Disney buying LucasFilms just.... makes sense. This means all the Indiana Jones and Star Wars merchandise they've been selling for years will likely make a larger profit due to them owning the rights. I have doubts that the 7th movie will be awesome, but they made an entire Pirates of the Caribbean quadrilogy out of a theme park ride. They're some creative mofo's. Disney taking over the entertainment industry... one expansion at a time. <insert adorable Mickey chuckle>

Yes, you can argue that the tech was new, but everyone is crying about ruining the triology when Yodais no longer a puppet but a 3d model yes it was. The story was new. The style and setting was new. and it wasn't really that much new tech that made it (like special effects) possible it was just smart and creative model making and scenery etc. and semi SF? in what way? what had been full SF? or wait, are you talking about ep1? ,,phantom menace or whatever.

The prequel trilogy, though lots of action, was too much for me. I hope they draw from the books... + Show Spoiler + Thrawn trilogy would be good, but they would first have to explore the New Republic

I gotta agree with Zack, the prequels were great in their own right, especially Sith. Top-notch music, beautiful scenery, and Anakin wasn't that bad (but Lucas's lines were, I have to concede that one). Palpatine's acting was great, Obi-Wan's was pretty good. Anyways, seven. The thing is - all six movies set a pretty high bar for the Star Wars series. That's part of it. If everyone tells you a movie's shit and you see it and it's not too bad, you'll like it. If everyone begs you to watch it and it's not too bad, you won't. The movie didn't live up to its hype. This is why it pisses me off when people say "The prequels wouldn't be successful as a standalone series." No. You're wrong. Go away. The prequels weren't as good as the originals but they were still pretty damn good, just not good enough to live to the hype of the original trilogy and seeing a fourth Star Wars movie with all that great stuff plus special effects plus the impossibility of making a prequel. The prequels probably lowered the bar a little. That's a start. Then you have the impossible factor dropped. That's also a thing. We don't even know who the characters will be, which means Disney gets two years to toss around ideas (or just pull something out of their asses). Hopefully, episode seven should receive a warmer welcome than episode one. Hopefully.

There's already too much material. Just halt all star XXXX stuff for a few decades until the copyright and the writers are ripe enough. Push SF more into Kubrick's direction and don't even try any prequel or book adaptation any more. Lol if Kubrick had done Star Wars then it would have been pretty similar (it was a movie in two very distinct acts) but everyone would have died trying to blow up the Death Star at the end.

I generally agree with the Plinkett reviews regarding the prequels but I think Attack of the Clones was very close to being a good movie, it just focused too much on a bad love story and got tangled in bad plot tangents. I know a lot of people have heard of The Phantom Edit, but imo Phantom Menace was terrible and unsalvagable. Meanwhile the Ep 2 re-edit, Attack of The Phantom, was actually pretty damn good and made me like the movie. He didn't do a re-edit of Ep 3 but I think that while Phantom Menace is the worst thing ever, Ep 2 and 3 were just poorly polished and could have been really good.

And then I didn't care. But the last viewing, I think why he's so bad is he's completely un-necessary. He doesn't do anything. The only thing he contributes is getting them to the underwater city (which could've been circumvented if the Trade Federation were smart and didn't land on the opposite side of the planet to the capital they wanted to conquer (and then instead spend some time filming the futile resistance against the invasion force.) And then he conjures up the Gungam army. And that's it. Beyond that he's there to mug for the camera. For storytelling purposes, there are far more elegant solutions to both of those two roles he fulfilled. Part of the problem with the big pay off is it's so un-focused. Too many battles. Cut the Gungan battle and suddenly you have more time for the dog fight, the Queen's commandos, (and maybe show more of the outside battle with the security forces.) Lightsaber fight is already awesome. In addition, movies are already short, so you take out Jar Jar, you have more screen time for everyone else. edit. Haha. That's a quick conversion.

Honestly, I thought the Gungan battle had some of the best art direction in any of the movies; the shiny metallic siege engines and hurlers and the strange charged blue spheres seemed pretty awesome when I first saw the movie, and I still like 'em. I'm not sure about the justification behind the Gungans having anti-robot heavy weapons tech, but I digress.
