Athene to raise $1,000,000 for the children in the Horn of Africa, at time of this post, he has already gotten over $350,000 worth of donations. This is a 100 day marthon, with 74 days left from the date of this post (you can check timer on the right of the webpage) to raise the money. Notes: Athene is currently in his 8th day of fasting to raise awareness for this cause. 100% of the money goes directly to Save the Children, Athene has no contact with the money donated.

Saw the thread just now. Went through all the replies and have to say that I'm really happy to see that most of you are supporting the event. I also want to thank kellymilkies and everyone else for bringing up the topic.
Since I'm on a hungerstrike and have to rest it's easier to be interactive. I saw a lot of comments and although i won't be able to adress them all i hope this message will clear some things up. I have always been very activist oriented, even before "Athene" became known on the internet. The reason why most of my video's are cocky is because that is what created the required controversy to reach out and build up a following. I have always tried to use that to do good things, mainly around net neutrality but also towards raising awareness on other important isseus.
These two faces have been following me untill now and i don't blame anyone since that is how i got known in the first place. People that have followed me from the start and know what i did before this will know that i couldn't care less about fame succes or money. What put's a smile on my face when i wake up is the idea i can help others as i'm priviliged and fortunate, not because i'm special or chosen but because i got lucky with the event that turned me in who i'm now. I never really understand when people try to see greed in people, i made a lot with poker and wouldn't even know what to do with all that money, the reason why i started focussing on my youtube channel again. I have given a lot to charities before and am happy with living a very sober life.
This event is not about me, i have read multiple people saying that and that's what it is, i couldn't care less wether my name is under it or not. There is the ability to start your own sub fundrazer campaign. My initial goal was to have a gaming community event that reached high, something like project for awesome but for the gaming community. I didn't predict that my persona would have turned all the threads i read into athene flamewars. To me it was very simple, it's a charity and we can save children and make a statement. Gaming get's portrayed way to bad in the media look at all the Breivik crap headlines in the news lately.
I really beleave if the gaming community unites we can achive great things. Most of the 375k$ has been raised by a very small group tuning into the livestream everyday based on the statistics i have. I'm confident we would have reached one million already if everyone would reach and help out. The entire Kony debacle was what motivated me, not to jump the bandwagon but because i knew it would make charities look bad and condition people to not give a damn, while our innitial reaction was to actually care.
This operation is a very well researshed cause, a very efficient charity and with donations being doubled, double effective then most of our donations.
I'm sorry for the wall of text and the spelling mistakes but i wanted to make sure that i answered most of the points brought up in this thread since i don't know how much i'll be able to reply due to the stressfull shedule i'm in. Most donation 95%+ are done due to the livestream show and it drains all my time and energy.
Hope this clears things up, and again a big thanks to the starcraft community for helping out. If i'm able to be of any help i'll make sure to do so.
"Millions of people, most of them innocent children, are at risk in the Horn of Africa due to the worst hunger crisis in 60 years. The Internet has come to a point where when we simply collectively reach out for what we think is right, real change often follows.
You can join Operation ShareCraft and add your own voice to the campaign. I can't raise one million dollars on my own, but together we can."

About the Horn of Africa: The Horn of Africa is a peninsula in East of Africa and is inhabited by roughly 100 million people. There has been an on-going drought coupled with conflict in Somalia, affecting over 13 million people.Millions of people are requiring food assistance. Since 2011, many non-profit organisations have been continuously helping out with the food crisis that has been happening there. Starvation is currently the number 1 risk to health there.
Why we should contribute: There is never a why when it comes to Charity, it doesn't matter if you are contributing $100 or $1. Every dollar counts.
TeamLiquid's contribution: Many other gamers have already contributed to Athene's cause. I have started one to track the contribution of TeamLiquid's members to help out with Operation Sharecraft over here: http://fundrazr.com/challenges/campaigns/53Bma
What has been done by Athene and other gamers so far: Athene has currently done a few notable things for this particular cause. He and many other fellow gamers have gone on a hunger strike and water fasting "marathon". He himself have already contributed a generous amount of his own money for OpSharecraft.
Another fellow supporter. Per Age Kristiseter, has pledged to match every dollar up to $20,000. So far, his contribution is $22,000 personally, with many people continuing to donate to his dedication to OpSharecraft.
Other things you can do to help: Spread the word, the links, share it on , have a page? - Make a video about it. Love streaming? Include a link to http://opsharecraft.com at the corner of your screen or on your overlays Have a Steam account and spend a lot of time playing games on it? Change your steam name to opsharecraft.com Just letting people know about this is helping.

