I feel like the Latin American magical realism authors get more of a pass than they should for some of the really sick shit that they stick in their books. No shortage of incest, bestiality, rape, and other perversions in those works. I'm not entirely sure why so many high school students are forced to read those works as opposed to the plethora of worthy alternatives out there. Titillation reigns supreme, I guess.

I always find comforting to read something really really really dumb and ignorant from someone I otherwise really disagree with.
Dismissing an artist because there are immoral stuff in his work is about as stupid as it gets. Let's look at some great artist that you might not know, or consider "supreme titilliation":
Caravaggio is one of the greatest painters to have ever lived, his painting are cruel, often gory when they don't describe lust and homoerotism. Shakespeare is the one greatest dramatic author, he is not scared of having a girls having both hands and tongue cut so that she cannot tell who is the one who raped her, or children being served baked for supper (enjoy the freak show); Wagner's operas, the greatest to have been written, are almost exclusively about sex, adultery and occasionally incest etc etc etc...
But maybe High School Students shouldn't read Shakespeare, should never look at a Caravaggio or listen to a Wagner Opera. They could become smart, free minded, sensitive people, and that would really be bad some people and some ideas.
You are better at repeating Sarah Palin and Paul Ryan Fox news stuff, I would avoid the whole literature thing.
Oh and RIP Marquez. One of the great artists of our time is gone.
