I can't play fast and/or clean with it. Do you guys play fast rock/metal with a lot of power chords and palm muting as well? Because I really can't get my lead position to sound good for those songs. Maybe I just need to get used to it. Yep, and I use your 'lead' position for that as well, tbh I don't understand how one could play fast palm mutes with your other style :D. You should really try to always use the same way of holding the pick, maybe it's impacted by how you use your wrist, pay attention to that.

Also, I'm currently tutoring a person who is already 50 years old and has a lot of experience just playing chords on his own (no formal experience however). I was wondering if I should be thorough with his education, to force him to change all the bad habits he has acquired over the years. I thought this might be rather too ambitious, since if one follows the method of breaking a person down before building them up, it's sabotaged by the act of quitting halfway through due to frustration.

Well, that's a good question. How do you think he would react? Is he the kind of person to give up fairly easily? You have to judge that or ask him directly. Can't say anything in regards to your first question, sorry. Since this thread is a little more active now than it used to be (which is awesome), I'll sorta repeat my unanswered question from the last page: what picks are you guys using, which do you recommend and which thickness do you play at? I'm currently on Dunlop Tortex 1mm, happy so far but not sure if too thick. Looking at the Ibanez Steve Vai picks and the Ibanez Grip Wizard Medium series at the moment...

You have to judge that or ask him directly. The specific example I was thinking of was the tension in the thumb of his left hand. He puts a lot of pressure on it and I noticed he basically never moves it when doing the standard chords, keeping it at a fixed tense position. I had him play some scales that force left-hand movement and he tries to weirdly stretch his hand just to maintain his thumb in fixed position. He's aware of it now and he can consciously avoid it, but every time we try something that's new for him he reverts back to old habits and I'm wondering if I should fix issues like this before moving on to more advanced pieces or if that would make him frustrated. He says he wants to learn how to play properly, but it might be too stressful for him. It's essentially at my discretion since I'm the person to tell him what to focus on and I can choose to not notice.

Go between Dunlop Jazz IIIs and a mix of various other thinner ones I like the feel of when I'm in stores. Former are damn tight for alternate picking, thickness gives a good bit of bite to metal/hard rock riffs. Thinner nylon ones are fantastic I find for strummed passages and sweep picking especially. Thinner ones tend to have the necessary give to sweep smoothly over the strings.

Don't you ever consider yourself to be playing both or plan on changing roles mid song? Yes, but I hybrid pick anyway, so I can dedicate the pointy 1mm pick to single notes only.

For the brief 10 second solo part, is that any sort of specific guitar effect? It sounds a bit unusual to me.

Although lately I've been using dava picks which are kind like the same but with a soft part that can bend, only the edge is in a strong plastic, I like em. http://www.davapick.com/ Also this week, I decided to active the 'fuck it' mode and went on buying a 1986 charvel, a blackstar HT -20 Studio and a Boss Hm-2 :D Can't wait for everything to arrive !

It's from Thomann, a huge Germany-based online music shop that definitely ships to the Netherlands as well I'm sure! Looks like this: They have a ton of other motives as well, Hetfield/Metallica, Motorhead/Warpig, Frank Zappa/Freak Out, The Beatles, Johnny Cash, Bob Marley, you name it! :p @Girondelle: I've tried these Dava picks and HATED them haha. They bend sooo much when I play with them somehow. Grip's excellent though. Also, nice new gear there, let us know how it sounds when it arrives!