While this is a great cause and i would encourage people to join in, hunger striking (and more importantly water fasting) are actually very dangerous to do for even relatively short amounts of time. While it might sound good to "not eat and drink" while doing a 24 hours stream marathon or something, every now and then you hear about those people who "died playing video games" after 24 hours/48 hours of non stop playing. This i invariably because they were so foccussed on the game that they didn't eat or drink. While thats obviously not the normal response of the human body, encouraging someone to follow that isn't really a good idea.
Don't really like him as a person but it's noble of him to try this (assuming he's really using the money right unlike the last viral campaign).
Though to be honest the cause isn't something that helps a lot. I contribute to DWB but the hunger crises in the Horn of Africa are not due to a lack of aid or food, but due to the power vacuum (especially in somalia) and warlords fighting over it. Change won't come until the region's power struggles end first, and any aid given until that point is really just a bandaid fix.

Hi guys, this is not about me, but about the children of Africa. It gives us a chance to help other people. Please do not misunderstand that anyone involved in this project is gaining anything in anyway. What we are gaining is an experience in life to help starving children, genuine people who need helping. Children who doesn't know what GSL or even a computer is. There are many many people involved in this project,Athene was the one who started it, and behind it, many other passionate individuals.
Sorry if it causes any drama. My intention was purely to raise awareness for this Charity. I wish I had such a brave vision to raise $1million for charity. I have never thought about doing it, neither have many other people because probably "i think I cant do it."
Once again, it's not about me, or athene. This is to help children who are starving everyday.
Thank you.

I am arguing that this is legit and I support your thread and this entire project/charity (even though both mine and some other guys thread about this was closed.) However I hope yours stay open because you are more "famous" within this community.
Wow I'm really saddened by all the TL people who think every thread with Athene should be closed, despite his intentions being good. It's pretty crazy how someone who gives his whole life to gaming and he is rejected by the gaming community.
But by doing this, it shows that with collaborative effort, the gaming community can be incredibly passionate and generous, not something that gamers are generalised as.

This is a good decision. While I personally dislike Athene, if he wants to raise money for charity, his heart is in the right place and he should be supported.
I mean no offence to Athene and the other companies that raise money for the poor but i rather hand my money directly on the hand of the person that really needs it.
The world is to corrupt to handle money fair.I will never know if all the money donated to the company was in the end sent to the people who need it.
In no means am i saying that i dont want to help the poor, i just dont trust people with money.
Pardon for asking, but how is Athene going to distribute the money to the Horn of Africa safely? He probably mentioned it in one of those videos, but I seem to have missed it.
I was wondering as that region is notoriously unstable and dangerous for many NGOs to try and intervene in, and much of the money that goes into those countries disappears.

Gonna be watching Vodka for old times sake
He's in character but plenty of his fanboys actually believe that he's legit. Hell, when he had Kiwikaki power an "Athenewins" SC2 account, he insisted multiple times that it was actually him, and at least once even said that it wasn't Kiwikaki. He directly addresses the accusations that are true, and then his fanboys are like "omg Athenes actually has the innate talent to go 80-2 in SC2 without any prior knowledge of the game whatsoever".
Using his popularity to raise money is incredibly awesome of him, but I think his little act is deceitful. So I'll compartmentalize him in two parts - his awful act and his great actions.
Coming from someone who had a large population of Somalians at his high school, I can't tell you how cool this is. They're going to be so surprised to hear a bunch of nerds are trying to raise money for the family they left behind.
I don't trust him, but if every dollar really goes to the fund and it's spent for the children then it's fantastic job. Both from his initiative and the fanbase he built and people who actually support the idea.

