"A smaller moon means less scattered sunlight at night—that's all moonlight is—which would mean darker nighttimes." https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/half-mass-moon/ That article has a lot more info on the topic too

So in this case, a full moon night would be as light as a 2/3 moon night is now. On new moon nights, obviously nothing changes. Any other night would be about as bright as one that has 2/3 of the current moon shining. So half moon would be as bright as 2/6 moon, 3/4 moon as bright as half moon. Definitively a bit darker, but not total darkness all the time.

Current hypothesis for the formation of the moon is accretion of matter sent flying from the earth by an impact with an "asteroid" the size of mars. This model predicts that the moon was at first 15 times closer to the earth and that it drifted over time to its current orbit, accelerated through tidal forces (energy coming from earth rotation slowing down). That means the moon appeared to be a lot larger when life first appeared, days were a lot shorter (~4hours to begin with), months (as in moon phases) shorter too, ... Then the question is: how could we verify the hypothesis against historical record ? What consequence could still be detected hunderds of millions of years later ? I've only read about one article on the growth rate of sea shells (comparing the model against the fossil record), but there are probably more to be found.
