the shittiest area of any state or country you must deal with it, but most places are quite decent.
My opinion is based on actively you can do any physical activity there and the state's population is so high that most jobs are there. At the moment yes, the US is a bit fucked, but eventually California would probably be the place to live if you wanted the best of all worlds.
I'd prefer to stay in Canada, nothing beats wide open spaces, sparse population, good programs, friendly people, vast expanses of nothing but nature. The only downside is the extreme temperatures in the winter.
If I had to move though it would be to the UK so I can watch all of the live EPL I could. Or any Western European country would be great.
I'm so thankful that I have been born/raised in Canada, and whenever I have thought about uprooting and moving somewhere else, it has only been within Canada (somewhere nice in BC, specifically) so I haven't given the idea of actually emigrating to another country much thought.
However, if for some bizarre reason I was ever forced to leave Canada (), I would probably move to the north-eastern US or maybe Sweden/Norway/England (I think in that order, too). Warmer climates are not really my thing I guess :/
Another point about denmark is that ive been drinking "alcoholic beverages" since I was fucking 14, we know how to party here in the denmark.
And people can still party without being drunk out their ass, people are happy when i meet them, but then again I am pretty much allways affected by a happiness pill (just natural), just last friday I saw my crush ( i think it was here atleast lol ) kiss some other dude, now she acts like nothing has happend and the only thing that happend is me deciding not to hit on her any more. and most people are socially awesome in my envoirenment (is that spelled right?) atleast Oh did I mention beer? Cheap and delcious at every grocery store.
Denmark is also one helluva tolerant country for the most part. While there is exception its also known as one of the most gay friendly country in the world (bisexual girls isnt that uncommon at all, though homosexual boys are rarer). I want to be a big denmark commercial when I grow up, fuck yeah.. I like doing this.

I like living here in LA. Moved here from Manila and I can't imagine any other place being much better. Other big cities in California may be close but I'd rather stay here. The only thing that's really bad is the traffic. It has a nice mix of Western culture with Asian influences, good weather and tons of authentic food from lots of different ethnicities.
If you like food, especially all sorts of Asian food, LA is really the place to be. The area has the largest or close to the largest population of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Iranian, Indian, etc. outside of their respective home countries. You can find all sorts of authentic food and fusions and whatnot over here.
I'm glad to see so many people praising the country where they were born/live. Whatever country you live in you should take pride in it because it's yours. If you are unhappy with a certain aspect of it you should own the issue instead of just bashing.

Why so ? If one doesn't like his homeland for reason X or Y, why couldn't one try and live in a place where one feels better ? Ain't that what the USA was all about in the first place ? To me that's what the discussion is all about, I don't see this forum as the place to 'own the issues' anyway but I don't see much bashing either. And anyhow, if I hate cold weather and the smell of dried fish, how am I supposed to own the issue of being born in &&&&'ing Greenland ? Start a business of processed meat ? Vote for the guy who promises free electric heaters for everyone ?

Hey man... When I went to the US, I spent several hours in Heathrow - Now I'm a f*cking expert on everything english. Now, I'm not gonna h8 - but really. I reckon you don't really know much about Denmark (or Sweden for that matter). Please stop hating.
As for the sports. Football put aside (how did the World Cup go btw, lolol + Chealsea is to play a danish team in Champions League - so what the...?!?) Caroline Wozniacki is danish - she's been ranked #1 world tennis player for around a year. We just came second in the handball world cup - after actually pushing the finals into extra time.
Denmark is (along with China and Taiwan (I reckon)) one of the single best countries in the world at badminton.
Really... I dont mind your opinion. But get your facts straight. Even if you don't care for tennis, handball or badminton it's still huge sports in other parts of your world. I really dont fancy cricket or tea - but you dont see me hating, do you?
The US has so much variety, I'd never want to leave permanently. For a few years, France. French is so beautiful. Never been to Germany, Japan or New Zealand but they sound interesting.
Funny to see so much climate-driven stuff, I wonder how many people prefer their 'native' climate and how many want to switch. I'm from Michigan, which has quite a range of weather (and actually is not the frozen tundra some seem to think it is). When I lived in California, it was sunny and warm every day... and I couldn't take it! I want rain, sun, snow, everything!

I'm really happy with the weather. Rain, sunny skies, snow and everything. But like 100+ days a year it's just grey'ish... Not cool... And even though I love the long summer nights (sun's going down around 11pm in the summer) - I just find Denmark to be too cold. But somehow (this goes for everywhere in the world) - the further you get towards the equator - the more a nation's economy is based on tourism, which leads to it's LESS focused on education/production/service. So if I could have an australian/canadian/scandinavian-type o' country with a southern europe-like climate, I'd love it.
..... I actually think this is kindda what Australia is like... but I hope you're getting my point
The United States of America. I lived in England for 2 years. I visited Canada for a while. It was enough to give me the desire to never leave this country again.

What are you talking about man? Australia is great!! I've been there several times, 1 time with a working visum and served as a bartender in Byron Bay for a good 6 months.. Just one long party man
Also, the wildlife you guys have.. You just don't find it anywhere else on the planet..
Oh, and did I mention Darling Harbour at sunset with a clear sky? And the barrier reef? And Cairns in autum? (When it's not flooded and being hit by hurricanes) And Coala bears?
God damn it man, your country is awesome, you should pay more attention
I agree with ELA. I would love to live in Australia. I just love everything about the country. Not only is it beautiful there, but the people are great. That and it's sports heaven!
I would quite enjoy to live in Russia. It's alot like Canada Weather wise, actually it is a bit hotter there. I just love the Russian culture! Second choice would be Germany!!!
Been checking the imigration job requirements for Australia and New Zealand for ages but clearly they dont require my area of expertise so no luck. Also as a retirement plan i will get turned down based on the investment and yearly income required to actually stand a chance of getting a VISA there...still hoping for it to change one day.
Probably will end up in Fidji or Central / Northern Europe...time will tell
Sweden, where I'm from - Though I hate the winter here, too cold and dark. I dont mind a couple of months of winter, but it's extreme in Sweden, so I would probably choose Vancouver, Canada, they have four seasons but not extreme winters as far as I understand.
Australia sounds nice also... but I think I would get tired of the heat after a year or two.
If not my home country of USA then London or Stockholm.
After visiting London, I fell in love with the small area of Kensington within London. Love the area, the parks, the people, the TUBE, and their accents.
Sweden... Haven't been there but Swedish (girl) accents are hot when they are speaking English. Not sure if I could actually live there after living in San Diego my whole life. But I'd try.
The Greek islands, absolutley beautiful area. That is of course if Greece improves their economic state. Beautiful places on the Med. The east coast of Australia would also be awesome, I love Australian people and the coastal climate.