Athene doesn't get the money, it goes as a donation straight to 'Save the children', which is an internationally recognized NGO with a good reputation, which when last audited was found to use 93% of total donations for actual program costs, with about 7% overhead spending (which is excellent for an NGO). That said, there is no guarantee the money will actually go to the Horn of Africa, because individual donations do not get tracked by NGO's. It might go to the Horn of Africa, it might go to another poverty stricken area.
I know Athene puts on his character, but he really is a great guy. Everything I've seen out of him has been using his fame to help out others. I can't wait to see what his future beholds.
Good luck and congrats on your current progress Athene! What you are doing is a really respectable, kindhearted thing to do! Furthermore, it puts a more positive light on us gamers!

It might go to the Horn of Africa, it might go to another poverty stricken area.
So, did he raise $350k, or the whole organization raised $350k? Did the gaming community donate $350k, or the whole world donated $350k?

I was wondering as that region is notoriously unstable and dangerous for many NGOs to try and intervene in, and much of the money that goes into those countries disappears.

basically the whole gaming community, and a few who just heared of it, and donated aswell. But he's also trying to spread the word, to get more attention to this problem, so not only the gaming community will be donating, but others aswell.
Also Universal is doubling every donation that is comming in if im correct.

Gaming community raised 175K and DC comics (who are heading this campaign named "we can be heroes") will match all donations.

Yes
It's like donating money to give a drug addict another hit. It may help them for a little while but it doesn't solve the problem or prevent the eventual downfall that will happen.
Africa has to fix their own problems, which will most likely involve internal war with their governments..

Its not as simple as safeascheese claims it to be. There have been quite a few instances where aid has been terribly unsuccesful and even degenerative, but the opposite is also true. Especially short term aid during emergencies/crises has been proven to be highly effective. For example, famines can be fought very effectively and at relatively low cost, while trying to set up a national healthcare system is much harder and less effective.
Foreign aid isn't a black/white, good/evil situation. It's much more complicated than that, and the people claiming otherwise do so for political or ideological purposes.
nigeria now over has 170 million people and 300 million in 25 years, and it's because of western aid. one day, we can't afford to feed them and then we're gonna see a very brutal massacre that's caused by people with good intentions.
either help them all the way (teaching them agriculture) or don't help them at all.
This is such a superficial cause. All this kinda stuff does is allow for richer classes to feel good about themselves for a couple of days, without needing to sacrifice much. Throwing money at Africa has not worked for the past 70 years; and its not going to change today.
On April 22 2012 05:45 svi wrote: throwing money at africans is very irresponsible.

Don't want to derail the thread but I can't help myself calling bs on this one. So now we are going to blame the west for actually giving aid? I know it's not as simple as that but blaming the world for Africa's over population just seems like a load of crap.
if you look at the top 50 countries with the highest population growths, then you'll see that most of them are in africa.
what do you think will happen to africa, 30 years from now, when they'll have over 2 billion people? what happens when the west can't afford to give them aid 30 years from now?
what will happen will be violent than ww2. that are many countries in africa that only exists because of western handouts. when that ends, we will see cannibalism.
but the people staying so poor overthere, is because of the west aswell ofcourse. you want all you stuff as cheap as possible aswell. Alot of Goverments are corrupt etc, but the west doesn't give a f*ck, because there isn't anything to win there. But if there was a shitload of oil somewhere, suddenly the west cares, and takes action.
I've also heard that african countries that didn't receive aid from europe grew faster and became generally a stronger country compared to the ones that received aid from UN/US.
The negativity in this thread is straight up retarded and ignorant, africa really can't help itself, its a desolate wasteland with really no sources of good dirt for fields or fresh water supply, why do u guys think such immoral and chaos things run a muck there? besides even if athene does dip in on the money your still helping the kids in africa by feeding them! its not like hes just gonna take all the money and run to a desolate part of the world and live like a hermit -_- in other words stop being so damn negative and support this movement, or your an asshole...
How can you guys post such ignorance in good conscious? You have no fucking idea what you're talking about, yet you feel you can make absolute statements on the effectiveness of this charity in Africa?
Save The Children does not just gather money and throw it at local leaders, or individuals in these regions as some ignorant, inconsiderate posters here seem to be implying. Charities do NOT work this way. The money is to support programs which help protect children from explotation and offer them education/healthcare. They also have more long-term recovery programs. This stuff actually does help and I wish you wouldn't carelessly spread your misinformation in threads like this.
Good job being direct and forward, but also for having a great perspective. It is for a great cause, so it's great to see someone do it so wholeheartedly. Good luck.
Athene is one of the most confusing personas I've ever seen... There isn't even a wikipedia about him, if i recall he's done a lot of bizzare things in his life even outside of gaming. Eitherway this seems to be a straight up cause and keeping tabs on him lately he's doing a lot of good overall, like giving away his sponsorship money to the community. Best wishes to Athene and the children in africa.
I remember when Athene first started to appear with his character. Unfortunately, things have been complicated and such over the years, and he's made a lot of people upset over his antics. Some would say it's justified, and other people just simply don't have a clue. All that said, great cause, and hopefully everyone gets a chance to contribute!

