docvoc United States. February 11 2012 12:50 The most childish thing was destroying her freedom of speech, she has that right, and you can't destroy HER property because you as an adult feel disrespected. When someone curses another person out, do they shoot up their laptops?
Although he did act in an extreme manner I would like to ask you if you truely believe that she owned that laptop. (and when I say owned I mean bought it with her money) If she in fact did not buy it but was gifted it from a father who felt she was entitled to a laptop of her own I still consider that his laptop, that he bought, with his money, and gifted that to his daughter in the trust she would respect it and follow proper netiquette. And if you pull the "oh what if her mom bought it for her" card on me he said in the video that he and the mother had agreed she was out of line and discussed the punishment together (while he was busting a cap in it). Blabbing your problems to the whole world on a social networking site is bad enough, but when you drag other peoples names into it that's when you've involved them personally in a matter that with better communication between the two individuals could have been solved in a more grown up manner. Since she acted in a childish manner it would stand to reason that you can only effectively communicate with her in childish ways.
My point being maybe his parenting skills shouldn't be dragged into this when it comes right down to it because none of us know if this worked and got through to her that her dad is tired of being disrespected, not to mention humiliated in front of her friends and their families. And my last order of business is that him destroying the laptop which I am sure is HIS in the first place is HIS decision to make. If it indeed is hers, which I highly doubt, he stated it wasn't in a satisfactory condition to meet her needs. He installed $130 of software/parts in it which I imagine he did outta the love and appreciation he has for his daughter. Seems to me she could use a reality check because she could have it way worse.

How is he going to expect his daughter to ever become a responsible, well mannered adult if he models tantrum behavior to her? Because that's what he did, was throw a big tantrum. It isn't her property... Last I checked when you don't pay for something it isn't yours, unless it is given to you... This is more of a "I am letting you use this"...
|
She addressed the letter to her parents and tried to hide it from them? lol weird Obviously there are two sides to the situation and it wouldn't be logical to fully agree with either the dad or child since we don't really know who to believe. For example, she says that she has to make all the beds and he says that she only has to make hers. I just think that it's too harsh to destroy her computer and make her pay for the new software as a punishment and I'm fairly certain he said "lazy ass" yeah? That's no way to talk to your daughter, even if she said rude things to you first... it's just childish. It also doesn't make much sense to say things like "My life was way harder when I was a kid, so you have nothing to complain about" because his childhood probably involved very different circumstances and he's part of a different generation. My 2 cents anyways. >,>

That's not quite how the father/child relationship works. The parent has the right to take shit away, especially if they bought it. If they bought it, they can also destroy it. Also, that was rather funny though. "You'll have to pay me back for these bullets."

I think he could have just donated the laptop to charity or something, but I suppose bullets work too.

I actually developed a liking for the father. While he was a bit tough in his punishment, he seems to be a hardworking and honest person. Plus, he doesn't seem like the average redneck Southerner (he actually went to college OMGAH). Anyways, he had all the right to do what he did, although shooting a gun in public is questionable.

I would love to hear the actual reasoning behind how what a parent buys for a child is now the childs property in a way equal to the child purchasing it themselves.

The dad had every right to be mad but I think he needs to consider the impact of social networking sites like facebook on modern parent-child relations. This girl is going to be MORTIFIED - 3 million people have already seen it, its probably going to be in the national news and the views are only going to go up. I think the dad should have made a facebook post regarding the incident. This is going to ravage their future relationships.
