Not every sponsorship announcement has to be written for the NY Times. I think it was supposed to be fun and using some anime memes to make it more cute. You are right, it is a bit unclear: it's a sponsorship. As for what it's offering to the users, the details are in there

It was a joke referencing what is seemingly an obvious anime meme, but the confusion is understandable--hard to determine this when you are on the inside. Crunchyroll sponsors TL would be more clear, but less topical and fun. There is a trade off, you're right. Hopefully it's more clear now though!

Yeah, I think this post could definitely use some "sirius bizness" paragraph spoilered below all the cutesy stuff or something, that explains clearly what the news is about. Besides being amused by the graphics and memes, I was definitely in the camp that had no idea what any of it actually meant ^^.

Don't watch One Piece, unless you're maybe 15 years old, then you might enjoy it (especially if you haven't watched better anime first). It's a waste of time anime. For anime, I suggest (watch all subbed): - Berserk (dark fantasy, more mature, cult anime. watch the old version, not the new "movies") - Neon Genesis Evangelion (cult, watch the old series. there are 2 endings, don't remember which one is better to watch first) - Golden Boy (comedy, only 6 episodes, watch the dubbed version, this is one of the rare dubs that's actually better than the japanese voices) - Akira (anime movie, dystopian future, cult anime) - Hellsing (old one, the new is also not bad) - Cowboy Bebop (more mature than most anime) etc. Nice to see this partnership!

If you don't watch anime, you're working with some very dubious secondhand information. Crunchy does a pretty damn good job with their subs considering the time frame they have to work with (they typically only have a few hours between when they get the RAWs and when their simulcasts go up). Apart from a few minor translation or localization issues, their subs are pretty high quality. Also, they just made a deal with their primary business rival Funimation through which they get the licenses to most of Funi's subtitled catalog, and to most subtitled simulcasts moving forward, so they've just gained almost a monopoly on subtitled anime. Seems like a pretty great idea to partner with them professionally at the moment.

Anime stopped being good when they caught up to the manga and stopped with filler content. After that you have like 5 minutes (max) of worthwhile content in a 24 minute episode. Some other recommendations outside what people normally think of as the standard defining work in an anime genre. Sci Fi Time of Eve is about androids and their rights. Space Brothers is about people wanting to reach space. Fantasy Natsume Yujin-cho a high school student inherits a book with the true names of Japanese "demons" and the meetings this generates. Slice of Life Barakamon is about a calligrapher that wants to get his life back on track in the countryside. Sports Ping Pong the Animation is about a genius at table tennis that quit and his journey back to the sport. Very different animation than most people normally think of as the standard anime, especially in action scenes. Reminds of the later One Punch Man animation in some ways.

Some evidence: 「Crunchyrollは以上二万五千の無料のエピソードを持っています。」 sounds like the English words were directly translated into Japanese and jammed together. Perhaps 「Crunchyrollでは2万5千以上のエピソードを無料で見ることが出来ます。」 However, the first few words アニメやビデオゲームは (which is better worded as アニメとテレビゲームは) seem to suggest that a non-fluent speaker did the writing rather than google, which probably wouldn't have used ビデオゲーム). However, a non-fluent speaker probably wouldn't make the mistakes in evidence A. edit: Looking at the "turn on subtitles" version, it's definitely not a machine translation (of that text at least). The translation and the "original" don't match at all. Sources: self (non-fluent speaker, used google translate for many years) On topic: If you actually want to support the studios buy (pre-order) the BDs. Usually costs about USD 400-500 + shipping + commission for 6-7 volumes (12-13 episodes). For many shows the BD sales represent a very large portion of the total revenue to the studio. For all of you who complain about no second season for XXX show or YYY show, this is why.

Let's get some things straight first. Are you serious? You're saying it isn't aimed at 15 year olds? Get a grip. It might have evolved some, but it certainly did start as a young teenager anime, and probably still is. I bet if you checked its demographics, it'd be mostly people under 20. I'm not saying some adults can't enjoy it, though. I can understand the bias since it's your first anime, but if you haven't seen any anime that comes even close, you need either a reality check, or to watch more and deverse anime. On September 16 2016 07:30 Incognoto wrote: what a limited point of view you have.. one piece takes the cake by far and large in terms of plot, character development, etc. there aren't wrong or right opinions but my opinion is that your taste is terrible if you're steering people away from one piece. of course, the popularity of one piece speaks for itself You're basing the quality of anime on popularity? Please.
THAT'S why it's popular, not because of its quality (even though the quality isn't bad). I've watched it because of all the hype; then when I wanted to drop it, I watched some more just to make sure I wasn't missing something - because so many people can't be wrong (and because some anime start being better after the story unfolds a bit). Nope, it was a chore watching it (maybe it would be better with less fillers, don't know), so I dropped it. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad anime at all, it has some great moments/features, but it's not what I'm looking for these days. I might have enjoyed it more when I was 15, and before I watched other anime. After some time of watching anime, anime like these get boring, especially when you grow up. It might sound condescending, but it's the truth. (boring =/= bad) I've watched my fair share of DBZ and even some Naruto when I was younger (I'm not saying they're the same as OP, but they're not that different either). I love DBZ, but if you asked me to rewatch it, I'd rather bash my head against the wall (because of the content, as well as length/fillers - if I enjoy the content, though, length is not a problem). On September 16 2016 07:30 Incognoto wrote: like seriously, the one piece discussion thread on tl.net has seen it all. everything from morals and ethics to physics have been discussed to death in the thread. you're telling me it's for 15 year olds? what a meme only kingdom comes close, which is also by the way absolute insanity. by far my second favorite manga The content of the OP thread matters, why? With pretty much any long-ass-thread, discussion tends to veer-off to various topics at one point or another. When you have a lot of people participating, it's bound to go to many different topics (especially since some of them are now going to college or finished it). Nothing about that proves anything. I'll take a look at Kingdom, but knowing your tastes, I'm not sure it's going to fit my bill. Edit: The anime could be good, but I'm unsure if I'd enjoy the theme/plot, seems it'll be a hit-or-miss. Will check a few episodes when I get time. Thanks. Then I said, fuck them, it's a cult and revolutionary anime, and it's quite good, especially for its time. I know it's a teen-angst thing, but I don't care. It's very multi-faceted, even though it can be kinda black-and-white regarding some things. I like the story and the atmosphere, even though I've kinda outgrown some of the teenage things in there (some of them still resonate though). For some of us NGE makes more sense than others, we're all different, everyone has his/her cup of tea. So no need to get upset and personal over an OP comment, even if I could have worded it a bit differently to not upset some poor souls. Anyways, if you would like to continue this discussion, we can do it over PMs, since this isn't an anime discussion thread. But I'd prefer if we didn't.

Kind of like soft porn. Mangas of that type also tend to have the motivation. I assume it is more popular in Japan due to the censorship laws forced on them after WW2. See stuff like the following on how common it is it is: https://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?tagid=2856&show=tag&orderby.ucnt=0.2&orderby.name=1.1&noalias=1&cat.minweight=6 The more popular series also has a secondary redeeming feature that makes them good in general. A similar example to this might be Queen`s Blade where they fight using weapons but all fights end up nude and often with compromising holds.
