England isn't part of Schengen. You need a passport there. They are a port of EU though. Fun as it is...

I went through the Lufthansa Terminal in Munich last week. Baggage drop-off is automated, and boarding is also automated, both with code scanners, never had to show ID.

Schengen was stupid in the first place. You have to carry a personal id card or a passport with yourself ANYHOW if you travel outside your home country so why the heck should flying not require a passport anyway? I fly a lot in Schengen, most times do not use/show my passport/ID card (if i check-in online). anyway, what is the connection between this catastrophe and passengers having passports with them? You need to carry a passport/ID card with you at all times. It's European law. That's not what i said, isn't it? Since i cant read german, does the article say I have to carry passport or any identity card? these are different as you know. If its any form of identitification document - then this article has 0 sense. if your PASSPORT is now required, then its a change and a fucking stupid one. Why is it stupid if YOU HAVE TO carry one with you anyway? Has humanity become seriously so lazy that they can't even take out a passport from their luggage nowdays? It's too much work or what?
i could give the question right back to you, why do you need a passport when you are required to carry an id anyway?

can you show me where it says that even if you have an identity card, you still must carry your passport (in addition to ID card) when travelling on domestic/schengen flights? Because in reality (and my 50+ flights per year) its not the case.
EDIT: also its not about me being lazy, dude, its about a) consistent rules for all and b) lazyness of the airline workers/airport security. Nothing wrong to show necessary documents when needed, the problem here is that you say - you must, while in reality nobody checks them. Like NEVER, unless you go abroad.

anyway, what is the connection between this catastrophe and passengers having passports with them?
The way I understood it, the reasoning had been that, immediately after the crash, no one knew who exactly was on that flight. With passport checks, they would have known. It did not make too much sense to me, though.

But i am actually quite baffled that airlanes don't check IDs. We always did it.

Wow, thanks. This is beyond understanding knowing that everything is digital these days. One possible explanation is that if they considered terrorist attack, then not having a mandatory passport check potentially brings risk of passengers with fake names on board...

It does not matter if you are on a flight or not. YOU NEED TO CARRY A PASSPORT IF YOU GO OUTSIDE YOUR COUNTRY. No matter if it is by FOOT, by CAR, by TRAIN or by PLANE. It is the law.

No, sharkie, if you are a citizen of one of the Schengen member states an identity card is all you need. You can leave your passport at home when travelling inside the Schengen area.
|
Yeah and it doesnt end at Shangen some countries inside the EU that are not part of Shangen have bilateral treties with other EU countries allowing their citiziens to cross border only with ID (I visited UK and Croatia this way).
Edit: I just cheked and there is 48 countries (including some French/Portugal foreign territories) that i as polish citizen can visit without passport.

dude, i'm not going to argue, but i will ask once again, please, give us the source of your statements. You seem to be angry about something only you alone know. Btw anger can come along with depression, and God knows what's next.

You either need a passport or a nationel ID-card within schengen. The ID-card must be a specific type though, you can't use all ID card you can use within your own country necessarily. Like I can't use my own swedish drivers license for such purpose, I have to either get a passport or the nationel ID-card. Most just get the passport since the ID card is worthless outside of EU and within Sweden the drivers license is enough for everything.

When I did Paris -> Rome I'm pretty sure people could show only a french national ID card.

I think you can get a different version of the drivers license that actually is valid. You need to ask for it though, the default isn't usable.

I was strictly referring to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_identity_cards_in_the_European_Economic_Area
also from there: As an alternative to presenting a passport, EEA and Swiss citizens are entitled to use a valid national identity card as a travel document to exercise their right of free movement in the European Economic Area and Switzerland without a visa.

I can't say anything other than the fact that this GermanWings disaster was both the fault of Lubitz and Lufthansa.
I'm not familiar with airline employment laws, but allowing a known mentally ill man to co-pilot a passenger plane with 150 people should not be tolerated.

I think the point is that you don't have to show a passport, but you do have to prove you are a citizen of a country that doesn't have to show passport. So, as mentioned above, a Swedish driving licence isn't enough as it isn't proof of citizenship, even though it is proof of ID. So in practice most swedes have to bring their passport, as they mostly use the driving licence for ID within Sweden. I guess it makes sense.
