Which would be best in getting you into shape? My coach says if I RUN(Sprint)a mile everyday it would help me get into shape BUT I also ride my bike everyday so I'm trying to stick with only one of them. So if anyone is 100% sure of what they're talking about then can someone plz tell me which would be BEST or BETTER than the other in getting u into shape bike riding or running?
Also while we are talking about exercising what are reps(like what does it stand for? repititions? repeating?) and also after u do serious workouts and exercises should u rest a couple of days b4 doing more? Because after my serious workouts the next day I do real poor in basketball becuz I'm just so darn tired but my mom tells me that the best way is to keep exercising even when you're tired cuz it will build more muscle mass or something like that. If any1 knows feel free to post.Thanx.
Also I forgot to add this. Does bike riding slow ur speed down in quickness like running? Will bike running still let u keep ur normal running speed? And also any type of running will make u faster right? But if u ride a bike will it still have the same results(help make u run faster or will it slow u down in running?)? Also I can ride my bike waaaay longer than I can run. Can someone answer me this?------->>>>> Is bike riding helping ur legs more while running helps ur heart more and help u MORE in getting into shape?

Dont sprint a mile, that wiull wear you quickly. Jogging is probably the best for you. Just jog for like an hour every day (or a certain distance if you prefer). It takes a lot more energy to jog then it does to ride a bike. To sprint a mile, your body will only digest the energy in your glycogen (inside muscles/liver) and since it ends quickly then your body wont have much of a chance to get at any fat.
|
Running the mile is better.
|
running mile is more harder, but make sure your running right so you dont screw up your mucles and joints. if you ever wake up with a sore, dont do anything that day. your body is telling you, that it needs rest.
|
How about you explain what running is "right" geeuknit. I'd be interested.
There's no way you can sprint a mile. Period. Football players are gassed after spinting 100 on a kick return or whatever. You can run it, but I suggest jogging.
|
Coach probably means running a mile almost as fast as he can. Obviously not sprinting, but probably more than a "jog" too.
Both running and biking are good for you. I don't have anything to support this, but I imagine running would burn more calories per unit of time. Also, basketball involves running, so running would be the best practice for b-ball.

There is no "best" or "better" to get you into shape. You can't do one exercise repeatedly and expect to get in "shape".
Running would improve your heart and lungs a lot more than a bike would. Sprinting a mile is even better, but thats tough.
But a bike would improve your leg strength and endurance a lot more than running will. Giving you more powerful legs. It does work your cardio too.
The key word here is variety. Bike one day, jog another, and do sprint drills once a week.

swimming is best imo
best of both worlds
if you have a place to swim you should to that instead

Running is better to burn calories and does more for any given period of time than recreational bike riding would. Running and other cardiovascular activities should be done everyday if possible, if you lift weights every other day is best. Lifting weights should be done every other day and never on repeating days. If your mother's advice was on weight lifting, she couldn't have been more wrong. Lifting when you are sore does not allow muscle to grow (which is done while it heals) and can damage muscle growth. I assume she is talking about lifting weights because you refer to it as helping to gain muscle, which running will not do. If you just run do it everyday even if you are a little sore to begin. If you both run and lift weights I suggest you switch off (and perhaps take off sunday). If you just lift weights I suggest you begin running (or another similar exercise) on off days. Biking will be less advantageous to you than running if you have a time frame for doing it.

But anyway running is the ultimate exercise. There is no such question as "Should i run or [paste anything here]" You should always run.

I edited my previous post a bit to make it easier to understand.
But all im trying to say is you have to have variety to be a complete athelete.

About lifting weights, yes its better to do it every day. Its just you dont do it on the same groups of muscles. Say monday you do bisceps, trisceps, tuesday back and chest, and so on. Some exercises should be done every day tho- such as pullups, pushups, situps.

Jesus Lord Almighty.
Bike riding itself WILL NOT slow down your quickness in running. LACK of running will slow down your quickness in running. Also overtraining. Do not run right after an exhausting bike ride or vice versa, it will only do you more damage.
Supplement with BOTH regularly and you will see results in your leg speed / strength.
Like I said before:
if you ONLY bike and NOT run, you will have stronger enduring legs but your cardio will not be as developped.
If you ONLY run, you will still have enduring leg muscles, however your heart and lungs will be much stronger. You will be less fatigued during basketball because your heart is able to pump more blood into your muscles.
Getting in "Shape" incorporates a variety of things, not just strong heart and lungs. Being in "Shape" means the whole fucking package.

you can ride a bike a lot longer than you can run because you arent pushing yourself as hard on wheels as on foot. Try riding a bike in 10th gear up a hill, that'll get you tired in about 30 seconds. Running is bad on your joints, namely the ankles but also the knees. Millions of people do it anyway, but i'd just assume ride a bike intensely than run. Plus it's a lot more fun if you ask me, more breeze, you go faster, more sights to see if you travel around the neighborhood, just more interesting than boring running.

