That's her responsibility isn't it? If she wants to be even more stuck up and disrespectful, that's fine, but from that point on she won't get off for free like she appearantly has been for quite a long time.
For the action she did she deserves the laptop to be shot. Everybody needs to vent, parents and children alike. But putting it on facebook as a way to get recognition and fame for it while antagonizing your parents to the world? Even the sheer audacity to blocking messages to your parents on a social network, while you KNOW that your dad is working in IT, of all the industries, shows some pretty bad cognitive skills.

I'm not going to say the guy in the video did everything right... but how would you have not 'failed to teach her some basic responsibilities'?
What would be your methodology to teach her not to be like this, and how would it be better than what he has done (at least until this video).

What a sad sad man. How can anyone in their right mind think that this will teach the girl anything other than hating him even more? Sheeeit, before facebook the girl woulda whined to her friends just the same, hes just butthurt he actually "overheard" it. And that shit in the end with the gun - seriously what the fuck - this guy shouldn't even be allowed to have a kid...What or who is he gonna shoot when she comes home drunk 1 night or even better, when he founds out shes been having sex.

Oh look! An american doing something stupid with guns and then putting it online! He also is conservative and ignorant! People really like "Olds" more than "News"... After the TP reference I'm just gonna ad: How. original.

firstly, he knowingly breached her privacy, which is wrong on so many levels. Sure, it's ok to do it when your kid is 8-12 years old, but parents should have basic respect for their kid's privacy by the time they are 16 years old. I'm not saying that the bitching on facebook to your friends is right, or that the tone in which her message was written is right, it's obviously a horrible thing to do, but she is a teenager. All teenagers bitch and whine, I remember whining to my friends about my parents all the time, it just wasn't over facebook. I mean, if the message was out only to her friends and just for bitching sake, I honestly don't see the difference and don't see what is wrong with it compared to going out and bitching to your friends just so you can bitch. There is no sure way of knowing it was hidden only from her parents or if it was posted only to a group of friends from this video anyway.
If you can't take some bitching from your kid in his teenage years, without flipping out and shooting your kid's laptop with a fucking .45 you shouldn't be a parent, period. 99% of kids ages 14-18 think their parents suck and make them work more than they should because they have "a feeling in their gut" they are better than almost every other social group out there. It's called being a teenager ffs.
I sincerely doubt he ever sat for a decent conversation with his daughter, he probably thinks that everyhing he considers to be right/moral/etc is a given without even talking about it.
I mean, he obviously failed to explain to his daughter that the basic chores she has to daily are part of her responsibilities & she has it easy and things will get a lot worse during her life, since there is no way that 15 minutes of work daily would produce that kind of angst from her,
dunno, I have a younger sister who is 16 atm and she bitches all the time. I just laugh at her and tell her to do the chores and gets rid of it without even thinking about it, it's a fast\efficient way to keep everyone happy.

Go pissed-off dad! Teenagers are capable of incredibly stupid and spiteful things - way to teach her that there are consequences to biting the hand that feeds. Can't say that I approve of using a gun when a hammer would have sufficed, but bully for you, angry dad!
|
Good punishment, but what the fuck man, why destroy the laptop? It would be better to sell it, imo.

Childish, sad and pathetic man showing such glee at getting one over on his 15 year old daughter who is completely in his power anyway. A fruitless gesture, a childish tantrum to go and destroy a piece of property in order to "make a point". Way to lead by example, you terrible parent.
He think's he'll get some sort of respect from this. He will get nothing from his daughter but contempt.

Sounds like that's par for the course since contempt was all he was getting before posting this video, lol.

What a disgusting control cowboy to a dad. She is a teenage girl ranting a bit on the internet year 2012 about her parents and chores. So instead of taking serious talkes with his daughter and talk about how she feels and make a deal about when and what chores she would like to help out with he sinks to her level by making a fucking video about it and gets to shoot a round with his gun, puts it on the internet (why?) and it goes viral. Good job dad! Way to go when you wanna connect and understand your kid.
He is also pathetic for bringing up how he worked and went to school at the same time when he was her age and therefor she should get a job. She is fucking 15 years old. You should encourage her to focus on her studies, friends and hobbies on the free time. Not push her to get a job and make her do chores like cooking you dinner, getting you coffee or fixing your garden.
And for you who says "he is paying for everything he is in charge/she should get a job to help paying for herself" should get a reality check. The parents decided to bring a new life to this world, they are obligated to provide her with roof over her head, clothes on her body, food and money till she is 18 years old and is still a student. Thats at least how it is where I live.
This video just showed the typical stereotype of american hill billy Southerners with cowboy hats and guns. :p

