I think Anand is mentally blocked vs Carlsen. He won't be the one to take it away from him

I think the general issue is the contrast of event itself being a huge 20-day battle of great minds over long and demanding games while the production remains pretty plain and amateurish in many places.

He won't be the one to take it away from him Well he's an inferior player to Carlsen and it's unlikely he will ever surpass Carlsen given their respective ages. That's probably a bigger problem for Vishy than any supposed mental block.

It kind of feels like the whole event could be made much more spectator friendly with a bit more effort. Obviously 4+ hr matches still aren't for everyone, but it still feels like there's a lot of wasted potential. I thought it was perfect, except for the problems with the stream in the second half of the match. There's an obvious question of target audience: from a chess point of view any eye candy that does not help with discussion variations is a distraction. The best I can think of is having multiple streams targeting different audiences.

The best I can think of is having multiple streams targeting different audiences. We have that in Norway. There are at least three norwegian streams with different approaches by some of the major news outlets. I guess we are spoiled. They have like a full studio with people in a cool web app thingie where they have stockfish/houdini + live commentary, live feed, twitter feed and some other stuff as well.

You're right, but you have to understand that marketing in chess is still very much in its infancy. For most tournaments, you'll be glad if you get a horribly pixelated live stream. Commentary from the venue or real life footage is pretty much exclusive to candidates tournaments and WC matches. In that sense, what they did this year is a definite step forward.

The exchange sacrifice was just unnecessary. I guess that's one component of why Carlsen is better, he just doesn't make those... misevaluations.