Okay, I kind of skipped the previous posts, but maybe I'll not restate what they said.
First of all you need to look at what your actually trying to condition. Bike riding takes longer than running to start burning calories becuase your not involving your arms as you do when you run therefor running is better to lose weight. If your just trying to gain stamina or build leg muscles biking may be better. Also It depends if your trying to improve endurance or speed.
http://www.rossboxing.com/thegym.html is a boxing website that has alot of good advice on training methods. Maybe give this a look.

go for the biking cause u can go for as long as u want and then when u tired instead of walking down the hill u hang back and ride down plus u get further up hills are hard to do works out feet and shit

Yeah, just make sure to use the 7inch needles if you want to bulk, and for more aerobic go 4 inch.... god I hated that thread.

running is best for losing weight and cardio workouts, but if you are trying to get into shape, you won't be able to "sprint" a mile. I suggest you jog (comfortably) 5 miles or so a day with a cd player or something.
I believe swimming is great too, but the only turn off there is that it takes a lot of time to change, shower, and etc. plus pools are not always accessible. Not counting the actual swim workout, in the time that you change, dryoff, and shower, you would be almost done with your running workout.
The big advantage to biking is that you can travel longer distances, so its easy to fit biking into your schedule by biking to work or something like that, but I have a hard time believing that biking is better exercise than running or swimming, even lance armstrong didn't JUST bike for his training - as opposed to runners and swimmers who basically just run or swim unless they are injured (people training for short races might do some weights but still)

I run a mile 5 days a week, im very ripped

Swimming is better than running in terms of strenghtening the heart and improving lungs efficiency. But it's always best to do different exercises to get all of your body fit. I don't like running and I can't run really fast, but I ride a bike something like 20-30km a day and try to get as high average speed as possible. On a flat route 25km/h is not a problem. Although I don't like it I did some running last year and found out that riding a bike has actually improved my running - I tire less and run a bit faster

It seems everybody has given you the answers so...
I wish I could swim and had a pool to do it in without dishing out so much money. Seriously, it's such a good workout and it doesn't damage the joints as badly as running does. It works like every muscle in the body and is great for the lungs and heart. Man, I always want to learn how to swim better but I never go out and do it. Too expensive for me too... plus the whole driving out there, getting dressed and wet, just seems like too much of a hassel than just going out and running.

this thread is weird and so full of bullshit... i can't believe the word "coach" came up in the initial post, can't be a very good one.
nobody should use any advice given in this thread and the ppl who gave advice should ask somebody who knows what he's talking about.
tbh i haven't read all that was written so maybe one or two things were true but it's too hard to find them between all the bs.

biking antrenates alot more muscles that runing.. even more than swimming.. biking>all... (excluding sex )

No. Your muscles need at least 48 hours to recover if you are training to strengthen them. Even abs should be worked no more than once every other day. Once or twice a week is ideal for most muscle groups. They need time to heal, or you will just keep tearing them down.
Go to exrx.com for sample weightlifting templates. Running is primarily for cardio development, and should be done about every day (5-7 days a week) if you are a basketball player. I don't know how to suppliment whatever standard practices/workouts you have with your team (ask your coach during the season), but if you are just conditioning in the off-season, I would do heavy-lifting on 3-4 days a week (look for a 2, 3, or 4 day split on the site I mentioned - I like doing a 4-day push/pull routine for strength building), run 3-5 miles on the days you lift (less if you want to gain weight), and 5-7 on the days you don't. If you are new to heavy lifting, I'd start with a 3x10 routine (three sets of ten repititions of each exercise), and then switch to a 4x6 or 5x5 after a couple months. Take 1-2 minutes in between sets to focus on muscle growth (gaining weight/size), or 3-4 minutes to focus on gaining strength. Don't spend more than an hour in the gym. Consistency will give you the best results.
Also, make sure you are eating healthy. If you are still in middle/high school, it may be difficult, but it is best to eat 5-6 smaller meals a day than 2-3 big ones. Eat fruit for carbs, and keep track of your caloric intake, as well as your carbs/protein/fat. Take a good multi-vitamin to make sure you are getting everything you need.

I'm not trying to be mean or anything but I'm not looking for what's more "fun" but what will get me in shape more even if it's more difficult than the other(what I mean by getting in shape is being able to run back and forth full court and not be getting rdy for a heart attack after running it once fully back and forth).Usually after I run alooong time in basketball I am getting rdy to collapse and therefore my performance is gets so poor and it's not cuz I suck at basketball it's cuz I don't have the energy to keep up with me and keep playing. I breathe real hard and can't continue playing. So would going to the track every morning when it's cool and running or jogging or watever the mile help me? Plz I really need to know.

I haven't got the slighest idea what improves your stamina more of running or biking although I'm inclined to think that running will improve your running more than biking will, even if biking is also good and something you can do when the muscles you use more for running than biking are worn out of whatever
im just saying that you'll find training easier and stuff if you're doing something fun. personally I can't work out if I think it's boring. if you don't have that problem then good for you.

I jog 3 miles under 20 minutes every other day in gym.
