He was most likely very frustrated as nothing happened and had to do something. It is sad that it had to come that far but now that he has done it, we will see what is going to happen. The cynic in me says nothing but we can always hope for the best. Still a bad video but many people will disagree with me Again, I am not playing down his message at all. if nothing else worked, he can at least try it this way. Only the method makes me crazy. CRAZY.
I can understand this way of thinking, but it seems to be for a legitimate cause. I don't think a lot of people can doubt this would be a modest USE of the American Army at this point and time. America always brands itself as the world "Justice" or "Police", well this fits the bill to me.

CRAZY. + Show Spoiler + That's how I felt too. Also it made an impression on me how they kept saying send <insert correct amount of money> EVERY MONTH.Well how about no?I am very sceptical when it comes to private oganisations demanding money for some cause. Not saying this guy is a con artist but there haven't been one or two cases where people sent their money for something and then it turned out not all the money went into doing that. And that guy seemed to be living in a pretty nice home. Should Kony be stopped - for sure. And yet somehow for some reason I don't like this movement.Maybe it's because of the way it was presented to me which the guy i quoted described. And the one main thing I didn't like was the part where people where rallied up chanting making serious faces and rising their hands like they did something. No you didn't.All you did was give your spare change and click 1 button on a stupid site to make your conscience feel better.(I'm almost sure I made some mistake with the tense here but I just can't figure out how the phrase it).
Maybe I'm too much of a pesimist but hey I didn't chose where to be born or how to be raised.
Everything aside this Kony guys sounds pretty impressive. I'm not saying I like the guy but sustaining an army with no support for more than 20 years is an achievement.
While I would not say he had direct support, I think rape and pillage may count as a form of self-sustainment.

dude who made this video couldn't be more unlikable, go tell "Gav" where those minerals in his iphone came from brah

My first thoughts when i saw thread title was "oh this joseph kony guy must be pretty swell, people even making threads to make him famous! I wonder what kind of awesome thing he has done" :/

Too sensational and populistic. Even the crying was staged and artificial. This sort of thing is why I can never trust charity groups: they think manipulative methods are acceptable when it's all for a good cause. In a way I can understand this, but the price of such chronic dishonesty is long-term suspicion. You just never know if you're getting the whole story.
That said, it'd take a heart of stone to not appreciate what they are trying to do. I won't give them a cent, but i'll make sure my friends are aware of who Kony is.

The solution is simple, everyone on facebook and on the world should pay mones into a fond. Everyone should donate a few dollars ore some cents to this fond.
The purpose of the fond should be to pay the one who kills this Mr. Joseph Kony. In addition I would start a fond for Mr. Bashar al-Assad and for Mr. Kim Jong-un and several other despots.
We should cleanse the world from these people.
We have the possibilities to set up these fonds, we have techonologies like paypal and other online payment sources. This undertaking should be started by someone, I would donate immediatly to these fonds.
Shit on the international community, lets use our own money and influence to get rid of these creatures ourselves privatly and without national policy getting intermingled.
of course in addition to normal charity but there should alo be priviate killings fonds out there for the assholes of the world.

Because when Kim-Jong-Il died, North-Korea really did a 180.
I wish it really was as easy as killing a few evil heads of state.

The cause is good but the video is just horrible. As earlier posters said; manipulative.

Yes, then I would let the next successor to be killed until these kind of people realise that there is no place for them here on earth. We should carry the fear and terror to these despots that fester among the people and drain them of their freedom and of their rights and of their wealth.

Been following and helping out with Invisible Children for several years. This is a big deal, and is an under-reported aspect of the atrocities going on in that region. Everyone should watch that documentary.

How exactly does the filmaker support himself? Seems like all he does is travel around the world. Unless he's paid to speek at schools, or even takes money from the donations. If anyone can shed some light on this I'd appreciate it.

The thing is, this dude and his kid probably pass homeless guys on the street everyday and do nothing, maybe give them some change but nothing major. The reason they have taken on this Kony guy is because it is sexy, it is grand and exciting, it gives their life meaning, they wouldn't get headlines or sexy african locations if they were to give homeless dudes a bath and some food and a bed for the night. "Causes" like this are never about helping anyone, not primarily anyway, it is always about the desires (and the satisfaction of those desires) of the person behind the "cause."
Don't get me wrong the Kony guy is contemptible and deserves taking down but the american dude is just as contemptible imo, but for other reasons.

This, except I thought it was someone's cool quest to be renowned worldwide from modest Facebook roots. With the OP's permission, can the thread title be changed by a mod to replace the word "famous" with "infamous" as was suggested in the first couple of comments?
I'm not usually this concerned with correctness, but this is kind of offensive from my understanding of what it is to be famous as opposed to infamous.

Have of course heard of Joseph Kony far too many times for it not to be insanely depressing, but I had not heard of Invisible Children and Jason Russell(the director of this film) before. So I did some research and am glad to say that the more I find, the more I am okay with these people representing this cause. I was especially pleased with finding this in their FAQ:
Can I volunteer with Invisible Children in Uganda? While we appreciate and understand your eagerness to serve overseas, Invisible Children does not have a volunteer program abroad. As we’ve developed as an organization, we’ve seen how a large influx of people without a specific purpose can be detrimental to a small community. As a result, the programs we have developed on the ground focus on Ugandans helping Ugandans.
As for Jason Russell, any wealth he happens to have is in all likelihood not from Invisible Children. His own commercial work should have taken care of that.
So while I prefer to give my own money to other causes, dont let any uninformed skeptics stop you if you want to help this one. And even if you don't support them monetarily, do tell people of Joseph Kony, and don't cause a shitstorm when stopping him turns out not to be a walk in the park.

That may be true, but you cant blame him for not helping everyone, thats in no ones power. One can be glad that he is trying to help someone and that he is finding some audience.
Maybe he is helping because he has some self interrest, but that makes him better then everyone not helping or people even harming others.

Jospeh Kony is a despicable man who deserves the worse possible punishment, but the true problem is that he's just 1 out of dozens of similar rebel leaders all throughout Africa. Simply taking him out reduces the problem slightly, but honestly doesn't do much. You have to attack it at the source. (Taking our their funding/etc, which is primarly centered around a lot of luxuries we as 1st worlders absolutely covet and spend hundreds-thousands of dollars upon.)

are people really bitching about how the movie was made? it's 30 minutes of your life, can't even afford to spare that when all the crazy shit thats happening?
I thought the movie was great and got the point across perfectly.

I think INfamous is the word you are looking for. I saw Joseph Kony being famous? wut? Misleading title.

There's been a few things like this. Like in Liberia where they fed child soldiers drugs and made them eat people. It really surprises me in a way that things like this still go on in the world, but I guess I'm so far removed from them.
+ Show Spoiler [comment with perhaps slightly poor taste] +I couldn't help but expect Joseph Kony to turn out to be Marlon Brando.