First off, bitching to your friends is okay, putting it out there so everyone can go ahead and laugh about it is not.
This isn't like his daughter just didn't do her daily chores once and he flipped out in a dominating rage. This is her doing lots of shit on multiple occasions and to top it off breach the grounding rules and disrespect people that work for her on a daily basis so she can enjoy the good life. If you think that just chatting about responsibilities will get some people to understand you are sadly mistaken about how it is learned. Responsibility is something you learn in practice, not by simply doing chores because X said so. Most of her responsibilities were just basic things like making up your own bed and cleaning out the dishwasher and she goes about as if she's a slave worker dying to be freed from tyranny.
And lastly, its really freaking easy to look at your sister, who you don't have any responsibility to, and say you would do a better job because you can convince her to do something. But if you're a father, you're supposed to guide your child towards a functional adulthood. You can't sidestep that responsibility, because that would mean being absent. And being absent is just about the worst kind of parenting you can do.

I believe it is justified. She writes the post on Facebook to her parents not to her friends. Her dad went through all that trouble to help her with her computer etc and she just spits in their faces. Kids are spoiled these days and take advantage of their parents. Parents don't have the balls to do anything like this. He didn't do anything wrong, he bought that laptop which makes it his and he can shoot it if he wants to. Obviously if hes going to make a video like this and post it on the net which takes balls, just shows how much he actually cares and loves her. One day when that kid is older she will understand why her dad did this and will thank him. For all you people that think he wasn't doing the right thing, did you even listen to what he was saying? Her chores are so easy which take max 15 minutes to do, her life is so easy, she makes fun of a women that isn't even a cleaning lady. Good job Dad Im proud of you.

I don't get why so many European posters are treating this guy like some kind of malevolent dictator. Both my parents came from the old world, and they would have beaten my ass if I'd said something like "I can't wait until you're old and helpless so that I can make you suffer" just because I didn't want to do the dishes and make my bed, LOL. Has Europe's parenting style become so different in the last ten years?
I mean, is that kind of behavior normal? I hear some pretty bad stories about my nephews in Britain, but is it really normal that a fifteen-year-old can treat her parents like shit while doing basically nothing in return?
And are people really suggesting that he's a bad guy for wanting his daughter to have some kind of job? Is it really considered unreasonable for a kid to have a part-time job while they're in middle school? I mean, my father had me making salads and washing dishes in his kitchen after school when I was fourteen, and it wasn't really that bad - not remotely as bad as working and going to law school at the same time when I was in my twenties. Are people suggesting that kids are entitled to complete and unmitigated free time once they finish a few hours of school every day?
Or do we have a disproportionate number of young people on Team Liquid, skewing the responses to this post? I think that's the most likely scenario, lol.

the point is, there is a whole plethora of wrong and right actions he could have done to deal with the situation, and he chose the exact same thing a raging teenage boy with an access to a gun would do. For me, this is just parenting fail.
Also, not having any responsibility to my sister, wat? She is not my daughter, but I wouldn't ever classify it as having no responsibility to her, rofl. Our age difference is +11 in favor of me, a few years more and I could have been her father. When she was 2-3 years old, I changed her diapers, I was the babysitter my parents needed when they had to go away from the house etc, and I'm taking part in providing for her financially. No responsibilites, eh.

You're one to talk about skewing responses, many of the 'European posters' aren't saying that 'it's normal for a fifteen year old to treat their parents like shit', or that 'he's a bad guy for wanting his daughter to have some kind of job?'. We're saying that it's ridiculous that he's choosing to discipline his child for something, relatively trivial by shooting (that means using a lethal weapon) an inanimate object which has meaning to the child.

What a waste of a laptop. He could have donated it to someone who needed it. I wonder if he took the time to go through and save important documents she may have been using for school.
|
Well, I mean who didnt bitch about his parents when we were around "that" age? The only difference is, that I talked to ppl and didnt post anything on the internet (which is pretty stupid to do imo).
Guess I wouldnt take it as serious as he did and just let her bitch and complain about that cruel cruel world she is facing when being 15years old. Still a bit punishement should be. Taking away her laptop and giving her a blackboard and some chalk so she can write on a wall would be damn funny though :D

I also wants to add that in many countries in Europe it's illegal to work as a kid. For the most part there is a law that you have to go to school till you are 16 or 18 (different for each country) I believe, after that you can quit and start to work if you so want. But no, you can't go to school as a 14-15 year old and then take a part time job because you wouldn't be able to get paid. What you can do is during the ~3 month summer vacation each year between the ages of 16 and 19 you can get a "summer job" to make money during the summer because you don't get money from going to school during this period.

Guns are also pretty rare in most European countries.
Indeed, summer jobs are pretty normal, and are great to earn a bit of money and some experience, they can even be fun!