Hunger strike and poker just made athene 20% more interesting. Still skeptical though

I'd be cautious at looking at that from a purely causation point of view. Some of the countries that receive aid in that way get it because they need it, while obviously those that don't probably didn't need it (as much) in the first place.
Aid is a tricky thing, some have been harmful while others haven't, and I'll be honest and say that I haven't read up what this involves. But I'll just say that I wish Athene the best of luck in this and hope it works well.
I'm sorry to say this, but sadly, donating 1 million dollar to Save the Children / Rädda barnen isn't as effective as it could've been. I know it's not easy to invest 1 million dollar yourself with your own hands/help from others, but Save the Children will quite obviously take their piece of the cake.
Save the Children has been abusing the money before, and it's been in the newspaper a lot here in Sweden. But best of luck, and it's still a very nice idea by Athene, and it's working out.
I would consider donating if athene explains what his university of gaming was about, charging people $1,000 EU seemed like a big scam to me, also I doubt it was a troll because it seemed like they had put a lot of time in it and had created a website with application page and everything.
It's funny how so many people really do think that Athene is really how he acts in his "old school videos" i will just clear it up for you people out there that do think that, that Athene is just a character if you watch his livestream you do realise that. And for the people that do think that Athene is just scamming a bunch of people. No, the money goes straight to save the children to children in the horn of Africa and it has been confirmed, do some research before you post. But it's also really cool that most people here seems to support it!

For the lucky few who did play with him, and got to know him a bit better then the ordinary youtube films he is actually a smart guy who does allot for different people.
He has good vibe but i cannot help but think the money will eventually again go to keep tyrannical dictators in power over a frustrated and unwilling populace.
I never liked Athene, ever since he stepped into the spotlight of the gaming community. But this is real... and I hate to say it but my opinion of him changed a little...

Culture is a arguably a larger factor than religion, and that derives from the local situation. Religion largely gets ignored on issues where its views conflict with existing practices.
Infant mortality and lack of industrialisation have a huge impact on the birthrate in impoverished rural areas. Lack of industrialisation means that more hands are needed to perform the necessary work, and more children is the easiest and cheapest way to get that. High infant mortality means that more babies are needed to 'guarantee' enough will survive. The high birth rate needed to ensure the short term survival of individual families then worsens the problems which lead to it. Vicious cycle.
I can't say i am a huge fan of Athene. And i really enjoyed the few times i managed to kill him/corpse camp him in WoW (stormscale eu). But this is an amazing cause which deserves nothing less than my complete respect. Good luck Athene!
Athene is really amazing man. I remember tuning into his stream when he helped that girl raise money for a wheel chair. Good luck Athene. Bless your epic soul

