I like this idea.

This does not mean TL merged with CR. CR is sponsoring TL.

It's mostly a streaming service for Japanese Anime and you can also read some Manga as well. With the 1-month free subscription you will have 1080p stream access to any of the shows that they offer, and there will be no ads. Nothing is changing afaik. CR is just a new sponsor they will presumably give us money for advertising their service

Exactly. I don't even watch anime and I know this. I'm not sure partnering with these guys is a good idea professionally. I hope you're being sarcastic. If you don't watch anime, you're working with some very dubious secondhand information. Crunchy does a pretty damn good job with their subs considering the time frame they have to work with (they typically only have a few hours between when they get the RAWs and when their simulcasts go up). Apart from a few minor translation or localization issues, their subs are pretty high quality. Also, they just made a deal with their primary business rival Funimation through which they get the licenses to most of Funi's subtitled catalog, and to most subtitled simulcasts moving forward, so they've just gained almost a monopoly on subtitled anime. Seems like a pretty great idea to partner with them professionally at the moment. Crunchy has improved a lot over the years. They used to be pretty bad but are good for what they do now. The only thing I dislike is the white subtitles with almost no border/shadow that in some bright series are hard to read. CR's subbing quality has gone from laughable to not-really-tolerable (passable on their best days, which means their Rozen Maiden team isn't working on it). For an organization that hires professionals, they're still worse than what fansubbing was five years ago. Good thing for them that fansubbing is essentially dead now.

To me you either you make a funny announcement where you know some people will whine or you make sure there's absolutely no misconceptions. You did the first thing (which I like) but i dont get how you can be surprised by some of the community reaction then. I think people are just misunderstanding the wording with "fusion". It was a joke referencing what is seemingly an obvious anime meme, but the confusion is understandable--hard to determine this when you are on the inside. Crunchyroll sponsors TL would be more clear, but less topical and fun. There is a trade off, you're right. Hopefully it's more clear now though! I thought they would actually merge. With myanimelist having entered the streaming business some time ago, it wasn't unthinkable. Seeing all the Japanese reading manga in the subway got me thinking about watching some anime when I'm back home. I'll definitely check this out So you say it's too late to start with One Piece? What's other "must see" that is more accessible? Don't watch One Piece, unless you're maybe 15 years old, then you might enjoy it (especially if you haven't watched better anime first). It's a waste of time anime. For anime, I suggest (watch all subbed): - Berserk (dark fantasy, more mature, cult anime. watch the old version, not the new "movies") - Neon Genesis Evangelion (cult, watch the old series. there are 2 endings, don't remember which one is better to watch first) - Golden Boy (comedy, only 6 episodes, watch the dubbed version, this is one of the rare dubs that's actually better than the japanese voices) - Akira (anime movie, dystopian future, cult anime) - Hellsing (old one, the new is also not bad) - Cowboy Bebop (more mature than most anime) etc. Nice to see this partnership! Can agree with that, though, Golden Buy is more for perverted people who like comedy. :D Nah, I don't care about the perverted stuff in it. Study Study Study! Let's get some things straight first. Are you serious? You're saying it isn't aimed at 15 year olds? Get a grip. It might have evolved some, but it certainly did start as a young teenager anime, and probably still is. I bet if you checked its demographics, it'd be mostly people under 20. I'm not saying some adults can't enjoy it, though. I can understand the bias since it's your first anime, but if you haven't seen any anime that comes even close, you need either a reality check, or to watch more and deverse anime. Please.
THAT'S why it's popular, not because of its quality (even though the quality isn't bad). I've watched it because of all the hype; then when I wanted to drop it, I watched some more just to make sure I wasn't missing something - because so many people can't be wrong (and because some anime start being better after the story unfolds a bit). Nope, it was a chore watching it (maybe it would be better with less fillers, don't know), so I dropped it. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad anime at all, it has some great moments/features, but it's not what I'm looking for these days. I might have enjoyed it more when I was 15, and before I watched other anime. After some time of watching anime, anime like these get boring, especially when you grow up. It might sound condescending, but it's the truth. (boring =/= bad) I've watched my fair share of DBZ and even some Naruto when I was younger (I'm not saying they're the same as OP, but they're not that different either). I love DBZ, but if you asked me to rewatch it, I'd rather bash my head against the wall (because of the content, as well as length/fillers - if I enjoy the content, though, length is not a problem). With pretty much any long-ass-thread, discussion tends to veer-off to various topics at one point or another. When you have a lot of people participating, it's bound to go to many different topics (especially since some of them are now going to college or finished it). Nothing about that proves anything. I'll take a look at Kingdom, but knowing your tastes, I'm not sure it's going to fit my bill. Edit: The anime could be good, but I'm unsure if I'd enjoy the theme/plot, seems it'll be a hit-or-miss. Will check a few episodes when I get time. Thanks. Then I said, fuck them, it's a cult and revolutionary anime, and it's quite good, especially for its time. I know it's a teen-angst thing, but I don't care. It's very multi-faceted, even though it can be kinda black-and-white regarding some things. I like the story and the atmosphere, even though I've kinda outgrown some of the teenage things in there (some of them still resonate though). For some of us NGE makes more sense than others, we're all different, everyone has his/her cup of tea. So no need to get upset and personal over an OP comment, even if I could have worded it a bit differently to not upset some poor souls. Anyways, if you would like to continue this discussion, we can do it over PMs, since this isn't an anime discussion thread. But I'd prefer if we didn't.

Kind of like soft porn. Mangas of that type also tend to have the motivation. I assume it is more popular in Japan due to the censorship laws forced on them after WW2. See stuff like the following on how common it is it is: https://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?tagid=2856&show=tag&orderby.ucnt=0.2&orderby.name=1.1&noalias=1&cat.minweight=6 The more popular series also has a secondary redeeming feature that makes them good in general. A similar example to this might be Queen`s Blade where they fight using weapons but all fights end up nude and often with compromising holds.
