Wow, shots fired, lol. I always thought JJ Abrams was generally regarded as a solid, if overhyped, director. Wasn't expecting to see so much rage. Out of curiosity, who are some directors people were hoping to see?
Edit: my vote would be for Kevin Smith
Why Kevin Smith of all people? Maybe he's a fellow nerd, but having seen Jay and Silent Bob, I can't even imagine why his style of film-making would at all gell with any of the Star Wars films.

you clearly dont read movie reviews on teamliquid LOL. Its the most hipster movie review site on the planet.
Thats what he gets for making Star Trek all cool and popular. Maybe people should remember that Star Wars is a popcorn movie, with the 2nd highest domestic gross of all time (adjusted for inflation), that is popular with a wide and diverse group of people. It was the Transformers film of the 1970s. If JJ Abrams makes a fun adventure film in the vein of the classic Star Wars (and the new Star Trek) he wont disappoint, and he knows how to make good films.
I hope he does for Star Wars what he did for Star Trek, introducing time travel that will allow an old Luke to go back in time and teach a young Han Solo how to fly or Chewbacka how to build a piece of technology 100 years ahead of its time so they can nuke the Emperor or something.

yes because time travel was so far out and unexpected for star trek

it could be entertaining, and i like entertainment. If it's not, then this will not affect my life negatively, so it's a win-neutral scenario for me... and pretty much anyone else. Why are you all so flustered -_-'
JJ? I guess that's a safe choice. I was hoping for someone like Paul Thomas Anderson or Nicolas Winding Refn, but I guess they wouldn't go for something like Star Wars. I'm not really that interested in the new trilogy to be honest. I think the original told all that needed to be told, and the prequels told all that perhaps didn't. This is primarily to make easy cash from an established and beloved franchise, which I don't mind that much. If the films turn out to be entertaining, who cares why it was made, right? I just wish the makers could have the creative freedom to take the SW universe to new and interesting places. But we all know the studio will keep things safe and suitable for children, because that's where the big money lies.
Experience tells us that when forced between artistic direction and the bottomline, producers (who are actually the last word in filmmaking), will unabashedly go for the bottomline any day. Hence I don't expect this new trilogy to go somewhere intellectually stimulating. But will I watch it? Heck yes, if only for the fun of it.

Hehe, that mostly was a joke based on this talk by Kevin Smith (discussing writing a script for Superman). But, he's a big Star Wars fan and would certainly make sure that the movie didn't disappoint the hard core fans.
Edit: if you don't want to watch the 20 min talk, Kevin Smith rants about dumb stuff in the movie industry like adding characters to sell toys or producers having no idea about the franchise.