He is well over 500k now after 40 days, I'd say he is doing fine.
CBA doing my homework on this organization, but hopefully it's actually one not taking the lion's share for itself and most of the rest to local dictators, directly or indirectly. Sadly, knowing several people working at various places in the hierarchies of some of those organizations, it's crystal clear that the vast majority of the secular organizations are at best inefficient, at worst scams, with various degrees of corruption and bribery. Even when the money actually ends up where it should, locals sadly get robbed by local thugs or the dictators' men at arms anyway. And the religious charities (every one I know about anyway) do religious endoctrination first, and feeding second. Not to say giving to african charities is a bad thing in theory, but please do your research before, and give to the safest / most proven charities (those involving young european/american volunteers on the premises usually). That said, GL to Athene.
The fact that kellymilkies, who is an individual who lost the respect of most of the community for several reasons (poor casting being the least of them), is promoting this is also another "meh" factor imho.
This is a great cause and I really like that Athene decided to do some good with his huge fanbase, however this kinda irks me the same way as Bono or Madonna.
Yes, off course they do a lot of good, but it's still a cry for attention from a guy that had infinite attempts at getting more attention. Of course it's much better than his usual shennanigans like his "I'm the best at starcraft 2 because I had Kiwikaki get my account to nr1 GM" and his "I made a video where I explain my discovery of secrets of universe and physics even tho I have no physics or math education". Also it dosent help that this is being posted by Kellymilkies who had a similar trackrecord of jumping on the gaming bandwagon that got her the most internet attention, right now this is it.
I herd of this charity before, but I much rather donate directly to a cause that I think is worth it than being guilted by an internet attention seeker trying to kill him self by not eating.
How can we be sure he will give the money to them, instead of taking it himself? I know athene from wow, and he was trolling a lot back then, so I wouldn't trust him with $1,000,000.
When I first heard of Athene I kind of hated him, but after seeing that video where he got people to donate money for that girl's wheelchair, I've had nothing but respect for him. This just makes him cooler in my eyes.

The money is donated directly to SaveTheChildren. The OpSharecraft link just lets them keep track of donations related to the project, it doesn't mean that Athene ever has even the opportunity to touch the money. SaveTheChildren has confirmed this.

There is a Q&A with the people from save the children, which shows everything is legit, or failing that actually watching any given stream and seeing how humble he is about the whole thing. I don't know about others but I like to do my research BEFORE complaining about them, guess thats makes me a minority on the internet
Here's an idea for a donation to show if you are truly selfless - instead of buying Diablo 3 when it comes out, send that money to buy food and water for a child in Africa. It's something I'm thinking about... Also the fact that my exams are coming up so it will be a challenge to my self-restraint.
Why waste your money on something like this? Why "feed the kids" now so they can starve next year? Why expose a million dollars to bureaucratic inefficiency and corruption?
Why not invest that million dollars into projects that actually have return, have the potential to create jobs, and have the potential to help everyone permanently rather than temporarily?

Then give us a link to a project that does this, does so reliably, and of which we are certain it is not corrupted.
Edit: Save The Children scores very high on reliability by the way. There are organisations who monitor other charity funds to see where the money goes, you can google it.

I am beyond sad every time when I see that for donation only option I have is Paypal... which my country doesn't have (yeah, there are countries that can't use Paypal by any means and it's depressing).
Every 1$ counts and I hope SC community will chip in, 1$ is basically NOTHING for every single one of you.

There was a story I saw on reddit like a month ago about a man who lived for a year without eating he started at like 450 pounds and lived off vitamins and water. As long as one stays hydrated with water they can live for a long time without food. He mainly fasted because he wanted to raise attention for his cause.

There's plenty of people who fasted for more than a month. Your body starts "eating" your fat reserves and muscles. Athene also made it a lot easier for himself since he drank fruit juice and not just water.

One pound of body fat can be used for 3500 calories, which is quite a bit more than the average person needs in a day.

All of his fans and attention is now completely validated and a good thing in my book. It's amazing to see someone do good with their fame, instead of simply wallowing in the attention. Good on Athene.

I respect that, I just don't understand why you have to act like a cunt to get any recognition these days - would this have been possible without the faux-progamer bullshit? Probably not ... Which is a bit sad really. :\
Although I don't find him that much original(I think he is copy of Jeremy from Pure Pwnage), my respect for this guy went up. I hope this is legit, and he is collecting money with non-profitable secular organization(something similar like Doctors without Borders).

Good luck Athene.
All the donations go directly to Save the Children, and using links from Athene's site just tells them where you came from. It helps them to see how effective different fundraisers are. Save the Children have confirmed that it is legit.
Hopefully Athene goes through the appropriate channels to get the money where it needs to go. So much "aid" money ends up in the hands of militias or corrupt fucks with Swiss bank accounts. Don't fuck this up, Athene, because it's a good deed when done right.
