Well... so even before the week begins Valve and HTC have announced their own VR headset finally. The gist is:- A 1,200 by 1,080 pixel screen in front of each eye, with refresh rates of a blistering 90 frames per second. Apparently Valve have also solved the jitter issues as well.
- Comes with a gyrosensor, accelerometer, and laser position sensor combine to precisely track the rotation of your head on both axes to an accuracy of 1/10th of a degree, allowing you to look around the virtual environment naturally
- Custom controller options
- A Developer Edition sometime in Spring, and
- The ACTUAL THING by December
I am mildly intrigued...

I wonder if there are any detrimental effects to having such bright light so close to your eyes. Wouldn't this cause focussing issues for your eyes if over used?

I'm wondering if the camera/s? on front would be able to show the wearer what's happening in the actual room you are in, A PiP feature would be nice. So if someone needed to say check on their kid while using it (or grab a drink) they wouldn't necessarily need to remove the headset?
I also wonder what they are doing to power these things?

There are cables. So you are not really walking around the house wearing those. They also should be pretty simple to remove if you need to, a camera seems a bit unnecessary.
The controller thing could be interesting. Time to revive the power glove.

Well honestly I'm more curious for my situational awareness, I don't like the idea of basically wearing a blind fold and ear bud/noise cancelling headphones. Anything you can't smell or feel happening, you would be pretty oblivious to (even more so than in front of you monitor).

Michael Abrash has been busy. We will see if his kung-fu is better than Mr. Zuckerbergs.

Well, I think I know what self indulgent gift I will buy myself next Christmas

Will the 3-4 serious ones being developed right now all work on the same games? Or are we going away from plug and play?

Lenses are used to focus the light in such a way that your eyes dont need to accomodate (focused to the infinite) so tjat shouldn't be an issue. I'm guessing valve is a bit worried about oculus developing a marcketplace and getting a monopoly on the VR market, so they don't want to depend on oculus exclusively, similarly to what they've been doing with their steam machines, linux and windows' marketplace.

That thing looks so incredibly uncomfortable to wear. It looks way too front heavy to be good for your neck.

That's the point of VR though

What's with the VR hype, is it the 90's again?

Nice, hopefully this gives Oculus a kick in the butt to release something, at least a new DevKit!

This is something that is aimed at a very small niche crowd. Gaming has become a social phenomenon to many people. Wearing a VR headset is almost a worse version of locking yourself inside your room to play video games.

Nothing to see here; just Valve stealing ideas from Nintendo.
